The Flyers are going to be facing something similar in 2014... susceptible to losing core players for 2nd-round picks due to lack of cap competence and general foresight.
- Tomahawk

Nope, I dont think they will be.

Not saying they'll do it, of course, or that it's even realistic. But it's just as unrealistic to think Lombardi would ask for -- and get -- Couturier as his return on Bernier in order to pre-empt an offer sheet from the Flyers or another team.

Assuming no additions/re-ups happen between now and then?
- Tomahawk

Obviously there will be additions between then and now, but I think that they realize that they need to get Giroux done(and are already working on that) and will almost certainly start talking to the agents for Schenn & Couturier before the season ends.

If they buy out Bryz and Briere, and don't re-sign Timonen & Meszaros, they'll have around $24.5mm, even taking Streit into account
- Jsaquella

yeah, i think theyll be fine. they will have space to lock up the guys they identify as the important core. might not have the money left over for that big splash that a lot of people want for some reason. although you guys are probably better off if thats the case. its getting harder and harder to have free agent signings be positive things anymore

I believe either Alt or Lauridson will crack the top 6 in '14-15, easing the cap strain on the third pairing.

yea you're right. you'll prob lose one or 2 of them for a couple 1sts, a 2nd, and a 3rd like giroux when he signs his 8 year $67 million offer sheet from the rangers

Yes, but one they are generally pretty good at doing is getting players locked up before they hit FA status. There is also a good chance the cap ceiling in 2014-15 jumps up again to around $70 million after the one-year rollback.
- bmeltzer

Why is the cap jumping everywhere? What dictates where the cap goes?

It's hockey-related revenue driven and dictated by the CBA's percentage of HRR that gets spent on salaries. Even with the tweaks that have taken place and the floor/ceiling being lowered for the 2013-14 season, it sounds as of now as if the very early prognostications for the 2014-15 cap ceiling are that it will be back in the neighborhood of $69 to $70M (i.e., right back where it was in 2012-13). That could change, of course.

I know why he shaved the beard into the Lemmy/early 90s James Hetfield/late 1970s Garry Maddox look. The chin part of his beard is all gray now while the mustache and the rest of the beard is still dark (mine does that now too).
- bmeltzer

mine has been that for a long time. gotta' live with it. dont' like the shaved chin.

I don't believe Logan Couture's new extension will be for max 8 years. Hearing more like 5 or 6 years.

I'd imagine this could impact Giroux's next contract - will be interesting to see.

I agree. And I'd offer something north of a 2014 2nd round pick. But if I'm trading Read, I'd want a bigger deal (Read-plus for Bernier-plus).

BTW, as I see it, Tim's suggestion that Lombardi will demand Couturier for Bernier would prompt an immediate response of: "That's your idea of a realistic deal right now when you're dealing from the position of weakness here? How about this arrangement instead, Dean? How about you match our (2nd-round compensation) offer sheet to Bernier first and then you can match our offer sheet to Voynov if you don't have him extended by then? 'Cause we're gonna make sure we've got the cap space to do that if need be."

- bmeltzer

Hahaha I just posted on tims blog if I'm trading coots to la I would do coots + this years 2nd round pick and mez for bernier and voynov. Think that fair for both teams

i've had a perma-shadow for something like 10 years now. skin is too sensitive for clean shaving...even once a week. i start getting wolfy in about 7-10 days. buzz again. lather. rinse. repeat.

Cool, maybe then we could cash in some new-found cap space on a big-name UFA. As of this moment (doubt many of these guys will actually reach the market, but who knows, we're still a year away) includes names like Phaneuf, Gaborik, Vanek, Marleau, Thornton, Lunqvuist, JBo, Statsny, Kessel, Miller, both Sedins, and a ton of other high-end guys. Most will get extensions, but we can always hope.

ah yeah well.... tell you what. send mcdonaugh over to the pens for basically anything on the roster outside of 87 and 71, and the pens will buy out richards for you

and out of that list, how many of them would you really want for the money that their name status is going to get them?

Depending on the cap-space we have, many of them. Depending on how the market looks then, we could potentially add that #1 dman we've been lacking for so long in a blockbuster signing.

haha im sure that list is a long one. but thats kind of my point though, is that he probably is going to be one of the bigger fish out there. free agency is just rough anymore
