I think if Bryzgalov is not bought out later this month, I think it means that the Flyers are open to keeping him long term. - MJL
I think the buyout window is relatively short...
Starting 48 hours after the SCF and ending 2 weeks later. I think. |

Michael Leighton could win the Vezina behind a Tippett-coached team. - Tomahawk
Not true, to compare Leighton to Smith is absurd. Smith is a workhorse that wins games all on his own. My only concern with him is staying 100% healthy. He is a fierce competitor and sometimes plays a little wreckless as he is physically ready for any Milan Lucic types. Would love to see him in Philly. All those shutouts, well check them out and many were in the 40 save or more category. |

If I were actually hoping for Flyer success but I'm not, this would be my goalie wishlist for what's out there:
1) Luongo (different contract)
2) Bernier ( up in the air as far as trade cost goes)
3) Miller ( same with this guy)
4) Backstrom
5) Halak
6) Khubodin
7) Emery
8) Svedberg
9) Thomas |

I think it means he has one more year to prove himself but I will bet he is gone either this year or next year for sure.
Let's face it the guy is bad mouthing Philly in Russia and does not want to play here anymore but he is in the drivers seat. Worst signing ever. - flyerdude17
It's either a CBO this year, or next. They can't risk going any farther than 2014 w/ that contract on the books w/ the cap recapture penalties.
I believe the decision hinges more on what options they have to replace him via trade/UFA/CBO UFA/OS/etc. If they have something solid lined up this summer, they'll do it now. If things aren't looking so hot, they might delay it until next summer. |

I can't see keeping Bryz under any circumstance. The contract is an albatross. His performance against the dollars is weak. He is a distraction to the team. If we don't use the CBO and he gets injured we are hosed. Just too many reasons not to keep him. Same for Danny. I loved him on the team for a long time and still do from some aspects. But his lack of regular season performance. His age. His defensive liability. And his cap hit just don't outweigh the good. These CBO's are like golden do over tickets to these GMs. Every team gets a chance to get rid of their bad contracts. No way anyone should not take advantage of them. - section32
Exactly, could not have said it better myself. Distraction to the team is a huge factor! |

Couturier for Russell - Antilles
I think we'd have to include the obligatory 2nd rounder to land this guy:

He's still signed for a year. You'd have to trade for him and hope to resign him. I'm not big on Halak or his next contract terms. |

Meh. Noel Fielding would perform nearly as well, and he'd probably only cost us a 4th. |

I am sorry but I did read it somewhere. Apparently he is telling russian newspapers that Philly fans are the worst fans ever. I have been looking for it but can not find it. I assure you it was in the news whether it is true or not. If I find it I will send you a link to it. |

In other words, "...later this month" as he said.
Per capgeek "In 2013, the buyout period begins 48 hours after the Stanley Cup Final ends and concludes on July 4 at 5 p.m." ( http://www.capgeek.com/new-cba/) |

Luongo will get about the same cap hit on his new contract as the one he will be bought out from. Everyone ok with that? |

Buyout bryz now and this time next year the former vezina finalist finally wins his vezina trophy.... Then queue up us flyers fans complaining about trading away bryz too soon. I can see it happening. |

Bill Meltzer: Meltzer's Musings: Emery and Other Goalie Options - bmeltzer
Ray Emery for me is my number one choice. He'll come at a decent price, He's still at a decent age and I'm not in favour of handing Steve Mason the number one job. In my opinion he still has to earn it. Should Steve Mason not be able to handle the pressure that comes with playing in Philadelphia, Ray Emery has already been here and knows what to expect. I'm not convinced that Ray Emery can't still be a number 1 goaltender in the NHL.
As for Tim Thomas, it's impossible to tell if he's washed up. His Cup Win, Conn Smyth Win and Vezina Trophy's are still pretty recent. He's slightly up there in age but he might make a pretty good mentor. Aside from age, he's one year removed from the NHL. His reasoning for time off at this stage of his career is a little strange to me.
What both these 2 players have in common is they both fight for their crease. They both have bite. They both remind me of Hextall in this sense. I want my goalie to be as mentally strong as he can be physically. |
