do you think Laviolette finally 'realized' that this after he was forced to play a more simplified system? - sarmen25
I hope so. Because there's a good chance that they'll have issues adding a bona fide top four guy with good mobility and puck skills. |

How much would you go to resign Read? Just curious, so much chatter about him being a chip due to his pending UFA status, was curious to how much people value him contract wise. - Pat MaGroin
They have to re-sign Coots, Giroux, Schenn, and 2 guys to replace Kimmo and Mez before even considering Read. Kinda leaves whatever is leftover for him (and they still haven't addressed the goaltending situation if Bryz is a buyout). Maybe $2.8 AAV for 3-4 years? It will be interesting.... as it always is with snider and holmgren. |

I understand Schenn is still "supposed" to have the higher ceiling. (must keep in mind he is only 21). But I like Read's game better....so far. Yes I know he is older, but Read is a more consistent player in all three zones.......
The team has some decisions to make. But If I am GM, I start with using both my amnesties and working on keeping all the kids. - MBFlyerfan

As solid as Edler is, I don't think he'll be one of the greatest Dmen in team history . And Vancouver doesn't want Read apparently, because he's small and soft. So they instantly will want B Schenn because he's what? A big ol' power forward? Hartnell + makes sense to me, as well, and he does fit the bill for alot of what VAN needs. - JAKEw1234
When Howe was traded to the Flyers, he was coming off a serious injury and a down year. Even if Edler stays at his present level of play, he'll be a very good, all star level, top pair defenseman that can play in all situations.
I didn't say Read was soft. I said that Vancouver's biggest need at forward is size and grit on the wings. Read has some grit to his game, but he's not like Simmonds or Hartnell or even Schenn in that regard. He's more a speed/skill guy than a banger.
Hartnell makes sense to me, as well. But he does have a NTC and is a 30 year old guy coming off an injury plagued year where his production suffered. Obviously, we'd all prefer to move a 30 year old than a 24 year old Simmonds or a 22 year old Schenn.
Trading Edler for Read would be like the Flyers trading Schenn for Karl Alzner. Alzner is a good defensive defenseman, but he's not a need for the Flyers, much like Read isn't a need for the Canucks. |

I suppose you're right, but seeing as Edler is coming off of an injury-induced down year as well, I'd say it puts Hartnell and Edler on pretty equal footing. |

Not saying it doesn't...but Vancouver would probably prefer a younger player, and getting a guy that fills as many needs as Edler is worth trading a younger player, because it increases the chances of winning a Stanley Cup and makes the team deeper.
I'm not saying they shouldn't try to move Hartnell or Read, but it's more likely the Canucks would want Simmonds or Schenn-and I would move any one of the four to land a player of Edler's caliber.
That's if Edler's even available. Because I wouldn't move him if I was the Canucks. |

Probably not, but could be a top pair guy. Good hockey sense, great shot, solid all around defenseman, who is likely to get better. I agree with Bill sentiment that he's the second best defenseman, after Jones.
He's one of several guys I'd be happy to take at 11. |

and this is why i was upset that the flyers started winning at the end of the season...
if we had stayed at 8, we would've had the so many choices to choose from.... |

They still have a ton of choices. In fact, if I could get a second first rounder, from a team like Columbus, I'd be willing to move back. They're going to get a very good prospect at 11, really he'll probably be similar to one they could get at 8.

i understand that...in fact, i dont think anyone can really predict 6-20....
im just a fan of controlling your own destiny...so if a guy like Monahan was available at 8th, i would love to pick him...but now you're gonna hope that he stays at 11
that is, if monahan is teh guy you want....
and hey, who knows...maybe you're right about CBJ...seems like they're finally getting closer and closer...maybe we can trade a roster player for one of their picks... |

I just read in Expressen (a Swedish newspaper) that Flyers and Edmonton among other clubs have shown some interest in the Austrian goalie Bernhard Starkbaum (as well as some teams from KHL), who played in Modo (Forsbergs club in Sweden) this season. Probably just Homer kicking some tires. It sounded like Starkbaum's agent was the source.

I'd be willing to trade 11 & 41 to get the Jackets pick and either NY's or LA's 1st rounder. |

Had good numbers for MODO, and at age 27, he's probably not willing to jump to tend goal in Adirondack or Oklahoma City |

Bill, tell me if you think this is feasible. I have a scenario that I see working huge for the Flyers. Trade B. Coburn, M. Read, N. Cousins and 41st. pick to Phoenix for K. Yandle and the 12th pick. We are giving them 2 starters, a 100 point scoring prospect and the pick. With that pick and they're 2nd they can get back into the 1st round.
We get the d man we have wanted then we draft R. Poluck if there and the next best player at 12. If the Flyers would amnesty both Briere and Bryz we then have a lot of money. They would have to get a N. Horton plus another goalie but I think our defensive woes would be over i f available, I would draft Pulock and Ristolein or N. Zadrof. Your thoughts? |

I don't see Cousins as a 100 point guy.

In the OHL he was. In the pros, probably not so much. |

I'm not Bill, but I have applied for car loans and mortgages with his name.
I don't see Phoenix biting on that deal.
Coburn is coming off an injury and a very up and down season. His value is at it's low point right now. Read fills a need for them, but he'll be a UFA next summer and likely will get a significant raise. Cousins had a great year in the OHL, but he's not likely to put up the kind of numbers he did with the Soo in the NHL.
The other issue is, the rumored asking price for Yandle was for that of an elite or near elite defenseman. If that holds, they won't get him for that package, let alone the 12th pick |

Who is the 100 pt scoring prospect? I think you would have to include one of B Schenn or Couturier to get Yandle at this point. |
