yes I think he is playing for certain in that situation - Marc D
I ask because you can use certain forwards on the point. Something about a 4 on 3 Power Play really points out to me who our best players are. Laviolette may only use 4 players for the entire 2 minutes. |

Sure, we could...but Marc-Andre Bergeron can't play 5v5.
At worst, Mark Streit is still a Top 6 defenseman. The Islanders had to play him more minutes because, to be honest, their options were even less appealing than the Flyers' in the bottom pair.
The Flyers can protect Streit a little better than the Islanders can, because no matter what anyone thinks of Kimmo Timonen, Luke Schenn and Nicklas Grossmann, those guys are more effective in the defensive and neutral zones than Joe Finley, Matt Carkner, and Thomas Hickey.
That's just a straight-up fact. Not ripping the Islanders, but that's a fact -- we can "hide" Streit better, take advantage of what he does well and minimize what he doesn't. - AllInForFlyers
Finley barely played and Carkner played in only half of the regular season games. On the offense side yeah Streit was better then Hickey but on D it wasn't even close Hickey was much better in his own zone then streit. You say you can hide Streit better then the isles did but your team actually gave up two more goals then the isles during the regular season so its not like your D is that much better, No?

per Dreger;
Streit's agreement will also include a limited no-trade. He would submit a list of teams he would be willing to move to.
well duh - Marc D
Limited NTC is much better then a full NTC or a full NMC.

I look at it this way. On the Isles Streit was their #1, #2 guy on the blueline. On the Flyers he is a #4, #5 guy who gets power play minutes.
Different situation will mean different results. (i hope)

By the end of the year he was playing 4-5 type minutes because of how bad he was in his own end. |

I could be wrong, but it just seemed that as the season went on they were getting all out of sorts. They weren't the same team as they were last season. Maybe there was less grit, maybe Torts finally wore out his welcome.....
By the time the playoffs rolled around they were a circus in some aspects. They definitely have the talent to be back next season.

And I think that will be the case here. And he will have a better partner to make up for some of that, be it Coburn, or Grossmann.

i understand that but you're paying him #1/#2 minutes.
additionally, isn't he over 35? so even if he retires or something his cap hit remains on the books?
maybe someone will send giroux an offer sheet worth 8.5M a season |

He averaged 20:17 of icetime in the playoffs. Where his icetime was down, was at ES.

Yes at ES he was getting his time cut. He was the lead point on the pp and he is still very effective on the PP. |

i actually thought that after the trade deadline, the team was getting back on course. i believe that statistically we were the hottest team in the NHL going into the playoffs along with the capitals. a couple key injuries to players that would've really matched up well against the bruins really hurt us, but i doubt we would've gotten past them anyway. bruins are hella good and the rangers this year definitely lacked an element that made them so successful this year. maybe it was losing prust or maybe it was the roster turnover in a shortened season with no camp or maybe they just tuned out torts. |

Wow. You really want to do this?
Braydon Coburn and Nicklas Grossmann both missed substantial amounts of time. If the Flyers only gave up two more goals than the Islanders, do the math -- assuming good health, what do you think is going to happen next year?
Seriously -- the Islanders made the playoffs last year. Good for them. But let's not kid ourselves: The Flyers didn't even play well last year...and still only gave up two more goals than the Isles?
Maybe you should be more worried about your squad than you think. |

Speak for youself. I am fine with it. If 4 years at 5.5 is the cost it takes to keep schenn and couts... fine. - youarewrong
Basically it will be like the last 3 years of Timonen and next year of him. Slightly lesser skilled in some areas. Slightly more in others for less money. And while Kimmo has been a number 1 or 1A in his career, Streit is more of a no. 2 or 3. But as much as top d men are going for, I will take it. |
