That's not exactly true
If they are unable to reach an extension with him,
Then when he becomes a RFA they will have to give him a "Qualifying Offer" to retain his rights, otherwise he becomes a UFA
In order to do so, they'd have to "qualify" him at 6.5mil for ONE year
However,
They can avoid all this by signing him to a contract extension...
Something like 5mil per is prob what O'reilly is looking for
Although,
If he wants out, he can refuse to sign an extension & simply tell them to either trade him, otherwise all he'll sign is the 6.5mil per Qualifying Offer they'll have to do every year until he becomes a free agent - jdfitz77
Ah, good to know. I thought in his new deal they had to match his final year of his current contract for some reason. |

I think what Nieuwendyk is doing is trying to replicate the veteran 99 team that beat us. They keep signing dinosaurs like Jagr, Whitney and now Gonchar |

What's your point? Vokoun played behind florida's defense before Campbell and Jovo, who both also suck, and then went to Washington and pittsburgh. None of those 3 teams have suffocating defenses. Vokoun has been on 3 teams in 3 years and still put up better numbers each year, despite never having a good d corps in front of him - schiefer466
Shouldnt matter whose got better defense, your too mixed up in the numbers. A vezina winning silver medal younger goalie is worth alot more, regardless of those numbers you pulled off nhl.com. Hockey is about heart, hardwork & passion, the moment your start talking numbers youve ruined your players. Whats the most important stat in hockey? Wins!
Whose got more wins then |

Added a top pairing dman to probably the most lackluster blue-line in hockey for just a 6th round pick. Was playing 24 minutes a night for Ottawa in playoffs.
Nill is on record staying that Gonchar got a two year deal because he still wants to win a cup and is in excellent shape despite his age. Him being 39 means nothing to the Stars.
Highest scoring Russian dman of all time and the active leading scorer for dmen in the leauge, no other dman has his 200+ goals or 700+ points |

Which is just a general cliche that means nothing when your talking about two completely different players.
They don't play the same at all. Their both skilled, but Gogo beats you with his legs. Gonchar has never been as fleet of foot and beats you with his brain.
You can name 1,000 different in game scenarios with or without the puck, each player will handle them uniquely. Just because their the same player type in NHL13 doesn't mean their the same player. |

Sorry but I don't play video games, unlike yourself. The point of this whole thing was, Gonchar is not worth 5 mill a yr at 39. |

His salary is irrelevant to my team. Still playing 24 minutes a night in the playoffs for this years eventual Jack Adams award winner. That is your opinion. |

Your focusing on something irrelevant. He is still playing at a high level. His game has regressed little if at all when he was considered amongst some of the better dmen in the leauge back when he was in Pitt.
Everyone keeps mentioning his age....and that's it. It's irrelevant. |

Also a steady vet presence that can still play 20 minutes.
Trust me, we rotated half of our AHL blue-line and Aaron Rome through our starting six this year. He's a huge upgrade. |

Ummmm...
If Gonchar still wants to "win a cup" then why did he sign w Dallas?
If he's still as good as you say,
Wouldn't there be A LOT of BETTER teams out there that would want him?
Dallas didn't even make the playoffs |

Mark Streit will get 6 mill, he's 4 soon to be 5 years younger then Gonchar. Both good players just don't think Gonchar is worth 5 mill at his age. |
