GOALS!!!!!!!!!!! - IanEsplen
The problem is, this roster is already capable of scoring a ton of goals. It was the lack of set lines/set pairings (no offensive chemistry), a reactionary defensive mindset (line matching where the emphasis was on preventing goals rather than scoring them)... AV was THE problem when it comes to our lack of post season scoring.
It was the same every season except the year where we were so deep that it was almost impossible for him to (frank) it up... Then Boston came along, and he panicked... Started making his knee-jerk coaching decisions up 2-0 in the SCF, and he pissed away our chance at a cup. |

Completely agreed. It would have been much better for the future of the team if the staff was fired after the finals that year. |

GOALS!!!!!!!!!!! - IanEsplen
Yes goals is always the ultimate problem for any team that doesnt win the cup because they win you the game. You have to ask yourself why this team can score in the regular season and not the playoffs. They are a small/soft team. They need to soften up the opposition. The sedins, burrows, kesler are the only 4 legit top 6 forwards and they are not big, so they are not given a chance for success when the whistle gets put away. Its not that there bad players.
I agree that they need a top 6 forward that can flat out be offensive a skinner, yakupov, kane type guy. Someone who can by themselves score a goal.
They also need a legit top 6 power forward that hits and will wear down down the other teams defense, like a brown, backes or simmonds. NOT kassian.
We also need a real 3rd line center. Someone who can shutdown the other teams top players so Kessler is not forced to all the time. Also someone with size to wear down the top forwards. Roy was the exact opposite of what we needed.
Also need a 4th line center that is great at face offs. See manny during the cup run. I want Gordon out of phoenix.
They also need to alter there defense as they basically all are good players once again but to similar. We are lacking a big shut down style type guy like an orpik, cowan.
The problem is unless we keep loungo and deal schneider, Edler(as his no trade doesnt kick in til July), picks and propects we have no way to remedy any of these problems.
Would love to move up and draft Domi. I think could be that offensive threat we seem to lack and could probably play next year with the team. But whats the cost?

There's just no way Luongo is getting traded with the new CBA "cap recapture" rule. Even if the Canucks could find a rival GM who doesn't understand the rules, the Canucks will still be penalized when Luongo retires, under the new CBA "cap recapture” clause.
http://sports.yahoo.com/b...ruin-under-152721636.html
Because of that, and the CBA allowing each team two buyouts between now and the end of the 2013-14 season, the Canucks will have to buyout Luongo (unless some team is dumb enough to trade for him for one year and then buy him out). All of the 40 cap exploiting deals are likely to be bought out by the summer of 2014 - the penalties are too severe otherwise. |

They should have grandfathered those deals. Due to this if I am Gillis I beg Lou to stay. Might be possible with Veenyo gone. |

Do the cap recapture provisions die with the buy-out? Is he free and unecumbered if someone picks up the contract after the buy-out? |

The contract no longer exists after the buy out. He'd be free to sign anywhere (except here). |

Well at this point they are the ONLY two options. The new CBA makes it impossible to trade him. That's a tough check for an owner to write. Ouch. |

I wonder if the Canucks would be on the hook for this cap recapture (if it can even be enforced) if Luongo were to be claimed off waivers? |

Not sure why you even take that chance when you can buy him out and write off the $1.5 million expense annually for the next 18 years. |

And no cap hit, it's a no brainer, buy him out and trade the others (Ballard and Booth) |

I do agree that someone dumb enough to buy the Coyotes might be dumb enough to trade for Luongo. - Canada Cup
The NHL penalizes back diving contracts so the NHL team taking on a back diving contract sounds about right for them dumb asses |

No one is going to trade for Richards and that albatross of a contract. He'll definitely be bought out if he's leaving NYC. Will he sign with Nashville though? I doubt it. - ProudestMonkey

Saw this trade suggested elsewhere and I like it:
Edler (and maybe a prospect) to Carolina for 5th overall; Carolina has said they're willing to trade their 5th overall for a solid young Dman.
Then trade Luongo and that 5th overall to Florida for 2nd overall.
Effectively trading Edler and Luongo for 2nd overall (MacKinnon) and clears up a ton of salary space. Although if Colarado takes MacKinnon at #1 then that doesn't work out. Maybe Drouin is still worth it?
And another thought...
How about Maholtra as assistant coach to be groomed for head coach? - hapalino
If Col takes MacKinnon then 2 nd would take Jones. If Canucks did get the 5 th overall that would be great.
If Fla did did take MacKinnon then they are likely to trade one of their other center prospects. |

I think keep Lu also cus were stuck with him. Now that AV is gone i could be possible that he comes back. Then use schneider to get a power winger, scoring winger or high pick. - allen_gamble
Gillis said on the radio the other day he didn't fire Rollie because he and Corey work well together. He also said when asked if Lu would be back he said" I doubt it"
Does not sound like he is interested in keeping Lu |

Carolina doesn't do that unless you are giving a good prospect .... This is a great draft so they will look for a better deal then van can offer
Florida has their future goalie so they aren't trading for one under contract for that many years
Manny wasn't too happy the way things ended and is going to try to play this year ... I don't know how great his relationship with gillis is anymore |
