Briere buyout:
Ok so likely everyone is aware Flyers are buying out Briere, Briere even knows this by now. SO why doesn't the Flyers call in Danny and say, Danny we are going to buy you out (give him the whole thank you for being apart of this team blah blah) and politely ask him. listen, we are trying to improve this team moving forward would you waive your no trade clause and give us a list of teams your willing to go to and save us a buyout and allow us to get some asset(s) in return to help us. And you keep reminding him it doesn't matter if you say yes or no your ass is still being bought out , but you could help us moving forward.
Seriously tho why would this not be a possibility? His actual $$ owed is low for a team wanting a vet player and it wouldnt cost much to acquire him as the Flyers just want to rid that contract and save a buyout. - Buzzo
The Flyers wouldn't need to buy him out if he agrees to a trade...
It would be very helpful if he would agree to waive his NTC, no doubt about it. I'm just not sure there's a downside - other than realizing he's near the end of his career and his performance is dropping - to Briere getting bought out by the Flyers and then looking for a new team.

I'm arguing that concussions do and don't end some careers, I'm saying that Crosby's are blown out of proportion.
Crosby didn't play his best in 4 games, true, but even the best player in the world has bad games. He's been dominate all year, about time he had a bad stretch. It's not like Malkin was performing either and we're not making injury excuses for him. Boston figured out a way to shut both guys down. Kudos to them because that's no easy task. - NickTheKid87

I don't think Read for Bernier will happen. Kings will want more. Also, Clowe is bascially a watered down version of Simmonds and Hartnell. I would rather stay away from him. The center depth (or lack thereof) may cause problems. - NickTheKid87
Ok so replace Clowe with Weiss.

The sudden 10% drop in the cap could change the landscape of who's available... CBO's, salary-dumps, guys on waivers coming out of camp... it wouldn't surprise me to see some real HQ players moving around this summer. - Tomahawk
I wouldn't mind Brad Richards for cheap if he's bought out and if the Flyers end up dealing BSchenn and/or Couturier. I think Richards problems stemmed from being misused. This is also why I could see him returning to NYR for 1 more year. |

Well, if Briere is bought out, he gets 2/3rds of the $5mm left on his deal, plus whatever another team is willing to sign him for. So financially it makes sens to take the CBO and a new contract and make more money - Jsaquella
I thought they got all their money on a compliance. Other than not counting against the cap I thought that was what differed it from a regular buyout. |

If Briere accepts a trade he makes 3 million the next 2 seasons, and has limited choice where to go.
If he refuses he makes 3/4 for the remaining contract plus he gets to choose anywhere he wants to play for a brand new contract...
EASY business decision. |

I hope so -- I don't know if the boards have discussed it much of late, but the Flyers absolutely need another RW who can score 15-20 goals and, if Simon Gagne isn't re-signed, a LW who can do the same.
How they get them...I don't know. Maybe FA, trade, draft. Perhaps Tye McGinn's skating improves, or Michael Raffl or Petr Straka have one of those rookie seasons like Matt Read's.
But the Flyers absolutely need secondary scoring. It wasn't just the defense last season -- there were games where goals were nowhere to be found. |

Offensively, last year's Flyers lived and died on the PP.
Secondary scoring and better 5 on 5 play is a must or they'll be golfing and we'll be talking about 18 year old kids none of have seen play for another spring/summer. |

Nope. The only difference is that it doesn't count against the cap. The accelerated CBO's of Redden and Gomez required the Rangers and Habs to pay all of the salary due for 2012-13 and carry the cap hit for the season, and the rest of the deal would be paid at 2/3rds |

The way to get Briere to waive that NTC is to say, we ARENT buying you out, but we will expect you to be a limited player, 3rd line, learn to check, no PP time. Then he might want out. |

I agree that any player can have a bad stretch, and Pitt as a whole - mostly thanks to Boston - had a real bad stretch of games. And perhaps the reason for zero points over 4 games is just that simple.
I would argue that a concussion (from a relatively innocent-looking hit) that keeps a player out of the game for 10 months can in no way be blown out of proportion. |

They couldn't score so they got Nash but I don't think the lack of offense had to with personnel so much as the system. - NickTheKid87
Yeah, they'd only go as far as that system could carry them, grinding the opposition into the ground. Without that system, without a lot of the players that made it successful (Prust, Dubinsky, Fedotenko, Rupp, Sauer), without the coach that defined them as a group, I don't know where that leaves them. |

Definitely a new coach, for sure.
A new GM might depend on what kind of mood Ed Snider is in......
Ah, who am I kidding, if they miss the playoffs again, Homer is probably gone too. |
