I'd like them to trade down and try to get two first round picks.
Get two possible future blue chip players in this draft.
Would not hurt if one of them is a defenseman, especially if Risto or Robert Haag are still around when they pick.
Not sure if possible but with the cap and the current prospects, use this draft and stock up. - Marc D
Not crazy on trading down. Would rather 1 Timonen then a grossmann and a talbot.

Yes, since forwards are more easy to project and develop quicker, let's develop a new drafting system where we exclusively draft forwards in the first round. I see a Cup in our near future by employing this philosophy. - jmatchett383
Every year is different, but this year, the forward depth is much greater, and of the players likely to be available at 11, the forwards have less question marks and are generally considered more likely to reach their full NHL potential than the D-men. It boils down to how much risk you want to take with your first round pick. Do you want a more sure thing (aka make sure you at least get something pretty good for your high value pick), or do you want to roll the dice and make a riskier move that may leave you with nothing for your high value pick? I'd rather take the surer thing, and address the D deficiencies in other ways. Obviously, opinions vary. But that's how I'd do it if I was drafting. |

I suppose. We'll see if that changes come early November.
By the way, it's gonna be a little girl. - jmatchett383
Congrats BTW!!! AWESOME! I have two boys. What I meant in the previous post, put more bluntly, is the kids are the ultimate "c*ck blockers". I can probably count my "lucky encounters" on my hands since #2 was born in October. It doesn't help that, because he has had sleep issues, due to recurring ear infections (gotta love the bonuses you get with those day care germ breeding grounds) his crib is in our room...next to our bed
Ah but they are fun little buggers. Littlest is sitting on his own, almost crawling, and saying "dada", "mama" and "boob" (he knows where the meal ticket is). My oldest is in T-ball at our YMCA. He loves it. I am now an assistant coach
He wants to pitch some day. Is it too early to teach him about "chin music"? |

Well, personally, I haven't been as excited about a player like Pulock in a while, probably since they (could have) drafted John Carlson. I'm just very, VERY high on him, and again, as an exception this year, I'd like them to target either him or Risto. |

I'm not convinced picking at #11 gets a Timonen.
Flyers have picked well in the mid first round in the past. |

Thanks. Well, so far, he pregnancy alone is a c*ck block. There's a kind of funny/sick story about that that isn't fir to post here; I'll just say, it's not all on her, I got freaked the F out.
Also, never too early to teach chin music, that's a fundamental just as much as throwing and hitting. I can't wait to teach my girl (at, say, 3 years old) how to cleverly mask how to butt-end a player (my specialty when I played). |

Huh?
This draft is conspicuous in its apparent absence of generational talents.
Barkov is ethnically Russian, it's not a question of nationality. - Tomahawk
Someone in here a few blogs ago posted an article that gave the top prospects in this draft a point rating based on their advanced statistics, and compared them to current NHL players before they were drafted. Drouin's numbers were off the charts and the last player to apparently rank like Drouin did was Crosby. And Galchenyuk is ethnically Belarusian. He was also born in America, played his final year of youth hockey on the Young Americans, and played in the OHL. Barkov was born in Finland, raised in Finland, and plays in only Finnish hockey leagues. The dude is Finnish. |

It's a little like 2003 (although not as HQ in depth)... you could settle for one Braydon Coburn high, or you could get a Brent Burns AND Corey Perry with two later picks. The difference in quality between the #5-6 pick and the #25-26 pick isn't really that pronounced. |

Generational talent doesn't happen in every draft. Or else it wouldnt be generational.
What I would say is this draft has more players that will be as good or better then players like Hall, RNH, Yakupov, Seguin, etc... I would say the top 5 of this draft has just as good of a chance as being as good or better then most previous years 1st overalls. |

Pulock seems like he could be a good player. I'm not as high on him as you seem to be, but if I had to pick a d-man from the guys likely to be available at 11 it would probably be him. Still think a forward would be a less risky pick, but I won't be too upset if they wind up taking Pulock. |

Exactly. Every player has his risks, is an unknown quantity in the NHL, and therefore I prefer we pick a defenseman (Pulo, Risto, Zado) with #11. I have little interest in Nurse, not only because of the McNabb thing but also because it's thought he is still quite rough around the edges. Risto is already playing against men, and that can only help.
Pick D to address a weakness, hope they develop (at minimum) into a top 4 player, and then, for a little while, perhaps we can stop with the trade scenarios that have us trading Coots+ or Schenn+ for a defeseman.
Sooner or later the Flyers are going to have to bite the bullet and roll the bones on what they believe is a stud defenseman, or they are going to have to keep giving up assets to fill the holes.

You're talking about NHL equivalency. The numbers for Drouin were impressive, and has led a lot of people to speculate that he is actually the best prospect available, but nobody's affixing the "generational" tag to him.
Crosby/OV/Malkin were the last batch of true generational talents. Tavares and Stamkos were close. But this year, the top of the draft relates much closer to Yakupov/Hall/RNH than it does to the aforementioned guys. It's the depth that's really noteworthy.
Barkov = ethnically Russian w/ dual citizenship. As with most 2nd-generation immigrants, he identifies with both. |

I'd much rather take Nurse than Zado. I don't think Zado brings much of a different element than this team. Then again Nurse won't be there at 11. |

Luckily in just more than a week we can all stop beating this poor draft horse.
And I'm partial to Risto, then Pulo.

You end up assuming the risk at some point. Whether its trading assets (Pronger) or signing a player to more than they're worth. (Carle). Who says that these two options are less risky than drafting a defenseman in the first round?

Word. It's all we can do until June 30th. Then we will speculate about UFA market. |
