Nature of the business. When the Flyers were trying to sneak Randy Freakin' Jones through recall waivers a few years because they were racked with injuries on the blueline, did ol' pal Lombardi do Homer a favor or did he claim Jones for LA, leaving the Flyers with half of Jones' cap hit?

and the flyers gave a freshly canned Lombardi a job back in the day...

yeah. oh well, every GM has draft errors. its the one aspect of the job i am a little more forgiving about as far as errors go.

i loathe subban, but the kid has talent to spare. way too early to lean one way or another on stolarz i guess.

but yeah, all those deadline deals dont seem so great now. the pens really have nothing draft wise, although they could make a splash when letang forces their hand

It took a load of balls for Shero to make them, but often times, the "winner" of the TDL isn't the winner of the Cup. Real risk of messing up chemistry and honestly, I felt the only addition the Pens used right was Morrow.

I still think LA trades him before it gets to that point. If he is as coveted as we're led to believe, I'm sure they can hammer out a trade at the draft, before FA even starts
- Jsaquella

I agree. And I'd offer something north of a 2014 2nd round pick. But if I'm trading Read, I'd want a bigger deal (Read-plus for Bernier-plus).

BTW, as I see it, Tim's suggestion that Lombardi will demand Couturier for Bernier would prompt an immediate response of: "That's your idea of a realistic deal right now when you're dealing from the position of weakness here? How about this arrangement instead, Dean? How about you match our (2nd-round compensation) offer sheet to Bernier first and then you can match our offer sheet to Voynov if you don't have him extended by then? 'Cause we're gonna make sure we've got the cap space to do that if need be."

yeah, i wouldve liked it a hell of a lot more if it was one pick instead of two, but for all his limitations, he did have some net clearing presence, which is something the team sorely lacked.

Two offer sheets to the same team. Unlikely, but still tremendous.

Yes, because the Kings are in a lose-lose situation if it even comes to an offer sheet for Bernier at $3.3 million. LA currently hast just 14 players signed to contracts for next season with $11.8 million of open cap space under the ceiling. They have to re-sign Voynov this off-season.

If a team offer-sheets Bernier for a $3.36 million cap hit and the Kings match, LA would have $9.1 million of cap space tied up next year between Quick and Bernier alone (and would be prohibited from trading Bernier for a full year).

If LA declines to match at a $3.36 million, all they get is a 2014 second-round pick as compensation.

- bmeltzer

The Flyers are going to be facing something similar in 2014... susceptible to losing core players for 2nd-round picks due to lack of cap competence and general foresight.

yeah. at the time i guess it was just conceded as the cup team losing a role player to free agency, oh well happens every year. no one could have imagined how vital he would be. i wonder how much he has left in the tank, although im sure he wants to stay put in LA

I know why he shaved the beard into the Lemmy/early 90s James Hetfield/late 1970s Garry Maddox look. The chin part of his beard is all gray now while the mustache and the rest of the beard is still dark (mine does that now too).

If they buy out Bryz and Briere, and don't re-sign Timonen & Meszaros, they'll have around $24.5mm, even taking Streit into account

Yes, but one they are generally pretty good at doing is getting players locked up before they hit FA status. There is also a good chance the cap ceiling in 2014-15 jumps up again to around $70 million after the one-year rollback.
