Nah, Holmgren can't be that smart. Desperation has always been part of his strategy. |

Has any other team announced any other players being amnestied? Seems more odd that they made this announcement than that they haven's said anything about Bryz. I think it's more a case of the Flyers having high regard for Briere and wanting to let him know so he has more time/opportunity to make other plans. |

Briere is officially being bought out. - bradleyc4
And my most vivid Danny memory will be him flipping the back of Miller's head after a playoff goal. Pure gold. |

Just a thought. The decrease in the net depth should allow for more/quicker wraparound attempts I would think. Post to post not exactly one of Bryz's strong suits. Some food for thought don't know what the new dimensions are. |

I dont know why, maybe because I saw this coming a long time ago, but I don't feel bad, or sad about Briere. I don't know what it is. I never liked the fact he is a streaky scorer, that took stupid penalities, his albatros contract, and didn't play defense. I didn't hate Briere, but I don't seem to be as in love with him as some other people on this site. I was much more sad to see Gagne go. |

I feel your apathy
He was an overrated and overpaid player on the ice. Off the ice he was wonderful, which doesn't do anything for me. I go to maybe a game a year, I'm not down there with kids, at the carnival, etc. I know he was great to fans. Glad we're moving on. |

Can't wait for the day the "net" is a holographic image in neon color like "tron" and sensors tell you when the puck crosses the goal-line. One day.

Game 7 2010 playoffs against Boston, Briere's goal makes it 3-3. He goes wrap around behind the net and roofs it. |

Actually he threw it out front from behind the net and banked it off the Bruins dman.

Everyone in the hockey universe knows that Briere is getting bought out but must it go down like this? Must it be huge media news before it happens? I'm sure many GMs around the league know who is getting bought out for their own clubs and they have managed to keep it to themselves... |

Some dope leaked it, left him hanging in the wind, kindest thing is make it official so there aren't uncomfortable silences or fake denials. |

Do you think that if they kept it "secret" there would be a trade for him?
That small chance left when he was injured at the trading deadline.
There is no option left, so announcing it makes no difference at this point.
Once they made a deal with Streit, they have to buy out Danny for cap space.
Unlike Bryz where there is still a choice, Briere was a done deal. |

I do wonder if there was any chance of trading Briere at all. We have yet to see him slow down when it matters, the playoffs. With two seasons remaining at low cost, wouldn't his cap hit change for another team? The money left looks very affordable and I find it hard to believe nobody would take a chance if Briere waved the no-moment. |

He probably wouldn't waive otherwise he could have very well been playing for Boston right now. |

Well, the guy was a popular player here, and it's nice that they gave him a chance to say adios.
If Bryz is bought out, don't expect as much fanfare |

For Briere it makes no sense to waive this.
Now he has complete control.
I don't know for certain obviously but I think it is reasonable to believe that Homer explored the trading options, and the other team's GMs know they do not need to trade for him.
I do believe as a bought out UFA he will have some suitors.
As a 35yo with a 6.5M cap hit not so much in the trade market, especially with the Flyers cap situation. |

Cap hit doesn't change after a trade and Briere stands to make more money if he is bought out. |
