can take a pass and turn it into a goal better than anybody we have outside of G. i think jagr's time as an effective plyr is drawing to a close...esp over 82 gms. |

Thats my fear with Jagr. He is a bull with the puck, and when he gets it down low can still be effective. However they cant expect too much from him, more like a Knuble signing.
The veteran leadership and the approach he takes to the game would be enough for me though. That can be infused into the kids on the team. If it comes down to Jagr or Morrow though, I take Morrow. |

I think Voracek will be an even better scorer this year, last year's breakout will give him confidence. Also, I think that we will see a breakout from either Schenn or Couturier or maybe even both |

It is possible, but but I think the reason they moved on Streit is that the price on Yandle, Shattenkirk, Edler, etc was too high and they balked. - Jsaquella
I'd like to throw in there that it makes them look a bit less desperate maybe. |

His injury wasn't the result of age. If he went down with the type of injury that ended Rathje's career, sure, then it would have been poor foresight. But Pronger took a stick in the eye. That happens to 18 year olds |

It makes them look a lot less desperate. I just fear if he doesn't sign they will get desperate. Streit buys them time between now and when Timonen retires. |

David-Alexandre Beauregard, draft pick of the Sharks got a stick caught under his shield in the QMJHL, lost an eye and his career ended at age 18.
Can't say there was a reasonable expectation for Pronger to go out that way |

I do think it was foolish for the team to expect their window on defense to stay open for so long. They got damn lucky with Timonen as it is imo.
They had two aging warhorses, and especially after Pronger went down they did really little to bring in quality youth into that back end. Thats where my issue lies. I think it they were a bit more pro-active and that scouting department was better we would have a little more to show than Guss.
They got good deals for Richards, and Carter but to not bring back one d-man in that deal? Meh. |

I really wanted Voynov over B Schenn at the time of the Richards deal. But you can't really blame them. Dealing Richey and Carter at the same time left a huge offensive void. They needed to get all the offensive prospects they could to hope they got someone to replicate it.
Pronger was also healthy and Mesz had just come off a beast of a year. It is what it is... |

Im open to the idea. Schenn to LW. Richards as the second line center. He is 33 and has plenty of hockey left and he can win faceoffs. 4.5 for 4 yrs would seriously interest me. Bruins showing you can never have too many centers.
As long as it isnt to replace a traded young center. Keep your hands off Homer. |

U guys should just trade for Miller
The guy is still really good, just has horrible team defense in front of him...
Philly would not only be back in the playoffs,
But again be a contender with a great goalie in net
and he'd make your defense look a lot better too
Miller on Philly and u guys are the 2nd best team in the East
The Sabres will be laughable without him next year
Then ppl will realize just how good Miller really was
I have no doubt he'll win a cup if he goes to a decent team
Ya, it'd kill me to see him do it with Philly,
But it would very likely happen |

So I just looked, and u guys are screwed by the cap next year pretty hard...
This I what I'd do...
Simmonds, #11, Bryzgalov(Sabres buyout), 2014 1st...
To Buffalo for...
Miller(Sabres pay half his salary), Flynn, 2014 2nd
Sign Streit to a 5.0mil cap hit
Sign Clarkson to a 5.0mil cap hit
Sign a decent cheap vet defenseman, 1.0mil
Resign Gagne on the cheap, 1.0mil
Buyout Meszaros & Grossman
CLARKSON-Giroux-Read
Schenn-Couturier-Voracek
Hartnell-Briere-FLYNN
Gagne-Talbot-Rinaldo
Schenn-Timonen
Coburn-STREIT
Gustafsson-(VET D-man)
MILLER
Mason
Injury fill-in with youth like Laughton, etc
That's a cap hit around 63mil, give or take
Boom, you're in the playoffs
And have a shot if Timonen holds up and Streit works out
Otherwise,
You Gotta buyout Briere & Bryzgalov...
And unless u can trade Meszaros &/or Grossman,
You don't have much $$$ to sign two top9 forwards and a decent goalie option
Or u gotta hope Mason can actually stop the puck
I know he looked good for u guys last year, but that was a real small sample size to risk your entire season on next year
Regardless, it's gonna be a tight squeeze for u guys, and if whatever u do at goalie doesn't work out...
You're Fd real bad
Good luck though,
No matter what, at least you'll be better than us next year
Hahaha |

Let me correct you on a couple things you might not know if you don't spend a lot of time on this board.
1) Briere is almost inevitably being bought out, not Mez and Grossmann
2) Most people here want us to keep Grossmann, he's a very good shut-down player and a quite reasonable cap hit.
That's a heavy price for Miller, one I wouldn't be willing to pay for a question mark goalie. Also, how are we gonna sign a veteran dman with less than 1 mil of room on the cap? There's just alot of things that don't make sense here. |

Why would you waste a buyout on a guy (Meszaros) with one year left on his contract? Also, Grossmann is an ideal partner for Gustafsson.
Why would they trade Simmonds for Miller and then sign Clarkson for more money? That's illogical. Not only is Simmonds younger, he's a better player.
As for buying out Bryz and Briere, Hell, I'm actually looking forward to that.

They have enough dynamic players. What they need are some hard nose tough good skating Wingers who are hard on the puck, and good along the wall.

With Hartnell and Voracek, I doubt that's true. Voracek scored at a 38 goal pace this past Season. And he is going to turn 24 in August. |

The window closed one year after the trades. Certainly it was a bit of a risky proposition, but Pronger was still playing at a high level when he got the stick in the face that basically ended his career.
Also, they could still get a defenseman by trading one of the assets they got for Carter or Richards...and then people will female dog that they gave up too soon on Couturier or Schenn.
For some folks, complaining about things seems to be the only reason they are fans of a team. |
