Kind of ironic the examples you gave, because I hated both the Pronger trade and the Downie pick. I do like the back end of last year's draft though. I don't know if any of those guys pan out or not, but it was a departure from picking the Klotz or Mathers kind of guys, which really ticks me off. - TheGreat28
I love the Pronger deal. Nobody could have saw his injury coming. |

So who has this same article for Schenn's draft year? Then we can get a better value on him to compare Schenn and Couts. - coffee junkie
Couts' stock went up because he played for the Flyers the year he was drafted because the Flyers had an immediate need. Schenn didn't spend significant time in the NHL until the 3rd season after he was drafted, also with the Flyers. Schenn was behind Kopitar, Brown, Stoll, and...? I'm not sure who the 4th line center was on the Kings then. |

They still had Handzus back then, with Trevor Lewis and Lokionov and Oscar Moller in front of Schenn as youngsters. They could really afford to keep him simmering in the stew. |

I love the Pronger deal. Nobody could have saw his injury coming. - dingo8urbaby
I remember hearing the trade report on WIP while driving and dropping an F-bomb so loud it scared by 9 month old daughter in the back seat and made her cry. I know...great parent lol.
I hated it because a) I think they overpaid, compared to the prospects that Anaheim gave up to get a younger Pronger, and more importantly b) given his playing style and age I really didn't see him playing out that contract. Of course I didn't see it going down the way it did...I kinda saw him breaking down and missing more and more time each season.
I hated adding Sbisa in the deal. Not that he hit the ceiling that I thought at the time (still time tho), but I'd still love to have him on the Flyers. Ironically my feeling was they never develop young defenseman!
At the time I said they had to win the cup in next 2 years in order for me to eat crow on the deal, and it almost happened. But I didn't like it then and don't now.
I know I'm in the minority. |

Just by going by Bill's blog, out of B Schenn and Couturier. One of them is playing at a high level, in a certain aspect of the game. Maybe we have a different opinion on what each players upside is. It's a hypothetical based on potential. - MJL
I see both Couts and Schenn as having very similar - high - ceilings. Couts has actually played more NHL games than Schenn.

Did Zeus go right from the Flyers to the Kings? I can't remember. Either way, Schenn had little chance cracking that lineup. |

I'm comfortable going after Ristolainen, Zadorov or Pulock with #11. It's all a bit of a crapshoot. - wolfhounds
I'm comfortable with it too, BUT, if moving up to the 5th overall costs you Coburn, the 11th overall, and a 2nd... I would do it, just to get Nichushkin, Barkov, or Drouin. Any one of those guys and you don't feel bad at all trading Couturier for an offensive or 2-way defenseman. |

Yes Couturier has. So you see Schenn also having potential to be a Selke level defensive forward? |

And, as rough comparable, the day after Boston wins the SC, would you trade Couturier, Laughton, 11th pick, next year's first, plus Ghost for Chara?

Zeus was traded to the 'Hawks for Kyle Freakin' Calder... he got hurt for most of the season, then went to LA as a UFA. |

OK, well
Lupul (7th overall pick) --> Couturier (8th)
Sbisa (19th pick) --> Laughton (20th)
1st round 2010 --> 1st round 2013
1st round 2011 --> 1st round 2014
2010 3rd 2010 --> Ghost (3rd round)
35 year old Pronger vs. 36 year old Chara
Just to illustrate what they gave up. |

I felt the same way you did at the time.
I thought they gave up too much future for a guy his age.
I give Homer credit, it very nearly worked.

I didn't like the Carter trade at all when it went down.
Voracek seemed to be an underachiever and the the 7th pick was a complete unknown.
Carter was worth more then this in my eyes, even though you could argue that he too was somewhat of an underachiever given his size and skill and abilities.
In retrospect it looks better now. |

In fairness to Holmgren, they were a little closer then than they are now. Still wouldn't have done either trade. |
