Is Montreal the early front-runner in your eyes because he's French-Canadian?? Typical

MTL have no use for Briere. The future lies in Galchenyuk and Eller. Briere would only fit to replace Desharnaies and then again, it'd be a pointless move. MTL needs stronger wingers and tougher D. And they can have Tim Thomas.

St Louis is going to be in tough to keep the guys they have let alone bringing in more Ufa's.

I think you are selling the Blues short honestly. They had financial issues previously but are more or less stable financially now. Also I think you are over selling what Briere will get in FA. His salary for the next 2 years was significantly lower than his hit so if he was truly valuable a team would have traded for him to save the $ and get to the floor. Malone in Tampa is in the exact same situation and will be bought out also.

This will be a down free agency year (mainly due to the cap going down). The biggest movement will be via trade as teams maneuver to get cap compliant. Otherwise the free agency dollars just aren't there nor are there the players to command the big $.

Wrong lots of teams have lots of cash to toss at FA's and GMs toss buckets of cash at tier 2 and 3 level players..

UFA crop is getting worse every year because GMs have gotten a lot smarter about who to lock up and who not to. It has always been overrated as a means of improving your team mind you but the top end UFAs get rarer and rarer. Last year was an exception I think

Montréal has decided, under MB, to go with youth. It's why I just dont get those rumours (Brière and even Iginla). You get those veterans when you're on the verge to be a true contender and the Habs are not there just yet.

Top priorities for habs are, imho :

Get a good goalie coach to get Price playing like a solid #1 Goalie ;
Get bigger on the wings ;
Get tougher on D ;

and let our kids get some valuable experience.

Let's see....Desharnais, Plekanec, Eller, Galchenyuk, Briere all vyying for 3 spots. Sure, I see the need

IMO Price's problem isn't his technique, it's between his ears.

first off danny would probably take less to go to the devs, he stated earlier that he'll be a nj resident for life. and your team as a whole plays good enough defense that you can afford him as a liability in the d zone. might not be a bad fit, use him on your 3rd or 4th line and 1st or 2nd pp. he can still snipe.

So...

Diaz should be traded while he has some value

Gionta is probably on his final season as a Hab (good soldier and vet presence but way past his prime)

Let's see if DD can get his game together

And let's hope MB can get a solid prospect with his 1st rounder

I'd say that GMs are now locking up more guys.

I don't neccessarily agree with the "getting" smarter aspect of your argument.
