Exactly, I wouldn't. But, I also don't think Carolina would let him part for not much lol. - Flyers_V88
You'd be surprised. Many are down on him.
And much like the Flyers, they need a better mix on their blueline. But they need a top-4 shutdown type. |

Kind of in the same boat... Why are we so high on him again? A guy who has never put up any numbers that are worthy of this praise... A guy who is shotty as best defensively... Just curious here... And to the people who are, what are we giving up to get him exactly (hypothetically)? - Flyers_V88
Not many people understood why Homer targeted Matt Carle over more established name players at the time (think Tomas Kaberle, etc), but that worked out pretty well in the end, didn't it? I do recall people pooping all over Luke Schenn before/after that trade last summer... not many people are complaining about it now.
The only time you're going to be able to get an established top-4 dman from another team, without drastically overpaying, is during a period of struggle for the player and/or their team.
McBain is ripe for the plucking. |

I think people look at his size and his point totals and since he struggled this year believe he's available. It's more desperation than anything. I don't think Carolina is as high on him as they were in the past but I don't think they're trading him yet either. |

What would you give up for McBain? And hoepfully you're not comparing McBain to Schenn or Carle. Because it's a bad comparison. McBain is a puck moving offensive defenseman who really doesn't excel at it. I agree with others. don't see what they hype is about. |

I would take Gus over McBain anyday. I've also never really liked Jamie Mcbain and to this day find myself befuddled why some people think so highly of him. - mochoson
I've seen Erik Johnson's name thrown around quit a bit. I feel he still has time and room to grow as a young player. As a former first around pick, I don't think he'll ever been Chris Pronger (As every big first around is compared to) but I do feel he can be more then what he's shown. He has yet to play for a contending team, so I would like to see what he can do with a really good team. |

Carolina has a great blogger who pained a not-so-pretty picture of McBain and his future:
http://www.shutdownline.c...e-zones-jamie-mcbain.html
It's only one person's opinion, but it's one that I trust. - bradleyc4
BSH, a source that I tend to enjoy and trust, also had a series of posts breaking down the JvR/Schenn trade at the time it went down... they argued that it was a risky move because Schenn had been steadily regressing and was probably never going to amount to much more than a bottom-pair guy... not one year later they were praising the heck out of the kid. |

I agree with you fully about the mix on the blueline. I'm just curious about why McBain? That's all. |

While I do see the arguments you're making, I'm going to have to respectfully disagree with your comparison to Carle... Carle was a Baker winner in college. Had put up points before, and was a good defensemen before we got him, in his own right...
I just think that unless Carolina is willing to give him away, there's no point in trying to trade for him. |

He's mobile, moves the puck w/ aplomb, RH, young, experienced?
He's not a complete player yet, he makes mistakes with regularity, but there's incredible upside. |

Erik Johnson is a name who intrigues me... Not Jamie McBain LMFAO.
Why are we even talking about McBain if we can potentially try and get Johnson who is bigger, stronger, and already a better player. Even though they both had rough years... |

Bill, Agree with you on Streit. I think the best thing that the flyers could add on their PP to help Kimmo is a 'Healthy' Meszaros. With a big shot and Past PP success with Ottawa (buried behind the likes of Pronger, Kimmo, Carle and whichever forwards used at point on PP while in Philly) Meszaros brings enough offensive tools to take on at least the 2nd unit without losing Defensively 5 on 5. I feel confident we will have a Healthy Meszaros come camp. As far as being injury prone, I was just watching Justin Williams playing awesome in the Kings/Hawks series and he's had a lot of the same injuires as Mez and worries about being 'Injury Prone'. He's seems pretty durable to me. |

I agree with the premise that the best way for the Flyers to acquire a top defenseman is to catch a guy that took a downturn and hope he flourishes here.
And Homer sure does love those Minnesota (American) kids. |

Schenn didn't play well in Toronto. That's just a fact. He was regressing and rather quickly. Every time he got a shot he got a chance he dropped the ball. He was a fifth defenseman who was scratched for some middling defensemen on the team. Like JVR was having injury troubles, Schenn was struggling quite a bit in 2012.
I wasn't crazy about the trade at the time and thiought despite JVRs injury woes we could have gotten more for him. Still think that. Schenn has certainly turned the corner it appears and I'm glad for that.
I don't think you can find fault in either article. Just goes to show, a player can right himself in the correct situation. |

Carle's rookie season was eye-popping (still his highest scoring season, believe it or not), but he barely showed a pulse the following season before SJ pulled the plug on him and dealt him in a package for Boyle. TB gave him all of 12-games before pulling the plug on him again, to the great benefit of the Flyers.
I don't think Carolina would give him away, but I think they are more open to trading him now with the guys they have in the system coming up, and Faulk supplanting McBain. It would probably cost something like what we gave up for Carle... NHL d-man plus decent prospect. I'd make that kind of trade for him, but I respect if other people wouldn't. |

I don't think you CAN overreact to a guy taking a wild slash at someone.
And I may be, but I don't think one warrants the other. If Carter slashes his hand, is Keith allowed to 2-hand him in the knee? - jmatchett383
If someone tried to break my hand with a stick you better believe I'd be coming up high with mine. |

I'm not sure I see enough up side to make that kind of trade. I might swap an existing 5-7 Defenseman straight up for him. Sort of a swap for different attributes. |

Prior to this past season, he'd been averaging about .40 points/game. He was almost a point/per/game his first stint in the league when they were playing him over 25min/game. And that was all on a middling offensive team like the 'Canes.
History-wise, he was a top-end puck-mover in college and in the AHL.
I don't think the ceiling is as high as a Matt Carle's was coming into the league, but his potential is well above Gus and Ghost. |

Who talks Pierre Maguire off the bridge tomorrow if the Pens lose tonight?? Or do we just let him jump? |
