the problem is the market is even less this year due to the lower cap, and teams already looking with distaste at having to buy out some of their players. I don't see Luongo moving, and I see 29 other gm's watching Gillis trying to hide a smile because the second he buys out Luongo they'll be all over themselves trying to sign him. Shorter term deal of course.
Canucks already have to deal with Booth and Ballard, neither of which is worth anything to anyone else or they would have already been moved. Think Gillis wouldn't have tried with his team at the cap at the deadline? If he could have moved Ballard for cap space or gotten rid of Booth he would have. Now you have an issue. Three players you can't move and you can only buy out two of them. - Isles_since_6
ballard will be bought out if he can't be traded. booth will not be bought out. the simple reason is that he will either play well and be worth keeping or he'll get hurt and go on IR. either way the canucks win. there's no in between for DB. plus, god is on his side so what could possibly go wrong?
phoenix should have to trade for lu, richards, byrz, kovalchuck, hossa, franson, etc. and anyone else on a ridiculously long contract. actually, with that lineup, they'd win.

lol that's cute. I think some of the others here who have seen me post would tell you that's not hostility, there's no mistaking it when I get there
Just like Howson with Nash, at some point, no matter what you demand, there comes a time when you realize (just like on craigslist!) there is no one buying what you're selling at the price you're asking. Then you take a lot less. Then you get fired.
okay maybe not fired from craigslist, I'll give you that one |

I want to gauge how you, and islander nation, feel about potentially acquiring Roberto Luongo.
This is what I've managed to put together:
1). You'd definitely sign Roberto, at the right price, if he was bought out.
2). You would trade DiPietro for Luongo, so the Canucks could buy him out.
3). You think Roberto would improve your team.
-
1). You don't want to trade Nino, a player that wants out for Luongo.
2). You don't want to trade any potential NHL'r for a current all-star NHL'r even if it does improve your team; and that is because the contract is to crazy.
-
1). You believe you have two sure fire NHL goalies, and all of Long Island should wait for them to develop. Because when they are good, they'll be better than Lou is right now.
----
Everyone has a different POV, so you might not agree with me in this; but here it goes:
Luongo WILL improve your team, but its not worth getting rid of an equally large contract because you'd have to improve the other team too. If Luongo does become available though, you would sign him to a fair contract; say 3 years 3 million (I think that's a steal).
At this point would you buy out DiPietro, or keep him on to keep your cap afloat? Wouldn't it have been easier to trade a disgruntled player, AND have the Canucks literally pay for your mistake?
Lets be honest here. Which contract is worse? DP or LU
If you choose DP, you should consider trading him; even if it does mean giving up some futures. If you choose LU, there is probably no convincing you to take LU.
Maybe DP would be a better option?

this is a really well written post so I'll go through it with my opinions:
I want to gauge how you, and islander nation, feel about potentially acquiring Roberto Luongo.
This is what I've managed to put together:
1). You'd definitely sign Roberto, at the right price, if he was bought out. -correct
2). You would trade DiPietro for Luongo, so the Canucks could buy him out. - correct
3). You think Roberto would improve your team. - correct
-
1). You don't want to trade Nino, a player that wants out for Luongo. - incorrect slightly, Nino's been quoted since then saying he wants to come to camp in the best possible shape to try and earn a spot on the Islanders, but yes, we don't want to trade him
2). You don't want to trade any potential NHL'r for a current all-star NHL'r even if it does improve your team; and that is because the contract is to crazy. - slightly incorrect, we don't want to move a good prospect for that contract. You could have someone not thought of as a blue chipper, ness I'd be fine with, or dehaan possibly
-
1). You believe you have two sure fire NHL goalies, and all of Long Island should wait for them to develop. Because when they are good, they'll be better than Lou is right now. - incorrect. we have no idea what we have because neither has had any extended playing time in the NHL. we don't want to block them and give up something good at the same time, a stop gap or shorter contract makes sense
----
Everyone has a different POV - correct , so you might not agree with me in this; but here it goes:
Luongo WILL improve your team, but its not worth getting rid of an equally large contract because you'd have to improve the other team too .- incorrect, we don't care about the other team, only that it means losing an asset we value for a contract that is unreasonable If Luongo does become available though, you would sign him to a fair contract; say 3 years 3 million (I think that's a steal). - correct
At this point would you buy out DiPietro, or keep him on to keep your cap afloat? Wouldn't it have been easier to trade a disgruntled player, AND have the Canucks literally pay for your mistake? - absolutely, but why give up an asset when we could keep DP in the minors and use his cap dollars to reach the floor and play more kids?
Lets be honest here. Which contract is worse? DP or LU - Luongo's, 18 year buyout at higher cap penalty if he retires early compared to the flat 1.5 per year for 16 years for dp
If you choose DP, you should consider trading him; even if it does mean giving up some futures. If you choose LU, there is probably no convincing you to take LU. - correct, not if it means giving up an asset
Maybe DP would be a better option? - he's not an option, he's a cap figure and a minor league backup at best now. He's done.

1) correct...Nino doesnt want out... first off
2) a current all star with a Horrendous contract Vanc HAS to get rid of.
1)No I personally think the Isles would take Lou, but DP would have to go back in the deal & the Isles wouldn't give up any more then later picks or middle of the road prospects. I ONLY saiy they would take him because Wang wants to reach the floor... DP for Lou is a wash in that respect & atleast Lou can play.
We have 2 "potential" NHL goalies in the system, but either or both could just as well become Eric Fishaud.
Only player we have right now that you could even slightly say is disgruntled is DP & thats because he's in the AHL.
Without question DP is the worse contract... he cant play... the fear of paying for diminishing talent is not even close to paid to not play.

If the Isles are gonna have all this cap room.... what are they(more importantly you fans on here) worried about taking Lu's contract. You're gonna pay him 5-6 million per year while he is probably the starter or 1A 1B goalie then his actual dollars paid drops to 3 then 1. His cap hit is only 5.3. The isles seem to never spend to the cap because realistically they can't afford it and attract enough high profiles free agents. So please stop saying this contract is so terrible. You are getting a very good starting goalie, you can actually use those cap hit dollars and now having Lu could've put you past the Pens this year and possibly down the road. I wouldn't sell the farm but Dipietro, Nino for Lu and a 3rd round pick. I'd make it happen from both sides. Just remember if Lu is a free agent, he ain't going to Long Island. |

Schneider is REALLY good. I can't explain why he's better than Lu, but he's been the best Canucks graduate since the Sedin's. I'll add this as well: I think Luongo wants to move on from Vancouver, and his wish should be granted. Guys a class act. |

Well then DP going back would be the only way this could happen, so if that creates a bidding war... go with one of those other teams then.

Also, Wang's son can go back to making the sequel for UP.
