Depends what you consider core. We are buying out a top 6 forward and #1 goalie for cap reasons right now. - youarewrong
yeah, but i dont know. i guess that technically sounds like what would be core pieces, but they dont seem to be to me. its not as if they are producing on the ice and just need to go purely for cap reasons. to me, the core is your group of young guns that you see this team revolving around in the next 3 to 4 years. just because briere is paid like a core guy, and schenn isnt, doesnt change it for me.
not to sound like an Edmonton fan, who i swear lists everyone with a pulse as part of an untouchable core, you guys have Giroux, Coots, Schenn x2, Voracek, and Simmonds as what i would consider in that group. None of them should go for purely financial reasons. |

It was in another forum by a poster. I just wanted to verify they are crazy. - youarewrong
Fairly certain that this is hogwash.
Certainly no mention of it in the Buyout section of the CBA. |

True, but there is more to core then young players. No-one has scored more in the playoffs then Briere. And Bryzgalov is a former Vesina canidate. While they haven't had spectatular last 2 seasons, there is reason to believe they could bounce back, and likely will for another team.
IMO a core extends beyond young future guys. I think the core is what is integral for a team to win. In that way I would say Hartnell and Briere are as much a part of the core as Schenn and Couturier are currently. I would put those guys as "future core" players. While I doubt we lose "Future Core" players due to cap reasons, I can see us having to move current core players. In a few seasons it might become necessary to trade Hartnell much like the did Gagne 3 years ago. Who knows at this point, but yea...

He reference Piere LeBrun from a few weeks ago. I just asked for a link. Maybe he misunderstood. |

He was good on and off the ice for this team. It's the obvious and correct decision to buy him out.

Players who are core players now, are not neccessarily a core player 3 years from now. As we are seeing with Briere. It evolves. |

the way i am looking at it right now, is say the team was all being let go, except five or so ones of your choice. to me, guys like briere and hartnell, while good players (especially at the moment) dont make that list |

I think I pretty much said as much and also mentioned that core players 3 years from now aren't necessarly core players now.
The way Briere played in the playoff though I would find it hard to say he was not a core player. Also his leadership in the lockeroom. I would say Core isn't just about how many goals you scored. |

Exactly. I think the only "core" guy we've lost due to the cap was Umberger after his crazy Montreal playoff. But yeah, Briere/Hartnell were "core" guys when we acquired them, now they're just (or, were) very good supporting players. |

I guess were on the same page then. To summarize, Briere was a core player. He certainly isn't anymore. |

Hartnell is frustrating. He brings a lot of intangibles that are great and can even add some offense when he's on top of his game, but he's also prone to streaks of poor play and bone headed decisions.
Getting him on fire with jake and g would be a a huge plus for next year, so hopefully he can get back to his form from 2 years ago. |

He played well at the end of last year when he finally got healthy. One can only hope that carries over. |
