Perhaps, but look at the teams that have had success in the SC playoffs the past few years. They are all built on big, physical defenses who clog the lanes, block shots, retrieve pucks by winning one on one battles in the corners, and, most importantly, wear down the opposition over the course of a best of 7 series by checking them relentlessly. Now of course there is more than one way to skin a cat, but if you ask me the Flyers defense has struggled to do all of the above (which I think we can all agree is critical for a d corpse to do) since losing Pronger. Streit brings a lot to the table, but none of the above.

The Flyers, when healthy, do have big physical guys who can block shots, bang bodies, win battles and even make basic plays to get the puck out of the zone, but the forwards aren't back checking or supporting the puck enough to foster operation as a five man unit up the ice and in all zones, which negatively impacts the breakouts, transition game and offensive attack...a player like Streit can help mitigate that situation by closing the gap between the forwards and the d with his puck carrying out of the zone and skill with longer range in outlet passing...also, the Flyers don't have a D man beyond Timonen (who is near the end of his career) who can bring a consistent shot and good playmaking from the point, which can help them offensively 5 on 5 as well as the PP.

I'll fix that right now

So move Coburn + 11th OV + something for Ryan? Then move Read for Bernier. Then Couturier for a top-4 D. Is that the #Flyers plan?

Wouldn't have changed anything. What about that don't you get? They still would have targeted Bryzgalov, and they same deal would have been made. And you do not know for a fact that nobody else would have been interested in Bryzgalov. And bid against them to drive the price up even further. That is the whole purpose of acquiring a players rights ahead of time.

They don't have to do anything. They didn't have to trade for Pronger. Or trade Richards and Carter. Or trade for Streit. All choices. That is my point that you're missing.

- MJL

i'm not missing a thing. the fact that you're bringing discordant examples like pronger/richards/carter proves my point. so drop it. stick to CBA and systems issues.

The Flyers make a choice and then do what they have to, to get it done. Nothing discordant about it. It's how the Flyers operate. Right or wrong. They were not interested in anyone else. They were interested in Bryzgalov. And had zero interest in Vokoun. And labeling the contract a bad deal is real easy after the fact in hindsight. Sit in the chair and make the decision without the benefit of hindsight. If there is no Recapture rule, and the results were there that the Flyers expected. Then there is nothing wrong with the contract.

a lot of this is just getting discussions heated up of course, but i sense that this summer, homer's gonna look like a guy at the craps table w/ an underwater mortgage

Yea - another team would have signed him to something similar. Maybe they'd have a better defensive system, maybe he'd have less pressure. But someone would have if it wasn't Holmgren.

I'd rather Grossmann and the 11th for Ryan. Would love to see Ryan on a line with giroux and Hartsy though.

Yup, I know turnover will happen & it won't be moving to another team within the leagues.
