Exactly -- Streit will play fewer minutes, and protected minutes, in PHI.
Everybody knows the contract's awful. But the Islanders were offering him three years, $5 million per. Maybe they would've jumped off a bridge if he had taken it, but the fact is they offered it.
They're glad he's gone. Fine. But it baffles me how all of a sudden, Ryan Strome and Nino Neiderreiter became better NHL players overnight because of Mark Streit's departure. - AllInForFlyers
I see what you mean. If the Isles org did offer him any type of contract, then they obviously thought he was valuable to some extent. I don't believe it was because he's a good guy. |

I love it..living in the Philly area I hear this crap all the time. It's this goldfish bowl mentality that the Flyers will pull it together and storm through the rest of the league like Sherman through Georgia. No one considers that perhaps the end of Pronger essentially meant the end of this era and major recontstructing needs to be done. People in Philly were proclaiming Giroux as the best player in the world after Laviolette waxed poeticially to get under Crosby's skin. Suddenly Jagr leaves and Giroux looks just a little less impressive. Look, I still think the Flyers are a good team because they have a few guys who can perform in key situations, but I'm pretty damn certain they have a LOT of financial issues facing them and a goalie who has a far too weak mentality to play in Negadelphia.
Meanwhile the Isles are considered to have one of the deepest talent pools in the entire league and just served notice to the league that they can skate with anyone all while moving into one of the most marketable buildings in sports and a boatload of available cap space. So yes, I think we're in a better position (presently) than you guys.

The Flyers are awful in their own zone...yet gave up just two more goals than the Islanders last season. So what are the Islanders, then? - AllInForFlyers
Flyers missed the playoffs, are going to have to buyout one of their top players in Briere, possibly also their goaltender who's making more money than a small country and have an agreement to sign Streit to another stupid contract immediately afterwards.
Throwing money at a problem isn't going to work in this situation. Streit was brutal defensively finishing minus 14 on the Isles and playing in the bottom pairing for the last month of the season and playoffs, hasn't played the body in two years and stick checks weakly at opposing forwards, is 35 and the Flyers lock him up for 4 more years at a silly number.
Isles made the playoffs, are a goalie, a legit winger for JT and a top four defenseman away from making some serious noise and have a ton of prospects coming, with plenty of cap space to sign them.
I'll take the Isles future, I'd rather watch my team become a contending franchise even if it takes 2-3 more years, than watch them throw darts at UFA's in the hopes of fixing a major leak with bubblegum.

As a Oiler fan, we were talking a lot about Mark Streit as a UFA target, but that new contract is just nuts for a 35 year old player at the tail end of his career. I think your GM made a very smart choice here, and at least got something back.
I now have to nominate Holmgren as the worse GM in the league. Nothing but one stupid big money contract after another, and now he will have to use both salary buyouts (more than likely) just to get under the cap space.
Good luck next season guys - shvmr
Bahahahah this coming from an Oiler fan how many number one picks do you guys need to get to the playoffs? Homer is no genius but he does what he can to improve the team. Streit isnt the best fix but it beats trading good assets for a good d-man. |

We would've all been lamenting if he accepted that contract and why do I think some of you would've been busting our balls about it? Pretty funny when you think about it. |

It does to me. Why in God's name would the Isles have offered him a contract that was at least in the same ball park if he is as terrible as you all say? Woudl Snow have said, oh you accepted it? Um yeah, that wasn't a real offer, that was a token gesture because you are a nice guy LOL |

So what you are saying is that Snow is a horrible GM because he can't see what is obvious to the fans? I wouldn't have made fun had he re signed.. if he's a puck moving D and your captain, would have made sense. |

You have to understand that to Wang, loyalty is a HUGE thing. It's why he gave Yashin and DP the type of deals they got. The Isles have a huge appreciation for Streit and his contributions to the community. He's been a helluva good guy and played his role here. We offered 3 years @ $4.7 mil and he turned it down. I have no doubt we offered more than we felt he was really worth because we had the space and were going to allow him to retire an Islander, but the moment he wanted more, we backed out.
The biggest issue to me is that I think there were MUCH better options out there that would have helped you in more prudent areas. You could have signed a guy like Marc Andre Bergeron to perform the same role at $1 million per season for 2 years, while addressing a much better #1 option. There are plenty of guys out there that would have helped you much more.

Hey, good luck in Brooklyn; it'll be nice to not have to hear all the excuses about why the Islanders haven't performed well over the last six seasons before this one.
We'll see what you do with it. You finished six points ahead of the Flyers last year in a 48-game season. That's a fact.
Let's see you do it again. If you're as good as you think you are, then you don't have a single thing to worry about.

I think he'd look good with Coburn or Grossman, both defensive minded. Most preferably Coburn, because he is probably our best defensive skater, which I've heard is the only knock on Streits offensive game. Is 5.25 a lot for 4 years? Hell yes, on an over 35 contract it is. But it fills a huge need on the PP and 5 on 5 - GirouxForTheShow

First off we offered him a year less at a million less per year. That's pretty significant for a 35 year old player whose play has declined. As far as the captain thing that all of you guys are harping on it's a forgone conclusion who are next captian is. Most Isles fans wanted Streit gone last year for his play and this reason. The guy is a great guy(it seems, I don't know him personally)and he played well for us for a season but it's a really bad contract but I wish him the best none the less. Good for him finding a team willing to pay him 5.25 mil a year for four years so he can play on the 2ndd pp unit and be their fourth defenseman. Guess you guys got breathing room to spend? |
