I still amazed at the number of folks on Twitter surprised/pissed at the Streit contract.
It's almost exactly what I expected it was going to be. |

What other option would you go with? - Hextall271
- Young reclamation (McBain),
- CBO/salary-shared trade/salary-dumped player from another team (Liles, Ballard),
- prospect for prospect/youth for youth trade (Rundblad, Erixon, Stone, Blum).
The goal would have been to replace some of what we lost in Carle, while saving some cap space to bring in the true #1, two-way, Pronger replacement when he becomes available in the future (Phaneuf, Letang, Bouwmeester).
It's all kind of moot now, though. Whatever space would have opened up with Kimmo's retirement has now gone straight to a 36-year old Streit. |

Kings G Jonathan Bernier is switching agents to Pat Brisson. Among Brisson's clients are Mark Streit, who just signed with Philly, and...
Claude Giroux, who is working on an extension there. Get ready for some Flyers rumours with Bernier. - BingoLady
Dear God.. If they trade Read and a 2nd for Bernier, I won't be happy. |

The Flyers are in trouble next offseason with their restricted free agents. Sure they clear 10 mil with Timo and Mez off the books but losing Timo hurts an already poopty defense |

That, and the fact that the Flyers really need to move past the "guy has one bad season, we have to trade him immediately."
These guys are human. They get hurt. Sometimes, they're going to play very well. Sometimes they won't. But Braydon Coburn, to me, earned one bad season -- he's never been a real problem on the back end before, and at his age, there's every reason to expect either his normal season or, if the Flyers are lucky, a really strong bounceback season. - AllInForFlyers
Isn't he the longest tenured Flyer at this point? I like Coburn. He had a bad year, but has been fairly steady most of his time here. |

Matt Read, too. He's got to be Upshall'd/Umberger'd for sure now, barring some cost-saving miracle out of left field.

The one thing I will say, is if that kind of player ever game along (a true #1), I do have faith in them to clear away money to bring that guy in.
When they seem to really target a player, generally they do everything possible to get him. |

Im looking to trade Mezy now. He was good for us, but too many injuries, and a 4M cap hit. |

Very possible he's moved to address the goaltending, rather than a straight cost cutting move, a la Upshall and Umberger. |

I would, as well...It would have been nice if he could have started the year with the Flyers, been somewhat healthy and been traded for a decent pick, but unless Grossmann's still hurt, I see him as a casualty |

Well, you could always try to stuff Weber in a bag, smuggle him out os Nashville and throw a Flyers jersey over him, but i'm not sure it would work. - youarewrong
THANK YOU! I'm been suggesting this since the offer sheet failed. It's fool proof. You just need to find about 9 brave souls willing to give their lives to subdue him. |

Dmen going at a high price right now, sure we could get like a 3rd or 4th for him *shrug*
he's still a #3-4 dman when healthy. with the UFA crop so (frank)ing thin, someone would give us a pick or a medium/low prospect for him im sure
Of course im wishing he'd get packaged up along with Cousins/Laughton+ 11th for a dman like Edler or Yandle, but thats just wishful thinking |

I agree.. I am not saying this is perfect, but I still stand by my comments it's better than losing Cooter Schenn or the 1st pick.. Also, Homer was prob not gonna trade next year's 1st because the draft is here... People forget.. Homer quite possibly would have traded for a stud dman like Shattenkirk or someone like that, but maybe they are not available except for a king's ransom. He prob doesn't want to gut the forward corps unless it was for a Doughty, Weber or someone of that stature that are not available. |

Looking at it from a point of view that is another team, and not from a Flyer fan perspective.
Would you really want to bring in a walking band-aid for that cap hit? |

Just did a quick compilation of the Flyers off Season Cap space. I included Streit's rumored deal, and a CBO on Briere and Bryzgalov. That would put them at $58,956,985. Now that could go up some, because some players are going to get Q offers. And when that happens, that total goes up. But that won't be a lot. Then it could go up more when the re-sign guys such as Gustafsson
With the Off Season 10% exemption and a 64.3M Cap, that equals $70,730,000. That gives them $11,773,015 of Off Season Cap space to work with.
Now this can be confusing because the Off Season exemption goes away, and players such as Couturier and B Schenn will count for a lot more on the opening Day Cap then they do during the off season, because of the two way rules. For instance the Flyers saved $2,255,000 on Schenn alone for not meeting his bonuses. And the saved $450,000 on the Cap for Couturier. So they don't have as much Cap space as appears.
Now they have other options such as trading a Meszaros and signing a cheaper option. But this tells me the Flyers will be players this off season. Who knows what, but they have the space.
And these totals re for the Off Season, which begins July 5th.
And a disclaimer. This assumes the Off Season Cap accounting rules are the same. I haven't heard of anything new in the new CBA as far as that is concerned. |

Somebody's gotta replace Read for 2013-14, though... 40-50pts at $900k? |

Maybe they sign a vet reclamation project, who is more of a tradition 3rd liner than Read, who really should be a 2nd line winger. |

I dont know. I personally think a lot of the d-men on this team are overrated.
Its like the whole thing that Coburn could get you a 1st round pick. Personally, I think there is a rats ass chance that would ever happen. |

Truthfully? They're probably about the same, as far as value is concerned.
Carle's better in his own end, though his mistakes are sometimes glaring.
Streit's got a better shot and is better offensively...we probably need Streit's best attributes more at this point in time than we did Carle's, if that makes sense. - AllInForFlyers
I think Streit is definitely better offensively on the PP. But not at ES. They are pretty equal there, if not an edge to Carle. Many don't realize it, but Carle is one of the top point producers among defenseman at ES in the entire NHL.
