Commiting to 8 years for $6.5M per is pretty good. If the Penguins make this offer, he better take it. He'll be playing with Sid and Geno forever.

Off course

Reaching the final season of his four-year, $14 million deal, Letang wants at minimum a five-year deal with a no-trade clause and $7 million annually, according to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.

We definitely can give him 3 more years and take $0.5-0.7M per yer off his demand.

shero has benefited from inheriting a team with malkin and crosby. a definite carrot for him, but it still presents a challenge to fill out a team around a pair of guys eating up such a large chunk of the cap.

holmgren gets basically an unlimited bank account at his disposal (i understand there is a cap, but actual dollars for him are a total nonissue). but i wouldnt hold his resources against him when evaluating him.

- stayinthefnnet

The Neal, Hossa/Dupuis, and Staal trades were all good trades, no doubt.

Holmgren does get big resources financially, but we also have a very involved owner, who expects aggressive management and instant results. Sometimes, it works out (see: recovery from 06-07 season). Other times, it does not (see: Ilya Bryzgalov). Not to say Holmgren avoids all blame, but it is a tricky situation.

Thanks.

I wouldn't read to far into it. Guy is obviously disappointed 2 days after losing. He prob didn't even talk to anyone including his agent at that point.

"would you be willing to maybe take less than what you'd take on the open market? Cause a lot of the other guys on this room have done that..."
KL: I mean, it's not my call. I'm not there....don't know the progress so far..

$6M per for 8 years. Take it or leave it.

Yeah, I mean it definitely seemed like a bad route to take when answering that question but eh, we shall see. Time will tell.

There's the losing the game a couple days earlier factor. He seems a bit down. I just hope we can get it done. We all love the guy.

no i totally understand. like i said, both shero and holmgren have their fortunate aspects of their job, but there is a flip side to both of the coins that present a challenge. i dont think holmgren gives up on bob so quickly and overcompensates by bidding against himself for bryz if snider is not breathing down his neck so much. but still, homer has done some good moves as well. the richards and carter returns were fantastic. he is just never going to have the benefit of letting a team's youth properly develop because of the constant expectations to win in the present

How is it not his call?? I understand his agent deals with most of the negotiating, but he can say, "I wouldn't mind taking a little less to stay with Pitt". 8 years for 6.5 mil per year is the max I would do

yeah, thats essentially a no. someone will throw 7 plus at him. shero has to realize that by now, and the writing is on the wall that he isnt exactly going to take a discount. i cant see shero so poorly managing his assets that he walks for nothing

That's what I thought when I heard it. He didn't sound like Duper or Cookie. He likes the team but I doubt he takes a big discount.

I guess he's mad at Shero for fleecing him on his 2nd deal (4years, $14M). Come on Kristopher...sign already.

that deal worked out good for the pens, but at the time it was largely based on potential. 3.5 became a great bargain, but if he became an also ran it wouldve sucked. those are the types of deals you need to hit on to win in todays game, and it sure worked out for the pens. however, i dont think we will see him signing anything in the near future

So Geno is gonna be around awhile and that is good. Blysma, wow I think he got off pretty easy. I like him for the regular season, I'm just not sure how many times a team can misuse 20% of the roster in the playoffs and not get booted.

I'll support him and realize he is only 4.5 years into his NHL coaching career but man these next 5-6 years are going to be critical for the team and what the Crosby and Geno years are going to go down in history as. I'm not sure he is the guy, but they didn't ask me.

I hate to see Letang go, Dmen like that do not come around very often and he will only get better. It would suck to see him actually win a Norris somewhere else. I hope he finds a way to take a bit less to continue to develop as a Penguin.

In fairness to him, everything he says publically (and Shero as well), is part of the negotiating process.

It was a leading question... if he says "Yeah, I'd take less to stay here...", Shero's ears will perk up and use that.

for all of my female doging at him, it will still suck to see him go. however, i just cant see a scenario in which he stays. he simply isnt worth the 7 million he will command, nor can this team support another contract of that magnitude

Yeah what is the rest of the team going to look like? I thought a good way to go would have been bouncing Flower out the door, but doesn't look like that is going to happen. Maybe the cap goes up in 1014-15 to 84 mill. haha.

Tanger looks to be the odd man out even though when he isn't in the lineup the team really does struggle. Shero can't even go out and get top players because they will want big money and it defeats the purpose of losing Letang.

It's going to be a wild offseason for sure.

We'll be stunned when we see how the market for puck moving d-men is out there. I don't think we can get anything significant for less than $4M per. And I'm being generous.

in all seriousness, I hope we trade letang regardless. you could argue that this is our last real piece with significant trade value to revamp this team.

penguins need to get younger and faster at forward. Penguins should be looking for 2 young forwards with potential and a 1st round pick. maybe more if you can get a gentlemen's agreement with the team and letang.

losing letang and not getting a suitable replacement would be worrisome.

Oprik, Martin, Despres, Eaton.

trade niskanen. could probably get a gritty forward or late 2nd round pick.

engelland should be the 7th dman and never see the ice come playoffs.

could a guy like rob scuderi return?

you don't have to have elite names in your defense. what you need are guys who will play defense and who operate under a solid system.

definitely. for all of his mistakes, how can it be justified that letang is only going to command a million or so more than (frank)ing gonchar and streit
