None of the guys in those contracts get paid to sit on the bench like Lou

It's a valid point. No one is going to get bit harder with this rule than Detroit. They have 3 contracts on their books which will be subject to the penalty.

Thanks man. I was being a bit of a smartass but thanks for those numbers as I'm sure they are about to be argued over.....

MG offered 2 yr for 20 mill. Sundin said no and wanted to just play for 1 year. So essentially Sundin saved the nucks because if he signed that 2 year deal we would have had no cap room to resign the sedins.

The difference is that zetterberg isn't sitting on the bench doing absolutely nothing.
- KingDoughnuts

Not only that but he is contributing and will continue to. Even so, you have teams with these ridiculous deals looking at buying out guys even though they are playing and contributing. Richards may get bought out this year or next. Same with Hossa I'm hearing.

mike gillis in a coaching interview...

mike: so tell me, do you have any NHL coaching experience?

coach: no, but i'm a quick learner and can't wait to get started.

mike: hmmm, i dunno about that....

coach: no offense, but....didn't you become an NHL GM with no prior experience?

mike: shhhhhhh...we're not talking about me here.

- Phratz

I can't crap on Gillis for lack of experience, Snow was a hilarious hire. The difference is that he's actually got a plan and seems to be working toward it. He's like a mad genuis. Gillis is just angry.

I dunno,

Quick is maybe 6'
Howard 6'
Lundquist 6'

Some pretty good smaller goalies there..IMHO

At least with Bernier you can negotiate a reasonable deal. There is a reason good number teams are interested in him. Not only the talent part but also a nice cap hit and term that could be set up.

Sure there is risk Bernier maybe he fails, Kings D system is pretty good, but Bernier also is a talented kid. Seems there is just as much if not more risk on a guy who lost his starting job, and is owed a brinks car worth of $$ for many years to come.

Think the list of GM's who want to sign up for that cap hit, especially given the drop to $64 million overall , is a short one. But maybe not.

Don't need it to be a long list. Just need one.

The luongo trade is Ian's hit machine.
Even the title invites hits, implying vancouver has alot of options..

He's not gonna get much in return cause his contract sucks.

Thread over.

New blog please

I am well aware what happened and the implications. He dodged a bullet. What GM hasn't?

Fact is, Sundin didnt sign for $20 mill over 2 so lets stop yammering about it.

Man, we turn on our team too god damned quickly.......its nauseating.....

He should lose his job over the way he handled it after he knew Lu asked for a trade....just a total distraction to the team and unfair to the player. He was asking a kings ransom for someone whos contract doesnt warrant it.
- BodyCheckRadio

What did he turn down that was so ridiculous he should lose his job?

It wasn't a distraction to the team, in fact, as Schneider was hurt in the playoffs, it should have saved the team. Too bad AV crapped the bed so badly.

I had to laugh reading the Ek thread about Bernier. Most in there seemed pretty sure he would fetch Couturier and a second.

Three? Zetterberg's sure. Kronwall's is fine and Franzen might get bought out next summer to avoid the penalty down the road.
- The Law

Looking at it roughly and estimating when each player is likely to retire it seems Zetterberg would hit them about $4.3m for 3 years, Franzen about $2.6m for 4 and Kronwall about $2.1m for 2 years.

Sure they could buy out Franzen, but that still costs them almost $12m and they lose a top 6 player.

It's not a good situation...period.

Wtf?

These players and their situations have nothing in common with luongo. Nothing.

When one if them demands a trade and we're still sitting here a year later, then we'll start comparing.

This again? The other goalies are more attractive because most of them had better numbers than Lu last year and theyre not signed for the next decade!
- MaximumBone

Do you think they just look at last year?

Backstrom and J. Staal's deals are not subjected to the rule. I don't think Keith is either.

But until they demand a trade or detroit is desperate to move them, its nowhere near as bad or even comparable to luongos situation. Period

But none are asking to be traded. And det/chi/buf are happy to keep them.

Again, nothing in common with the luongo situation.

U might be keeping up, but you're wildly off topic.

Yep, if only. Just no way he's part of that deal. Unless... there's more being packaged with Bernier. But I highly doubt it.

Sundin might have actually been a good player for us if he had signed the contract, worked out in the summer and started the season in October instead of going ice fishing and not working out for 7 months. He was always in great shape. Then he showed up in Vancouver and that shape was round.

I believe that even in his short stint here, he had a positive influence and helped transform Kesler from a 3rd liner to a top 6 player.....

I'm not talking about the same thing as you.

Luongo wanting to be traded is just a variable, it doesn't make his contract situation any better or worse than those guys on Detroit.
