As you know, Illini, I have been right there with you. But—and while the Wings are not the Kings—I was pleasantly surprised at how this team responded physically in that series.
detroit clearly thought they could intimidate the Hawks and they didn't. By the end of the series, aside from Quincey mugging Saad (who needs to seriously man up by the way), it was the Hawks punishing the Wings. Less hit numbers but much bigger hits: Bickell, Hjalmarsson, Shaw, Seabrook, Rozsival—even Kruger and Bolland. The Hawks will not match the Kings as hitters, nor should they try. But if anyone thinks the Hawks aren't capable of inflicting damage physically, they are mistaken. - John Jaeckel
I agree. There are some additions this year to go along with some growth on the existing roster. Q just needs to play them in the right areas. Seems to be doing that.
This team isn't as physical as the Kings. But it isn't he team of the past 2 years either. |

Watching the special on NHL channel interviewing Kings how special winning the Cup was and how emotional they all were. They still want this bad. I immediately thought about Keith's comments the year after. Big contrast. Hopefully that fire is back. The Kings certainly still want this very badly. - ilinkhawk
Yep, and they are a confident team. A lot like the Hawks (the real hawks) in terms of knowing they're never out of a game. That said, there are few teams more confident like that than Detroit.

Although which Hawk team is going to show up is always a valid concern with this team, I can't see them showing up and throwing their sticks out there, at least not today. Detroit brought out the best in this club over the last three games and the memory of the near embarrassing elimination can't be forgotten at this point.
I think the big question will be how the Hawks will adjust to the greater size and physicality of the Kings.
That said, anyone thinking the Kings have some magic formula by which their defensemen will neutralize the Hawks' speed—that hasn't already been tried—needs to watch more than just the Kings' series.
And let me say this, what the Kings will do will work. And it will work a lot. The question is, will it work enough.
Because on the other end, while the Kings fan above and some others actually think that the Hawks don't play defense like the Sharks and Blues do, they're wrong. The Hawks typically play better defense. Well, the Hawks play a different style of defense, predicated on speed, possession and takeaways, but they are marginally more effective. The numbers don't lie. - John Jaeckel
Anyone expecting a great 60 minutes of "playing their game" from EITHER team is going to be disappointed - as should be true of any final four match-up.
Each team can - and will - continuously spoil the other's plans and attacks, especially as the series goes on: Hawk speed and skill will subvert LA's physicality for much of the game, but LA's size and hitting will stop the Hawks from quickly getting out of the d-zone and setting up the offense.
Hawks will have to dump and chase a lot - not their game - and LA will e trying to hit ghosts.
Adjustments - the name of the game here (and in Pittsburgh-Boston) - whoever makes the best on-ice transition to a America they don't like to play will marginally come out on top.
I look for either LA in 6 (they will win one in Chicago - can the Hawks won one in LA?) or Chicago in 7 (Chicago wont lose game 7 at home) - don't know which. |

It's kind of funny....the Hawks are the only ones who think their defense is far superior! Let me give you some advice. Throw out the regular season. It matters NOT!St Louis was superior to the Hawks and we beat them. As Darryl Sutter said and I quote: On rooting for Detroit to beat Chicago, considering the Kings have won 14 in a row at home:
“Regular season doesn’t mean screw-all to me, quite honest.” - arh777
When was this, last year!!!! Elliot sucked for most of the season and got hot the last month. His and Halak's save % were terrible... I think that 14 game winning streak in LA comes to an end in this series!!!! I'll give you some advice, check your stat's funny guy! |

Saad and Stalberg, can u guys use ur speed to make a difference this round, or will you get bumped off the puck every time you touch it like frail twigs? That could make the difference in this series. - SimpleJack
More than this....it would be nice if the scored.

Yeah, scratching my head where the 50th negociating list slot came from...
Plays the Point on the PP.
Plays with a one of the strongest junior team in the junior hockey, and has slide from the second and third lines since two-thirds of their London's first line is going to be drafted in the top 15 choices.
He is smaller, skilled, and smart.
Not shaw, not kane, just a kid who will have to work for a chance to play. |

Dude, go look at the numbers. Backchecking? Seriously? You are way off base.
Really, we shall see...
Collapsing defense that will keep the Hawks on the perimeter? You act as though no one has ever tried that. It IS the way to defense the Hawks. Nothing new however. Will it work? Dunno. Sometimes it does and sometimes it doesn't.
Every team can try it but does every team have the personnel to make it work.
Team defense? Which TEAM has the Selke finalist, and Hossa, and Sharp, and Kruger, and Bolland, and Frolik? Which TEAM is 41 for 42 on the PK in the playoffs?
Why don't we look at who you guys played vs who we played....The Wild...please! Detroit?? you should have taken care of them in 5...come on!
Let me help you out. Go to nhl.com. Look at the TEAM stats (Playoff and regular season, Chicago, St. Louis, san Jose AND L.A.). Then come back and let's talk about TEAM defense. We can't have a discussion if you choose to ignore FACTS. - John Jaeckel

Team defense isn't just the "defensive positions" It's the 200' players on the O who back check. St lu are a complete team who just lacked finishers. You guys have the finishers however L A collapsing defense will keep you guys on the perimeter IMO. If you want to talk defense lets talk team defense and the system being implemented. Playoffs are a different animal. We shall see who shows up. Not to long now. Good luck! - arh777
Have you actually watched the Blackhawks play this year? They may be the best backchecking team in the league. You know this team has Hossa and Toews, right? You discredit yourself with this kind of stuff. |

I think whether or not Stoll can go (and be effective) will play a big role in this series. He is a faceoff master and has what it takes to bother Toews. Any word on his status? |

I wouldn't be shocked but would be surprised if Stoll plays after only one skate without contact.

Okay guy.
Hawks are second in the playoffs in GAA. The Kings are first.
So even in the animalistic playoffs the Hawks still possess one of the best defenses.

My god are there a lot of grinders. I thought the league wanted to bring more skill and less grinders back over the last few years? I really hope LA doesn't repeat. I don't want to go back to those days |
