He's a winger. - jmatchett383
mike green is a defenseman for the Caps.
edit: considering i have the word "sarcasm" in my name, you'd think i'd be more prepared for it when i see it. |

Look at most GM's resume's. They all have trades that didn't work out on it. - MJL
Understood. Lob sided trades like the ones I illustrated set franchises back years. You can't trade talented youth like that for decaying veteran rentals. |

Yeah, that's what everyone who doesn't watch him say. he really isn't that bad in his own zone. Not the best, but certainly not the worst. You want to know who is? John Carlson. - Blackstrom2
John Carlson is an American hero. Also, during Green's crazy season where he scored his 30 goals on whatever playing opposite wing to Ovechkin, I watched a ton of those games. Time and time and time again, he'd get caught crazy deep and have odd-man rushes the other way.
He's not bad when he plays as a normal offensive defenseman, but at times, when he makes these lone-ranger charges, he looks like Jack Johnson out there. |

but if you are decent at drafting forwards, you have forwards on ELCs, and extra money to spend on defense... - aightwebang17
Damn you and your good points...
And no matter how you break it down, in a salary capped world, no team can retain a squad full of high-end talent. |

Yeah, he's toned down a bit, but I think he had like 16 of those goals on the PP that year. He doesn't rove nearly as much.
Carlson is a sloppy mess in his own zone. |

IMO, the Flyers tend to be too active, often out of desperation/reaction, and they make a lot of mistakes as a result. |

I would agree with this for the most part while pointing out that even the defenseman playing somewhere else drafted by the Flyers haven't really stood out. - MBFlyerfan

Your point is valid, but Detroit hasn't misfired on a trade in a long time.

Mystifying. - bradleyc4
Leino...
But there's a lot of "Who cares" trades lumped in there and no great trades either. They haven't really had to make a lot of trades because they draft so well. |

Some say parity has come to hockey. I say parody has come to hockey. Those days when the only limit to what the flyers could spend was determined by the contents of Mr Snider's wallet... I want them back. Please? |

Kyle Quincey for a 1st-rounder was a doozy... shades of Eminger for a 1st... but yeah, they tend to do most of their work in the draft and via UFA. |

Bob Clarke didn't often trade youth for veterans like that. Look back at his track record.
The Williams trade was made because he rightfully thought that the Flyers were primed for a run and had a cup shot but were missing Desjardins.
You can point to Ken Hitchcock as the driving force behind the Siedenberg and Sharp trades although the return is all on Clarke. |

This coming season is going to be goofy with the cap going down a bit, but after that it should start crawling back up again.
The thing I don't quite understand in the fluctuating cap world is how teams are supposed to manage that when a player's cap hit (with the vast majority of them being under an active contract) doesn't fluctuate as well. |

I friggin' hate the cap!!! What good does it do the fans of the teams who flock to the games and spend their hard earned money? Where's our reward for the hard work we put in everyday to earn money to support our teams? So Florida can jam up on free agents and Nashville can slather Shea Weber in the money Philly paid out in revenue sharing?
Totally bogus. |

The cap is going to soar after next season. This artificial cap is all BS. The cap will be upwards of 75 mil in 2014. |

As Bill said, a lot of the defensive prospects that do pan out are usually on to their second (or third) club by the time they get their games together.
Solving the problem via drafting should be the primary focus, of course, but being in position to be that second (or third) club that reaps the benefits of a solid draft selection is probably just as viable, if not more efficient, way to assemble an affordable d-corps.
The worst possible way is to overpay for guys in their primes, or try to deal for guys like Pietrangelo/OEL who've already hit their stride... it's either going to cost you a boatload of assets, or a ton of $ against the cap, or both.
That's why some of us love the idea of reclamation projects like Erik Johnson, Jamie McBain, etc. - Tomahawk
Colorado gave up Shattenkirk and Chris Stewart for Erik Johnson. What would you expect Colorado to want, to trade a reclamation project to the Flyers? |

There's a few, not many:
LA - Voynov
NYI - Hamonic
NYR - McDonagh
Tor - Gardiner
Definitely the exception rather than the norm. - jmatchett383
And Gardiner spent a lot of time as a scratch this past Season. |

I personally would not favor the trade you propose. - MJL

It's a catch 22. You try and help out the poor teams by limiting how much they have to spend. But the flipside is you restrict the top teams from putting the best product on the ice, that they can. Due to spending restrictions. And cut your own throat. |

I don't think the original trade has much bearing... Sakic and Roy are probably less concerned with saving face for Sherman than Sherman would be if his was still the only hand on the lever.
EJ could probably be had for a Luke Schenn type of deal -- youngster for youngster.
Not cheap, but a hell of a lot cheaper than chasing after Edler, Shattenkirk or Pietrangelo. |
