If Homers going to get a defender, he needs to look at Kevin Shattenkirk.
Kid is exactly what we need. Offer sheet him. Make it impossible for Blues to match. How much that costs is anyone's guess, but almost every team in the leauge is gonna have a similar rationale. Between Jbo and Pietrangelo alone their gonna end up spending a ton on D. Paying Shattenkirk may not be realistic, though they'll obviously do all they can too keep him. - mochoson
I don't think the Blues would put theirselves in a position to lose Shattenkirk. They are a well run organization. I think they'd buy out JBo before letting Shattenkirk go. |

How can you explain about the talk that Holmgren refused to trade Couturier and B Schenn for Weber? That seems to show that he does have the patience. They had the patience to develop Richards and Carter into top players that resulted in a Cup final. I think it's a mistake ot expect a GM not to try and improve the team and use some assets to add the final peice. Every team that wins does that. - MJL

Finally saw "This is 40" and when the movie started, I completely forgot about Hartnell, JvR, Lappy, Carle, etc being in the movie until the scene they were in finally came up. FWIW: Lappy stole that scene. |

I was talking about Snider being impatient, not Homer. Homer's got the definite mark of a scout/development exec... he probably yearns to build a team in his image from the ground up and keep it together forever. Snider's the complete opposite. |

I'm concerned about his two-way game the most... offensively, I'm sure he'll do just fine, he's got all the tools there... defensively, he's looks a lot more like Mezsaros than Timonen, prone to brain-cramps, bad positioning, jumping out of position, bad pinches, turnovers, etc.
Maybe he'll develop into a complete defender at some point... or maybe he won't. I'm not trading both Schenns, or Couturier and this year's 1st to find out, though. - Tomahawk
Edler's two way game is solid in my opinion. He's very good offensively. And he's solid defensively, and can play in all situations. He's not a true shutdown defenseman. But he is a complete all around player. |

I think it's clear that Holmgren tried to work out a trade for Weber. And only went to the OS as a last resort. |

The Flyers and Preds talked trade until the offer sheet was ultimately matched.
The speculation, per Darren Dreger, is that the Preds wanted Couturier, B. Schenn and "something else". Flyers said no, Preds matched. |

Scouting and Dir of Pro personnel were Homer's roles before the Flyers made him assistant GM, so he probably feels an affinity towards those functions that his predecessors probably didn't possess. |

I think it might have been the other way around. I think he had the offer sheet in mind from the start but tried to see if Nashville would bite at a low ball offer. Wasn't the rumored offer something like Read, Meszaros and a 1st? |

That makes more sense assuming the something else was few 1sts or something. I can't imagine Holmgren would've not traded Schenn and Couts for Weber straight up. |

Yeah, he definitely loves his kids, finding them, grooming them... still remember him choking up when he was forced to part w/ Richie (and maybe Carter)... I'm sure a part of him dies inside every time one of his top prospects is forced to exit stage left. |

Is he worth Hartnell? It's a trade that could help both sides. Not saying we could or should, just intrigued by everyone's opinion. |

That's why I put "crazy irrational". Like the guy who wanted the Flyers and Oilers to make a deal involving Bryz and Hemsky among others. Haven't seen him since. |

funny all this trading up talk to get nicushkin (read, couter)....if they tanked 5 games you wouldnt have to trade anyone. - Philly1980
It was imperative to win those games for the confidence of the team for next year. Even though the roster will probably turnover 25%.
The last win in Ottawa moved them from # 8, to # 11 alone. |

Brad Boyes, Brad Boyes
Whatcha gonna do
Brad Boyes, Brad Boyes
When he goes 12 games without scoring for you?
If Boyes is similarly priced(big if), he'd be an option. Antropov has always been a guy that seemed to be of interest to the Flyers. Neither is especially appealing, to me. - Jsaquella

Hartnell for Edler...Hartnell for Edler...Hartnell for Edler...
Man, that's a tough one. Not because Edler's a bad player. It's more that as much as I THINK Tye McGinn can play, man, I just don't know what you do with 1LW/2LW if McGinn simply isn't ready.
What Hartnell brings...it's not that he isn't replaceable. He is replaceable.
But what he brings...it's not always the numbers. He really does make the power play better, even when he doesn't score. The Flyers' PP with Hartnell and Simmonds in the slot has been devastating the past few years. It wins games, at times.
For instance, the St. Louis Blues are probably still playing if they had someone like Scott Hartnell to do what he does on the PP against Los Angeles in the first round.

He's generally played in very favorable minutes... high offensive zone start %, middling competition, spends most of his time w/ the Sedins (both ES and PP), always has had a solid partner to rely on (Salo, Bieksa), and isn't counted on as a primary PK'er. He's prone to being over-zealous (trucking over Mike Smith) and borderline dirty plays (Eric Staal at the WC's).
Is there a Chris Pronger under there somewhere waiting to get out? He hasn't been put in a position to have to do any heavy lifting, so it's impossible to say at this point. So... you can understand why I would balk at possibly having to put together a Pronger-esque kind of trade package to get him. There's too much that's still unknown. |

I would stay away from any guys with any sort of injury history. Edler will come here and blow his back out in training camp. There is already enough injury concerns on the Flyers blueline. Grossmann and Meszaros are enormous question marks.
