"Crap now the Sabres want to move their over-priced netminder, who's never done anything and is appending UFA after next year. We've got to move now. GO, GO, GO!"

- Are you talking about Vezina Trophy winner Ryan Milller?

- Gooderbebad

Of 4 years ago.....he's no Vezina Trophy caliber anymore.......

So Gillis should lose his jobe because the owner asked him to sign Lu for 12 years?
- IanEsplen

along with trading for Ballard, trading for Booth, trading away assets for Roy. For having the team in a position where now they have to likely buy out one or more of these three bad contracts (Luongo, Booth, Ballard) just to be able to sign bottom line players to fill the roster and remain cap compliant, for not seeing this coming and being proactive about it. For opening his mouth and announcing his expected return for Luongo, for saying the contract wasn't an issue in a trade to have the player himself say his contract "sucks"

it's a circus. The guy looks like a chump and has the team in a bad place. I wouldn't trust him to make moves to get out of that situation. Fire his ass.

Why should Gillis lose his job over this deal? It was a perfectly acceptable deal within the confines of the previous CBA. The NHL okayed it. Guess what, so did management. The only thing that makes Luongo's deal "suck" is that Schneider has become so good.
- KB3Point0

He should lose his job over the way he handled it after he knew Lu asked for a trade....just a total distraction to the team and unfair to the player. He was asking a kings ransom for someone whos contract doesnt warrant it.

Or Keith, or Hossa, or Franzen, or Backstrom, or J Staal, or Ehrhoff, or...
- KB3Point0

Wtf?

These players and their situations have nothing in common with luongo. Nothing.

When one if them demands a trade and we're still sitting here a year later, then we'll start comparing.

Yet no one worries about 9 years at 6 million for Zetterberg
- IanEsplen

The difference is that zetterberg isn't sitting on the bench doing absolutely nothing.

None of the guys in those contracts get paid to sit on the bench like Lou
- robin_steele264

Luongo doesn't have to sit on the bench. What they do currently is irrelevant when talking about their contracts, Luongo WILL be a starter again.

But none of Zetterberg, Kronwall or Franzen will see the ends of their deals and Detroit will have to carry about $5m in penalties.

It's a valid point. No one is going to get bit harder with this rule than Detroit. They have 3 contracts on their books which will be subject to the penalty.
- djamon

Three? Zetterberg's sure. Kronwall's is fine and Franzen might get bought out next summer to avoid the penalty down the road.

And when teams are desperate to trade one of those guys they might have a problem.

Until then it doesn't matter.

how many top six forwards does each team field? How many starting goalies can they ice? (Hint, the answer is in the question!)

Here's the telling question for you Ian, how many shifts a game does the backup goaltender play?

Which one do you think could still contribute on a per game basis? Which one has zero value sitting on the bench for say, 60 games a year?

Remind me, what did Sundin sign for???

Offer aside, you can't bag on a guy for the offer if it never came to fruition....

1 year 10 mil I believe, instead of 2 years at 20.

***edit

pardon me, slightly lower

The Canucks and Sundin eventually agreed on a one-year, prorated contract (he signed around Christmas time) that worked out to carry a cap hit of about $8.5 million

mike gillis in a coaching interview...

mike: so tell me, do you have any NHL coaching experience?

coach: no, but i'm a quick learner and can't wait to get started.

mike: hmmm, i dunno about that....

coach: no offense, but....didn't you become an NHL GM with no prior experience?

mike: shhhhhhh...we're not talking about me here.

I dont know whats worse. Dealing with this whole Lu situation for the last year and a half or reading that some of our fans still think he can get a decent prospect in the return.

Trivia questions HB faithful. What do Vinny Lecal and LU have in common???

Answer: No one wants them because of their contract.
