Well, the guy was a popular player here, and it's nice that they gave him a chance to say adios.

Fanfare? It going to be a full on circus when that happens. Flyers will trash Bryz and he will do the same to them. |

I have yet to make it to Philly to watch a game and there are many players I regret not seeing play live (Tony Amonte being number 1) but I have to say I'm sure glad I didn't miss him. It took some time as he either wasn't at certain games due to being a scratch or injury but it did end up happening a number of times for me. |

Some dope leaked it, left him hanging in the wind, kindest thing is make it official so there aren't uncomfortable silences or fake denials. - bodiva88
Well, it wasn't exactly a secret. Briere getting a CBO was so obviously going to happen, it was hard to miss. |

He was a fun player to watch...It'd be nice if they could re-do the deal or something, but he's not the same player he once was and the cap hit is too big to justify. |

since when did you like him?
i still have that puck you gave me - Don'tForgetTocchet
I had four and a hat in the back of my car that he signed. That was the season of Briere. I think I gave Bo one too.
I liked him. Thought they should have dumped his contract two years ago but that doesn't mean I didn't like him. |

Ranking the top 10 goalies in NHL draft
http://www.usatoday.com/s...-red-line-report/2441523/ - ob18
I'd be for trying to get many mid-round picks to get a few of these guys. High-round picks are where elite forward prospects come from. Mid round picks are where elite goaltending prospects come from |

I think if renegotiating a contract was allowed Briere would be the prime example. Having said that, idk why NHL/NHLPA didn't allow that. |

Out of those mentioned, I'd like to pick up Jarry. His athleticism is great, and his positioning is even better. But we will draft 6 centers who are most comparable to Mike Richards and call it a day. |

The usual, cap circumvention for the NHL. And guaranteed contracts from the NHLPA side.

He probably wouldn't waive otherwise he could have very well been playing for Boston right now. - hereticpride
Rumor has it he wouldn't waive. I think he wants to have a choice of where he ends up and the only way he has that is to sign a new deal. Plus, he's at the point where the dollars are small and the hit is big, which is something a team in the hunt is unlikely to want. So being a UFA is better for him and for competitive teams he might want to play for. |

But I have his autograph on his bobblehead. So it's all good. |

Yeah but in that case, the CBO isn't guaranteeing full price of original signed contract and its circumventing the cap now anyways. I guess, why the restrictions on if a player can sign with team that bought him out? Not advocating all contracts eligible to be renegotiated, just don't see the problem with players re-signing with the same team i.e. Briere re-signing here. Why have to wait a year? |

The last point is an excellent point. He has a better chance to sign for a team that he wants to play for, with a much lower Cap hit. Then he does if he waives with the higher Cap hit.

These amnesty buyouts are severely limited. Other buyouts allow a guy to collect money for time not played and then go on and be payed to play for time they've already been paid for. Advantaging the player financially but the team operationally. If contracts could be renegotiated regularly, that would not be the case. The financial advantage wouldn't always be to the player. |

I get that with regular buyouts. That makes perfect sense. But just for these two CBO's for each team, why restrict it so that they couldn't essentially "re-negotiate" the contract? In the case of Briere, I'm sure he would more than love to get CBO'd and then just renegotiate and play here for the duration of his career. |

Both the League and the NHLPA have agreed to two CBO's to help teams deal with the reduced Cap. There has to be some mechanism for team's to do so.
Let's say the Flyers want to keep Briere, but can't afford the Cap hit of 6.5M. So behind doors, Briere and the Flyers come to an agreement. We'll buy you out, you'll get 2/3rds of the 5M we owe you. Now we'll resign you to a 2 year deal for 5M. So now his cap hit is reduced from 6.5M to 2.5M. And the Flyers keep the player for a reduced hit, and save 4M on the Cap. Briere get's some extra money in his pocket. Everyone is happy, except the NHL.
They're already allowing the Flyers to circumvent by allowing the buyout with no Cap hit. But they don't have much of a choice, because there has to be a mechanism in place to deal with the artificially lowered Upper Limit |

Thats how the NFL works. That's a big reason why it's the best league. The best players are always playing. Minimal guaranteed contracts.
I'll never say anything bad about any nfl player holding out for a contract or anything like that |

So we can't circumvent the cap by buying him out just to restructure his contract. |

Exactly why the NHLPA won't agree to renegotiation. Players will be forced to take paycuts. That is hallowed ground. If the NHL wanted to take away guaranteed contracts. The NHLPA would counter with fighting the Salary Cap. And we'd still be in a lockout.

I'm really going to miss that little guy. On the nights it meant the most, he had the heart of a lion.
Tough last few years for me as a fan. Losing Lappy, Pronger, Briere and soon to be Timonen. All of my favourite players. I would respect Briere if he went to Montreal. All the best of luck, wherever he goes. |

I won't miss his all around defensive play, but god that fist pump is beautiful. He was a lion when need be. He brought his whole bag of peanuts to be unleashed on a big game day. |
