I don't know how they can manage to do it unless Letang takes a major discount - 5.5 ish. This is one of the best chips you have in the coming years that can add a high pick, a top prospect that can fortify your farm system's short comings (goalie and forward) and a young NHL player. I don't think Letang gets better either under this system. Just my opinion. - Oneonta Penguin
Seeing 5.5 million in cap space tied up by Letang would make me throw up a little every time I saw him on the ice...

Are we discussing Kristopher Letang here? Because I've watched him night in, night out for the past several years, and he's anything but good on the defensive side. Poor coverage of his check in his zone, a habit of looking for home-run passes that quite often end up on the sticks of the opposition (often in prime scoring position), and until recently, a tendency to miss the net SO bad that a breakout for the other team ensued.
Is it that Letang we're both talking about? - Kineada
I'm yet to hear something good about him coming from you
I know some of his problems. Yes. He makes me mad sometimes. Hell, Erik Karlsson does stupid stuff on the ice (defensively) but Ottawa fans can't complain about since he's their only franchise player on the roster.

Kineada, you gotta be kidding me if you're saying you wouldn't re-sign Letang @ $5.5M/year. |

JMO, Joe is posturing. He is a fool if he takes anyone else.
I agree, a pending free agent in Letang isn't bringing back the top overall pick. I don't see a destination in the top 10 that Letang would resign with. The team with the 11th pick is a different story. - Oneonta Penguin
Probably right about the posturing. It's just strange for a GM to make any kind of comment like that.
We all know Ray isn't helping the Flyers fix a glaring need. |

He's definitely half a mil better than Martin - Genev21
What's your metric?
Paul Martin was a plus 14 for the season, and personally had 23 points. So somewhere along the way he managed a -9 difference. Kris Letang was a marginally better plus 16, and personally had 38 points, for a -22 difference, or more than double what we can infer Martin lost solely based on personal production.
This doesn't speak volumes for Letang's defensive play over Martin. For a team that has two recent league Art Ross winners, which is more important...a defenseman who scores, or one that keeps the other team from scoring?
I get it. The average fan likes flashy, scoring players, be they on O or D. Letang fits that bill. I prefer my defensemen play defense first and foremost. |

Talent level offensively is off the charts he is prone to make bad decisions but he's still growing as a player and is going to get better defensively. He's gotten better every year and I think you are overreacting to his poor playoffs. I am for trading letang but if you sign him for 5.5-6.5 mil you do it. You don't come across people with his type of skill set very often a very unique player who's only going to get better. Honestly getting a step slower would probably help letang because he would be forced to pay more attention to positioning.

If this report is true, Sakic has already said the Av's aren't taking Jones.
Regardless, an unsigned Letang is not bringing back the #1 pick. Letang is not going to sign a long term deal with an unattractive team/market. Even though Letang is not an UFA, his situation is very much like an UFA. The acquiring team will have to be damn certain he'll sign a long term deal with them, if not, the return for Letang is really going to disappoint some people around here.
I still think there's only 10 or less teams that are legit destinations. Unfortunately a couple are in our division. - madmike71
COL is an attractive market, with a young team on the upswing where Letang is very much needed. I think he would definitely consider signing there, esp if the offer is 7-7.5/8yrs and NMC. Letang signed was the assumption, otherwise, indeed the trade will be much different.

You weren't talking like that last year when Martin wasn't good. Get over it. Letang is a very good defenseman. Martin is good too. I hope both of them stay with us. Letang is no Mike Green, he's good defensively if put in a position to succeed. I don't like some of Bylsma's antics like giving him 3-4 different d-partners during the season. No consistency this way.

And it's not like he's an AHLer defensively. He had a rough year on this department but can be trusted IMO. He'll work on his deficiencies. If he stays, awesome. If not, give the best return (steal) possible. |

Colorado COULD BE a very attractive market. They have a good young history of sorts. They have a nice core with Landeskog, Duchesne, ROR, Parenteau, McGinn, Mitchell, maybe Johnson if he gets his head out of his ass. That said, after playing XXX years in Pittsburgh, I find it hard to believe Letang would resign with an organization that is one of the worst three in the NHL and will need four or five years before they challenge for the prize.

No, he isn't an AHL Dman. However, someone needs to get through his head that he isn't a forward. He plays hockey more so as a forward than a Dman. Sorry, people blast MAF for his two consecutive poopty play-off years, but you seem to give Letang a pass on his. He was terrible last year versus Philly and was bad this year.

Hell no. For the right price, Letang is a keeper.
I could get used to it for 6-8 more years

hell, if he took 5.5, id welcome him back with open arms, regardless of his mental shortcomings. no way that happens though |

Pittsburgh isn't known as a good defensive team and it could be argued that Letang was actually the third Dman at best this year.
