I always like to think if it were me in that situation, I'd take a pay cut for say, 6- 7 million. Because hey, I'm not greedy.
Who knows what I'd do with the 9.5 contact sitting in front of me though.
- david22
A lot of bad decisions that can be bought with that extra 3.5 mil.... |

I have the same thoughts, but like you said, who is going to turn that down is presented to them?
If i were a gm i would try to set my roseter up with a crap load of great Players. Easier said than done though.
First 2 forward lines - $5 mil a player (30)
First 2 D pairings - $5 mil a player (20)
3rd forward line - $2 Mil a player (6)
4th forward line - 800K a player (2.4)
3rd D pairing - 800K a player (1.6)
Starting Goalie - 3Mil
Backup - 1Mil
Total 64Mil

I think he meant in terms of signing bonuses and options that would put him over what Pittsburgh gave him.
I'm glad he's re-signed. All Shero has to do now is figure out a way to get Cooke and Dupuis back. Cooke's up in the air, but I think Dupuis will take a discount to remain a Penguin.
Iginla, Morrow, and Murray can move on to greener pastures. I enjoyed them, but I don't want Shero going crazy to keep them.
Letang is a whole other headache entirely... |

12M/year in the open market. Somebody would give it to him. The cap is going down for next year but after that it is only going to go up up up. |

He could have gotten FAR more on the open market, or back in Russia, and you'd kill to have him in Buffalo at that number. |

DENVER POST: Adrian Dater reports Buffalo Sabres director of amateur scouting Kevin Devine said his club has contacted the Colorado Avalanche to express interest in the first overall pick. Dater wrote “immediate speculation” on one deal “goes like this: goalie Ryan Miller, center Mikhail Grigorenko, a defensive prospect and the No. 8 pick to the Avs for the first pick.” He believes the Avs should reject such an offer, citing Miller’s age, salary and UFA status next summer, and doesn’t consider Grigorenko in the same class as Nathan MacKinnon.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: I don’t know where Dater got that “immediate speculation” from, as I doubt that’s what’s been offered by the Sabres, if they’ve made a serious pitch at all. Still, I agree with Dater such a package offer from the Sabres wouldn’t be worthy of parting with the first overall pick.
In case anyone didn't see. - SABRES 89
If they want more than that I might have to pass. |

Geno gets 9.5? Sets the market high. Is Vanek 2/3 the player Malkin is?
Malkin - 560 points since 06-07 (217 Goals, 458 Games played)
Vanek - 440 points since 06-07 (225 Goals, 504 Games played)*
If you ignore the fact that Malkin is a Center on a very good team, Vanek is 21% less productive. Although it seems as though Lil geno gets hurt more often.
That would put Vanek averaging 7.5 mil a year in his next contract. Reasonable to think he will command about 7/year

He left his legacy intact by staying on a good team.
Of course if there isn't a NMC/NTC this contract makes him a very valuable trade commodity. |

Vanek is going to cash in as well. The question will be if it is worth investing in him from a Sabres perspective. |

Vanek is going to be the top UFA in the market in 2014, easily throw on a 15% markup on his current cap hit because of it. |

In FA, Vanek will get at least 7. If I were the Sabres I would try to do 6 for 40. He probably wouldn't accept, hence move him |

Well, it IS nice to know that the owners league-wide are ensuring us that we won't have another lockout with these reasonable short-term contracts. |

So its basically grig, #8 and A prospect. IF mackinnon is the next Stamkos then you pull the trigger. if the prospect in demand is Armia, then maybe no.
