I get the GMs that have to overpay to get free agents to come play for them (Edmonton, Calgary, maybe Dallas ... you get the names), but its the same GMs that throw everything out of whack and its not the one's that have to overpay.
We will have another work stoppage down the road. Prepare yourself for it now. Actions thus far suggest it. Nothing has really changed. - Oneonta Penguin
to be fair, if we are going to indict a guy like holmgren on something like this, you need to look a big further up the ladder as well at a guy like snider. holmgren writes these crazy checks because he can. granted, i would never bemoan an owner for wanting to win at the expense of whatever cost, but still. if the only limitation a GM has to restrict himself is the cap, it is in his best interest to spend up to it |

And we get to look forward to the next handful of years of reading press releases about record breaking revenue....
Only to hear the teams crying poor in advance of the next lockout. - rival22
The split on HRR is 50/50 now. There really shouldn't be a problem moving forward. The 43/57 split was never going to work. |

All great points. But I'd rather have him locked up with the CSP prob going up After this year - ChrisMS
Reading this somehow CPZ came to mind |

I probably feel the same about Coots as you, but enough with Yandle.
The Streit signing was ok, but it was just one move of many to happen.
I'm also sick of the goalie thing. Is every goalie that plays for the Bruins awesome, or does it have something to do w/ a guy like Chara? Five years ago, did anyone think Crawford was all that? - Daman
This is one thing I don't get. The infactuation level with Coots as such by fans to NOT want him moved in a potential deal for someone you need more in Yandle. To me, Coots projects as a solid two-way third line player. I don't see a 20-goal scorer in him.
As far as Crawford goes, I still don't think he is all that. Lets see what he does next year. If he duplicates this season, then I might believe in him. To me, he is Jeff Locke of the Pirates. I'm awaiting for him to implode at any moment. Of course, I hope Locke doesn't, but he is pitching over his head - IMO

it's the same old poop under a new collective bargaining agreement. I suggest next time when we have a stoppage, players shut up and don't resist. Why? Because they will get the money regardless and then some. - Oneonta Penguin
Being sincere for a moment, I wish I had any sort of answer to the collective bargaining issues between the players and the league. But the bitter political landscape and the brinksmanship we've been seeing inspire zero hope in me. |

Fair point. It makes me wonder if Snider is really a hockey guy - meaning someone who knows the game. My son laughed when he saw Streit's salary now and he is 10. If a 10-year old knows that is too much, then ...
If Snider was a hockey guy, he could have said NO.
Someone will argue supply and demand. The free agent class is terrible, so in order to get the best of the worst, you have to overpay. Again, it throws everything off. |

i unfortunately think you may be right, because i just for some reason see myself being a little disappointed with the return. but you never know. if they can somehow pull off a really good return, then maybe not.
maybe not being committed to him for an 8 year 60 plus million dollar contract to him may be a blessing in disguise. dont get me wrong, id love to retain him, but that salary is a lot for a primarily offensive defenseman who actually makes the powerplay worse - stayinthefnnet
That is the key... They have an immediate replacement to carry the offensive load, with some great potential pieces a year or two away.
With Bylsma's system, they don't necessarily need defensemen with high-end offensive skill. They need defensemen who can consistently quickly make a good first pass. This is where Letang will be missed... Not only is he good with the first pass, but if nothing is there he can skate the puck out. Once the puck gets to the offensive zone, his offensive contributions are somewhat easily replaced.
That being said, I don't think that he's worth a $7 mil cap hit, and if the return can shore up a couple of areas, or at the very least add some quality forward prospects, then I'd move him.
It will leave a hole, but you know Shero isn't going to go to camp with Despres and a question mark as his #3 & #4 defensemen. He will make other moves to shore it up. |

ill be honest, no i really dont think he is. but i mean, most owners really arent exactly prodigies at Xs and Os and personnel decisions. thats why they hire GMs in the first place. most owners that try to meddle in it directly in their respective sports tend to do just as much harm as good.
however, what snider likely lacks in hockey related IQ, he more than makes up for in passion for winning and his determination to do whatever he feels is necessary to put the best product on the ice.
yeah the bryz deal is atrocious, but at the time, for better or worse it is what he felt would put the flyers in the best position to win the cup. obviously im glad it kind of blew up on the launchpad, but i respect his ownership a hell of a lot more than the regime the phillies were subjected to for the longest time. |

It's an old video game thing. At this point, I'm mostly keeping it to bug your glorious moderator referee.

thanks. thats actually one of the things thats always bugged me about a lot of flyers fans around here. i dont think snider has been given enough credit as an owner. never once in my life, and im sure for decades before that, have the flyers ever not been doing everything they can as an organization to win. in todays world of sports, everything begins and ends with an owner who wants to win. its virtually impossible to succeed without it. despite a lack of much tangible cup success (thank god) the flyers have always had that, to the point where i think many fans take it for granted. |

I'm picking up what you're putting down, sir. In short: Snider giveth, Snider giveth away. I do appreciate his desire to win. I just wish he'd stick to loosening the purse strings and leave the work to his GM. |
