so its good for the team that you let your captain walk?

Great job!

- lileapers

we tried to keep him but like his defense, our stick check didn't keep him away from cashing in.

Weren't you guys trying to sign him to a three year deal 2 weeks ago?

- hereticpride

Snow offered him 3 years at near $4.6, which most of us felt was too much. Thankfully he declined the offer. Even more fortunately, a perennial division contender made an awful financial transaction to lock him up all to improve the one facet of their game that was already good while weakening the one that needes most help

Doesn't this remind you of someone else that many of us wanted to remain an Islander -- for the right price? Jason Blake wanted a five year deal and a big payday for his 40 goal season -- his first and last 40-goal season. His agent managed to get it -- out of the Leafs.

No one wanted Blake to remain an Islander.

that and what he turned down from Snow (3 years, 4.75/year) was way more than most of us feel he was worth.

I was all for trading Streit at the deadline, and give Donovan the early experience regardless of playoffs or not.....

Streit fills a huge need as a defenseman that can move the puck and QB the 2nd PP. That was an area that needed the most help, even outside of a goaltender IMO and most knowledgeable Flyers fans understand that.

Its not that Streit isn't still capable of playing in the NHL, it's just a VERY risky contract. 35+, injured recently, on the decline and north of $5 mill for 4 years..

Good point. That is a strike against Snow AND DEE. DP was extended in September 06. Snow was hired in July 06.
- cranktheradio

No Wang (the Owner) signed DP to that contract, it was in pace before Snow became GM. It may have been signed on his watch, but it wasnt his contract.

Oh no doubt, especially the over 35 part. But look at what Gonchar got. Streit would have gotten 4 years and more money in FA. Not saying he deserves it, but that's what would have happened. But to say that it weakens us as a team is silly, and once one of Coburn/Meszy/Grossman are moved, he brings a much needed element to our back end.

He will be good for you guys on the PP, just make sure he plays the 5th/6th d-man, instead of top 4.... Liability on D

Whats the situation with Pronger?

I think he'd look good with Coburn or Grossman, both defensive minded. Most preferably Coburn, because he is probably our best defensive skater, which I've heard is the only knock on Streits offensive game. Is 5.25 a lot for 4 years? Hell yes, on an over 35 contract it is. But it fills a huge need on the PP and 5 on 5

Does anyone have any idea of what Hamonic's new contract may look like? I would love a long term deal, but I seem to hear a large discrepancy in money when talking to other islander fans.

Pronger is 99.9% done and will fade away on LTIR for the duration of his contract. Which doesn't hurt the Flyers except during the offseason, where LTIR doesn't matter. So essentially Prongers contract takes up the 10% you are allowed to go over during the offseason. Only 1 of those 3 will be moved, and most likely Meszy.

It'll likely be on paper, and even more likely with words. Chances are that the paper will be white or off-white, and the words will be in black, and written in English...

The guy is 35, a crappy defenseman and is now making 5.4 million per year. I'm not sure you watched a single Islanders game this year based on your comment. He isn't good. Philly is a joke signing him for that much.

As a Oiler fan, we were talking a lot about Mark Streit as a UFA target, but that new contract is just nuts for a 35 year old player at the tail end of his career. I think your GM made a very smart choice here, and at least got something back.

I now have to nominate Holmgren as the worse GM in the league. Nothing but one stupid big money contract after another, and now he will have to use both salary buyouts (more than likely) just to get under the cap space.

Good luck next season guys

He is in the discussion for being the worst. He is right there with the guys in Calgary, Vancouver and the Rags.
