You found the way around it, your prize is a front office job to the team of your choice. - A_SteamingLombardi
Better yet you could trade him to a team like Florida where they are only paying $333,333 but get a huge cap hit to reach the floor... |

Being bought out is not a player decision, which is what I was responding to in the post you quoted. NHLPA would have nothing to say about it.
Not filing retirement papers= defecting. Thus subject to cap recapture. - Antilles
I never said being bought out was a player decision, I said not filing retirement papers was.
Then send him to a team that needs to hit the soon to be rapidly escalating cap floor, let them pay him $1M a year to sit on a beach and save them $4M a year. The point is there are options and a lot of time to figure one out. |

Luongo won't be bought out. If Gillis is serious about trading him then there will be a lot of teams lining up to try get him. Luongo is still the best goalie in the game when he wants to so 29 other GM's would love to acquire him. Comes down to whichever team can put together the best package. - hankthetank

Roberto Luongo buyout from CapGeek.com
◦2019-20: $4,117,333
◦2020-21: $4,735,333
◦2021-22: $4,735,333
◦2022-23: $402,000
◦2023-24: $402,000
◦2024-25: $402,000
That would be his caphits. The actual payments would be $402,000 each year..... So whoever buys him out late in his contract could reach the cap floor for 3 years and save $12 million in actual payments |

There's no point to Luongo holding off his retirement at the end since the Cap hit is higher than the recapture penalty.
As someone else mentioned (not a Canuck fan), the best bet for a team who has Luongo at the end is to simply buy him out under existing rules. Since the buyout is based on CASH owed it would only be 2/3 of $3.6m, spread out over 6 years. Hardly anything. - djamon
Buyout would be 2/3 of $40M spread out over 18 years I believe. |

Sorry, didn't see anyone recommend buying out last 3 yrs of contract earlier. |

Sorry...I should have been clearer. I meant at the end when the "tail" kicks in. I'm sure he'll play the next 5/6 years and then when his salary drops in half (when it was presumed he'd retire) whoever he's playing for can simply buy him out. The Cap hit and cash outlay will be almost non-existent.

Did some quick numbers, rounded so not precise, just close. If Luongo retires at
39: 4 years of 3.6 cap hit if kept till then, 1.8 if traded now
40: 3 years of 4.8 cap hit if kept till then, 2.5 if traded now
41: 2 years of 7.25 cap hit if kept till then, 3.75 if traded now
42: 1 year of 14.5 cap hit if kept till then, 7.5 if traded now
43: nothing, contract completed. - Antilles
Reading the actual CBA instead of what just about everyone has posted explaining it, would be more like:
39: 4 years of 3.6 cap hit if kept till then, 1.8 if traded now
40: 3 years of 4.1 cap hit if kept till then, 2.5 if traded now
41: 2 years of 4.3 cap hit if kept till then, 3.75 if traded now
42: 1 year of 4.3 cap hit if kept till then, 7.5 if traded now
43: nothing, contract completed
Because you do get credit for the years where salary is lower than cap hit.

I think it was jribout.
What happens to recapture amounts if the players are bought out? For example if Lu were to retire with one year left on his contract Vancouver would have a cap hit of $7,430,000 for 2021-2022. But if they traded for him and bought out the last year of his contract They would have to pay $333,333 for 2 years and have a cap hit of 4,666,667 in 2021-2022 and 333,333 in 2022-2023 - jribout
That's what I took from it anyways. |

Let me guess, you think Quick is the best goalie in the league? Classic homer. Luongo has been the most consistent goalie in the league for about a decade. Look at his stats. He can take over games and singlehandedly carry a team to the playoffs and win a round or two on his own. Any hockey fan would admit he's still the best when he wants to be. |

Lu, Edler, 1st to Florida.
Fleischmann, Versteeg, Upshall, 1st to Vancouver
Basically Lu for 3 bad contracts. Edler and a 1st for Florida's 1st is a steep price but necessary.
Vancouver buys out Ballard and Upshall.
Florida resigns Weiss.
Vancouver trades the 3rd overall pick, Bieksa and a 2nd to the Avs for the 1st overall pick Barrie, Jones and McLeod.
Gillis, you're welcome.

Patriots go from 2 1000 yard receiving TE to none. Gronk out for the yr and Hernandez out for 20 yrs - Bieksa#3
(frank) the Patriots! But seriously, wow can't believe Hernandez got himself into that poop. Apparently it has something to do with his sister dating one of the guys he might have killed or helped kill, his sister was probably dating some bumhole and he got involved and now he's (frank)ed. |

Exactly. I wouldn't trade Luongo for Quick AND Bernier, let alone straight up. Canucks have the two best goalies in the NHL for sure. |

Thank god he's not been serious about trading him for the past year .
Certainly plenty of teams would like a Luongo, but unfortunately contracts exist and we have a cap system. That contract is next to untradeable unless Gillis retains salary and over a long term deal like that it's a pretty steep price to pay.
This isn't going to be decided by teams putting together the best package. But whether Gillis takes the hit and buys him out, retains enough salary to make it manageable, or trades valuable assets with Luongo to encourage teams to take that contract off his hands. |

I don't know how Ian thinks Miller is worse than Luongo. It's hard to be a canuck fan and a realist, but it can be done. quite a few do it in the comments section, but not all of us.
Back to the point. Miller and Luongo are both great goalies who are looking for a change, the only real difference is that Luongo's contract is going to make it very hard to get a return, teams will pay through the nose for Miller. - Troutback
I think Miller is more movable than Lu, but he would fetch more if he had additional term on his contract. |

That's why Edler and the first are there
Luongo and the other 3 are just there for bad contract swaps. |

Welcome to another summer of your fans trying to weasel something good out of everyone while bailing on a bad contract.
Gillis screwed the pooch on this, I think EVERYONE else BUT you has the leverage, time for fans to come back to earth.
Oh, and we don't want him either...sorry. |

question, when Taylor Pyatt scored 23 goals playing for Vancouver under Vigneault several years back, who were his usual linemates? |
