The year prior is irrelevant, every team goes through drastic changes in the offseason and is level once the new season starts. No one on the planet has any clue how good the Stars will be next year.

How many times has a team that missed the playoffs get to the cup the next year?

Sure it's all level,
But you would think a guy like Gonchar would be looking for a team more like Pittsburgh, Chicago, etc
There's def teams out there w more talent than others, and previous years play does count bc it's a measure of just how good the team was
Most teams don't take a drastic turn for the better or worse from one year to the next...
Not without major injuries or drastic player change
