Dear God.. If they trade Read and a 2nd for Bernier, I won't be happy. - Hextall271
Even up. I'd be bummed if I was Mason though. This guy is clearly coming in to take his job like Bob did. |

Somebody's gotta replace Read for 2013-14, though... 40-50pts at $900k? - Tomahawk
One of the young kids need to step up like Read did in his rookie year. It certainly isn't a given, but not an impossibility either. Also, allow Lauridson to continue to get a ton of minutes in the AHL to continue to gain experience and eventually be the replacement for Grossmann and a significant cap savings. Gotta be able to plug and play guys. |

I dont know. I personally think a lot of the d-men on this team are overrated.
Its like the whole thing that Coburn could get you a 1st round pick. Personally, I think there is a rats ass chance that would ever happen. - flyer_nutter
not interested in trading Coburn. really hope homer doesnt.
still would like to know what the asking price for edler/yandle/shats is. Homer should be very willing to trade that #11 pick++ for one of those 3. |

Douglas Murray just got 2 second rounders at the TDL, and he's horrible. Coburn's issue is that he isn't a guy who can anchor a pair. But he can play 20-24 minutes a night with a good partner. Murray's a 6th defenseman with grit. |

- Young reclamation (McBain),
- CBO/salary-shared trade/salary-dumped player from another team (Liles, Ballard),
- prospect for prospect/youth for youth trade (Rundblad, Erixon, Stone, Blum).
The goal would have been to replace some of what we lost in Carle, while saving some cap space to bring in the true #1, two-way, Pronger replacement when he becomes available in the future (Phaneuf, Letang, Bouwmeester).
It's all kind of moot now, though. Whatever space would have opened up with Kimmo's retirement has now gone straight to a 36-year old Streit. - Tomahawk
Liles or Ballard would have been awful choices.

Just did a quick compilation of the Flyers off Season Cap space. I included Streit's rumored deal, and a CBO on Briere and Bryzgalov. That would put them at $58,956,985. Now that could go up some, because some players are going to get Q offers. And when that happens, that total goes up. But that won't be a lot. Then it could go up more when the re-sign guys such as Gustafsson
With the Off Season 10% exemption and a 64.3M Cap, that equals $70,730,000. That gives them $11,773,015 of Off Season Cap space to work with.
Now this can be confusing because the Off Season exemption goes away, and players such as Couturier and B Schenn will count for a lot more on the opening Day Cap then they do during the off season, because of the two way rules. For instance the Flyers saved $2,255,000 on Schenn alone for not meeting his bonuses. And the saved $450,000 on the Cap for Couturier. So they don't have as much Cap space as appears.
Now they have other options such as trading a Meszaros and signing a cheaper option. But this tells me the Flyers will be players this off season. Who knows what, but they have the space.
And these totals re for the Off Season, which begins July 5th.
And a disclaimer. This assumes the Off Season Cap accounting rules are the same. I haven't heard of anything new in the new CBA as far as that is concerned. - MJL

Matt Read, too. He's got to be Upshall'd/Umberger'd for sure now, barring some cost-saving miracle out of left field.
Action -> Consequence. - Tomahawk
Hard to make that statement when you have no idea what the Cap is going to be after next Season. Nor do you know what moves are going to be made in the mean time. That's an overreaction.

I'm not excited about ditching Read's versatility. If we're buying everyone out, don't we have the cap to sign a ufa backup and keep Read? |

Maybe they sign a vet reclamation project, who is more of a tradition 3rd liner than Read, who really should be a 2nd line winger. - Jsaquella
Or greatly accelerate the development of guys like Straka/Cousins, or hope Laughton/Raffl hit the ground running.
Either way, it's the same old story. Rush in with checkbook in hand, inevitable short and long-term fallout occurs, buyer's remorse settles in.
How big of a joke is it that they can't even announce the Streit deal until they've swept evidence of past bouts of UFA hysteria under the CBO rug? |

I'm thrilled Mason showed great promise in 7 games, but he was pretty awful for many years. I don't have a problem if they bring in Bernier and let the best man win. If both guys play great, certainly the "loser" of the competition will be in high demand throughout the NHL. Very good goalies below the age of 30 are pretty valuable. I wouldn't worry about Mason's psyche. |

Love to trade Coburn, so over rated its uncanny. He is a fine 2nd pair guy but when he is called upon to step up he just crumbles. I also wouldnt trade that 11 pick for one of those guys because of cap problems...this is where scouting and understanding whats out there really helps...yandle shats edler are all cap hits on a team that cant afford to take to may of them....if they could get a pullock i could live with that |

Part of the need there is the artificial dropping of the cap. Amazingly enough, they still calculate the cap the same way and if revenue grows like it was prior to the last lockout, the cap will rise fairly quickly.
Let's face it, as long as Snider's not six feet under and driving the car, they're going to spend to and above the cap.
I just wish they'd stop being so reactive. |

I think Streit is definitely better offensively on the PP. But not at ES. They are pretty equal there, if not an edge to Carle. Many don't realize it, but Carle is one of the top point producers among defenseman at ES in the entire NHL. - MJL
If Carle had a shot that was a little harder than a marshmellow puff, I'd be fine with the contract he got. |

I just want a true competition. I don't want them to bring in a guy who "expects" to be the starter regardless of competition. But I have no problem if he expects to be the starter if he earns it.

Certainly not, but in general I think there are pieces in the minors the Flyers can utilize to replace players on the big club both at the forward and defensive position. |

It would be pretty much the same with any top team who acquired a Free Agent before the UFA period that is a team that spends to the Cap. You completely over dramatize the Flyers Cap situation. |

That's really the angle I was worried about. He had a stellar rookie campaign then tanked. Gets beat out by Bob and then comes here and plays solid. Don't know why I am worried. I just don't want to hurt his mojo. |

My main concern with Mason is the work ethic. He's said all the right things, but rumor has it, he didn't always put in the time and effort in Columbus. Of course, communication seemed to be a major issue with Mason & the Jackets coaches, and he certainly worked well with Jeff Reese.
In fact, Reese is the biggest reason I'm excited to see what Mason can do. |

I agree. ... On one hand, I love the fact that I live in a hockey market where they ownership truly does try to win and pumps in as much as they can to make it happen and I dont think anyone can take that away from Snider, but I wish they would formulate a plan and stick to it even if you have to take a little step back before you take a big step forward |

If/when a true #1 defenseman becomes available (Bouwmeester??? really???) the Flyers will make whatever moves are necessary to acquire him. And yes, that includes trading guys named Couturier, Schenn, Simmonds, etc. |
