yeah, cant really sugarcoat that. still, doesnt matter how you acquire them. parting with a valuable forward could bring in a nice one - stayinthefnnet
That's the thing, they still acquire them. When they went to the SCF in 1985 & 87, they didn't have many home grown defensemen, either.
Or in 2010. Strangely enough, not many people female doged about their draft record and defnsemen then |

Bernie also thought Dominic Roussel was the next great French Canadian goalie - Jsaquella
What he meant to say was that he thought he was the next great French Canadian fry cook at Tim Horton's. |

And way up until this Season. One Season where the defense wasn't up to par. And it's like the Organization is doomed!

His progress stunted in Toronto. Seems like fresh scenery helped both. - mmold
Agreed. However the Leafs were using JVR was obviously alot more effective than how Lavy was using him. I think fresh scenery and different coaches and linemates can really make a difference. |

I thought Roussel was going to be a good goalie. He showed a lot of promise, but never quite managed to get the consistency down. |

I think a Briere for J-Bo trade could help both team tremendously.
Briere adresses a need for skill up-front in St. Louis. With McDonald's retirement, there is an even bigger need for scoring on their top two lines. Briere can play center or wing much like Backes, Berglund and Oshie. Gives them combinations. Also gives them a proven playoff scorer, an area they have been lackluster in the past two years. Briere could be the missing piece that makes this good team a great team and gets them over the final hump.
St. Louis then gets to worry about reupping Captain Kirk and Pietrangelo. Flyers obviously get a top 4 dman who could end up being here for the long haul as he's still in his prime. Also means we can use a compliance buy-out on Meszaros if need be, or we can keep it in our back-pocket for next off-season. Resign Gagne with some of the cap room from buying out Bryz
Hartnell-Giroux-Voracek
Gagne-Schenn-Simmonds
Talbot-Couturier-Read
T.McGinn-Laughton-Rinaldo
Timonen-Coburn
Bouwmeester-Schenn
Grossman/Meszaros-Gustafson
I am ALL for bringing back Emery as well to spell Mason

St. Louis could do a lot better then Briere in trading Bouwmeester. There is a premium for good defenseman in this League. That has no prayer of happening.

It was gut wrenching to watch in the early '90's when he shared the net with Tommy Soderstrom. |

In Toronto, JvR was on the top line, playing 17 minutes no matter what. In Philly, there was more scoring depth and flexibility to move him down to other lines when he wasn't productive.
He consistently played with his team's best players a a Leaf. |

JVR's biggest issue here was his injuries. He had a nice Season but struggled down the stretch.

Its really hard to say exactly what his value is. But considering his recent injury history, I cant imagine that he's going to bring back a big haul. Now, if you're asking if the #11, #41, AND Mesz will move us up in the draft... probably, but not to #1.

winning cures all ills. the same people calling for changes in the pens general makeup (myself included) would bow to Bylsma if the pens won it next year.
the flyers lose, timonen is too old. if they win, he is a savvy veteran |

thats a discussion point. i think it does because of the inordinate number and/or value of assets needed to acquire them. the flyers traded a 2nd line winger and the equiv of 3 #1 picks to acquire pronger and were willing to part w/ 4 in the RFA bid for weber. even if the flyers were to develop 1 of their own top 4 dmen every 5-7 yrs, it would be a tremendous boon to their asset pool. |

Yes you can, and you should. That's why teams acquire and have depth at crucial positions such as defense. I'm not against trading Meszaros if they bring in another capable defenseman with a lower Cap hit. This is the same premise as when you were calling for Coburn to be traded for a draft pick.

If you had Ryan McGill along the wall to help, you would be jittery too.
Roussel and Soderstrom were horrendous, those were some dark times to be a Flyers fan.

No question about that. And when you're losing things that normally wouldn't matter or even mentioned. Suddenly becomes news.

Now THAT era had a horrible defense corps. When Greg Hawgood is a fan favorite, either they suck or everyone is drunk |
