So what? Its less than he would have gotten on the open market and considering what they get in return for the long term, this is a solid deal. - Emperor Filonius
Malkin could easily get $11-12M on the open market. Everyone wishes they had a generational talent on their roster.
Where's the guy who told us Letang would be the obvious choice?

Sid's hit is $8.7 for 12 years though...I think it was a good deal and something we expected. Geno has Ovi's cap hit now. - Orpik44
I think that under the new CBA, 8 years is the max length contract. So Sid gets less per year (in terms of cap hit) but more money guaranteed due to the length of his deal...Malkin gets more per season in terms of cap hit but less aggregate $$$.
Nice didn't take long but that's not the friendliest cap hit. About 800k more then Sid's hit. - dbell646
Crosby+Malkin=18.2 cap hit
Perry+Getzlaf= 16.85
Shero did pretty good. I know we got Sid to sign before the new CBA, but to have those 2 locked up at that number isn't bad at all. And when the cap goes up significantly next year it will look even better. And the year after that, and so on

How much do you think it'll take to sign Mark Streit? I'd say he'll get Gonch's money. - Orpik44
That'll be the comparable. His agent says they're looking for four years, so I expect three. I imagine he'll try to push it up to $18m, in the end I expect something between a $5.5 and $6m cap hit.
That's me trying to be realistic. I don't like nor hate this deal. I'm not a huge fan of trading for an expiring contract, I think it gives the player all the leverage at the bargaining table. Just ask Ilya.

This. Shero now has cost certainty for his 2 most important and expensive pieces of the puzzle. Now he can got to work with seeing how everyone else can fit together. Going to be an interesting summer.

Geno will be like 34-35 yo after this deal expires, $76M total.
Sid will be 37-38 yo, $104.4M total.
Geno would have to get a 4 year deal at $7.1M per to match Sid's money (Highly unlikely he will get it)
So glad this is done so all the stupid rumor mongering about Geno being traded or Geno signing in Russia can cease. - Emperor Filonius
Great deal. Doesn't affect next season. Good to see Geno and Sid together for the rest of their careers. Those two will keep us in Cup contention for the next decade.

I'm not Shero's biggest fan (not to say I think he's terrible or anything), but he did right here. Anybody who thinks this is a bad contract doesn't understand the new CBA nor the changing salary structure.

Y'know, I shouldn't be surprised people buy into those rumors, but I am. I've never seen any sign that Malkin wanted out of Pittsburgh. - BulliesPhan87
It's generally wishful thinking from various avenues...Canadian and Russian writers looking for a story where there isn't one. They used to do the same thing with Crosby...the wishful thinking out of Canada was that since the Habs were Sid's favorite player when he was growing up that he would bolt for Montreal the first chance he got, even though anyone who ever actually listened to Crosby could tell in an instant that he was committed to the Pens....so they moved on to Malkin, even though has always made it very clear that he loves playing here and does not mind sharing the limelight with Sidney.

I don't know if he's worth above $5M...at all. He's a good PP quarterback, I'll tell you that. He looked slow against the Pens in the playoffs. Not physical but smart.

I'm happy he signed but since you're throwing comparables heres one
Krejci/Bergeron $10.25
Full disclosure I'm still angry with the Pens I will be until July so disregard my posts until then.

let the flyers overpay for him and then have to buyout bryz, briere and put pronger back on ltir... which comes to the question...why is pronger not retired yet?

I think the reality is that $5m doesn't buy you what it used to, and the Flyers really aren't in a position to be choosy. It was either this, or make an unsavory deal for somebody like Yandle. Not a knock on Yandle, but I think the asking price isn't realistic. I think whatever Canucks fans said they'd do Edler for Simmonds are misreading the trade market, too.
Our defense corps is replete with defensively minded guys, if he signs I think Laviolette can hide Streit well enough when it comes to matchups.

I guess they need send something to print everyday, can't always be grounded in reality.
