I hope not. Where does he fit? 4th line center? I'd love to waste a year of his ELC so he can play 7 minutes a night with Rosehill and Rinaldo. - bradleyc4
Guarantee there will be a chance he moves up to the top 9. There will be injuries and times where they bench gets shortened. i think playing 9-11 minutes/game is realistic with him skating on the 3rd/4th line.
At some point, you have to play him. And with a strong 1-3C in Giroux, Schenn, Coots (barring a shift to wing), he's gotta get in somewhere. Let him start out on the 4th and earn his ice team to move up. Most young players do. |

FWIW, many are projecting him to make the club this fall.
I don't know what the rush is, myself, but that's what I've read here and elsewhere. - johndewar
He almost made the team last year. I dont see much advantage of him staying in juniors another year. As an over-ager there is a decrease in development IMO. |

It's very likely he'll be ready to play for the flyers after the great year he had and with the cup of coffee last year. Not going to worry about elc or line placement if the kid shows he's ready the team needs him |

I'd rather wait until he's 20 so they have the option of demoting him to the AHL when he's not getting top-9 minutes. |

Like I was saying, you would use Laughton to get a young defenseman to start developing on the 3rd pairing like Rundblad or M.Reiley or Brodin or Gormley.
No Next year would look like:
Timonen-Schenn
Grossmann-Streit
Gustefsson-One of the above. or Gervais - youarewrong
I'd like to keep Laughton because int he long-term he's more acceptable as a 3rd line center. Coots isn't. I'd rather trade BS than Laughton, just because it makes more sense in the long term fit. Also, I think M.Reilly would require more than Laughton to acquire. He's an elite prospect with top pair potential. I remember over in the Toronto board people laughed at me when I suggested Coots/BS for Rielly |

As much as I love Lauridsen, I don't think he's quite ready to be a permanent NHLer. In 2 seasons, though, I hope the Lauridsen train will be running through Philly. |

If your going to get the 5th overall here is the path I think your going to have to take.
Step 1: Trade Coburn, 11th overall, to Edmonton for 7th overall.
Step 2: Trade Meszaros, 7th overall, 2nd Rounder for 5th overall.
And that only guarentees you either Nichushkin or Barkov. But I think I like the idea. - youarewrong
Coburn struggled last year no doubt but he's also been a pretty decent player ever other season here. I think he will rebound. I'd also be pretty pissed if with the lack of quality defensemen available they gave him away just to move up 4 spots in the draft, that's stupid. |

Goal scoring? - 77rams
in that one aspect of the game, yeah OV gets it. when he is on his game, only stamkos can come close. but overall id still go malkin. and for all his ridicule about being soft in the clutch, he has a conn smythe that says otherwise.
for the money they make, id wish they both gave consistent, intelligent effort, but id give malkin the edge in drive as well. |

Malkin has better hands (see: his goal vs. TB last year). Ovechkin's more of a speed/power straight ahead guy. I will say, when he's coming down the wing, there's no one more exciting in the game that him. Kinda like how Kovalchuk used to be. |

Luke Schenn was a pleasant surprise. He was the teams second best defenseman behind Timonen.

really? i realize i may be at risk for bias, but i just dont see how. both have their obvious incredible talent and detriments, but i just dont see how you go with OV over malkin in nearly any situation - stayinthefnnet

I agree, and I think he's only going to keep getting better. JVR scored all those goals so it seems to the casual observer the Leafs won this deal, but I think if Schenn continues to progress which he showed some signs of this year, the Flyers will ultimately get the better of this deal longterm, considering its alot harder to find good defensemen than forwards. |

yeah he is definitely a bull. but still, if you are able to corral him to the outside, that just becomes a turn over. and his defensive game will probably always just be an afterthought. i think the difference will become even more apparent as they age, as malkin's hands and passing will hold up better than OV's freight train style.
also, justifiable or not, some of my preference is based solely on position. ive always felt that a dominant center can dictate a hell of a lot more than a dominant winger. |

I get that drafting dmen is tough but for the Flyers it is down right impossible.
Almost every team in the league has at least 2 starting dmen (that they have drafted) in their line up that are contributing. I'm not talking about All-Star or Norris Trophy type players, just guys who can suit up and play.
Why can teams like Phoenix figure out the great mystery of drafting dmen but the Flyers can't?
And I understand the whole "Best Player Available" thing. But many teams find good quality dmen well after the top 30 picks.
If the Flyers are just gonna draft and develop forwards because that's their strength....I am fine with that. But they are gonna have to trade some young forwards for dmen. It may hurt but that's what you get with this type of drafting strategy.
.....And with trading your 2 biggest assests (Carter & Richards) and not getting back 1 stinking dmen prospect is just silly.

Does Coburn and Meszaros get us close to Dmitry Kulikov? We can take a guy like Kopecky back to make the salary work, but he's a big part of their top 9 and that might not be worth it to them. They have to make a spot for Mackinnon or Drouin I guess, but I don't know they do a deal like this.
A guy we really need to pluck away? Brandon Gormley. I'd trade Laughton for him I think.
One of Laughton, Coots, or Schenn eventually has to go, especially if they realize they don't like Schenn on the wing. Long term, we only can really afford all four for so long. |

His progress stunted in Toronto. Seems like fresh scenery helped both. |
