Agreed. Can't swing your stick. It's the Conference Finals game 4, if it was the regular season it might be three, round one maybe two but here and now I think it's a game. - mayorofangrytown
If he's suspended, it's gotta be more than one -- he's a repeat offender. Raffi Torres had to miss the entire rest of a playoff round. I'm not saying that's what Keith should get, but I am saying that you can't just give him one, as a repeat offender.

You're correct. I don't know how the NHL can justify it, if there is not a significant suspension.

Remind yourself what he got as a repeat offender (and he was at the time) when he slammed Hossa's (?) head into the glass vs. the Red Wings. |

They can't but Pronger stomped a guy and got one game in the finals. I think he should get nailed but I don't think he will. |

His last suspension was 5 games I believe.

It would be a tough call especially depending on who else will still be available. - ob18
Yeah, if Pulock, Horvat or others we've talked about are there, they'd be my choice before Shinkaruk or Domi |

Yes, in the regular season for an elbow IIRC. But he got a fine in the playoffs vs. Detroit.

I like your premise but not your price tag. - mayorofangrytown
Would you trade a dman like Grossmann plus a prospect for the following unnamed player, who's numbers look very similar to McBain's and was taken around the same part of the draft?
Here's McBain's numbers for reference... Player A's obviously a little more chippy but got to a slower start as a pro:

I think one thing that will help him is that there wasn't an intent to injure.

Really not a good question. Every player is different. And every player develops at a different rate. And because one player raised his game and developed, doesn't mean McBain will . When debating whether to trade Grossmann for a specific player. The only thing that is relevant are the prospective players involved in the trade. |

What do you think, suspension or no suspension?

doesn't matter who the first guy is, I can promise you he's more defensively sound than McBain. |

I'd go a game, without the repeat offender, I'd give him a max fine.
It was nasty looking, but ultimately, it resulted in a flesh wound, and Carter's not totally innocent on the play either. |

You're looking at one year, where the entire team was bad, and in your previous criticisms of McBain, the main stat you used was +/-.
McBain struggled, no doubt. But he's also shown stretches where he could be a very capable puck mover with good wheels. |

Pretty much. Duncan Keith didn't become a standout until he was 25-27 years old, about the same range that McBain is entering to now. Prior to that, he was just a sweet skating, undersized dman who used to get pushed around a lot. |

Does that automatically mean that McBain will follow the same path?
What if someone found the early stats of a talented young defenseman, that didn't develop into a top player, and just continued to underachieve and struggle. Would that be relevant?
Duncan Keith led his team in icetime as a Rookie defenseman. And by his 3rd Season was playing 25 minutes a game. Undersized D men who get pushed around a lot don't normally play 25 minutes a game. |

Couldn't help myself. I'd like them to consider McBain i they can't land a more experienced, top four guy like the ones we've been kicking around since April or even earlier. - Jsaquella
Yeah, I was trying to make the point that 25 is too early to shut the book on a young NHL defender... and while McBain might not come cheaply, he'd be a lot more affordable than the bigger name players being bandied about, and there's always the chance that he goes on to have a better two-way career than EJ, Yandle, etc. For a team looking to add without subtracting too much, these are the kind of moves I would be most interested in. |

I just don't want them to get on some kind of Edler or bust bandwagon. Hell, I'd try to get an Edler, Yandle, et al. first myself. But if that proves too expensive or simply not possible, I'm all for looking at a younger guy who may have been up and down or had struggles.
A guy like McBain doesn't necessarily get in Gustafsson's way, in fact, I'd be bumping Gus up and forcing the new guy to outplay him. |
