I think Read for Bernier would be a legitimate trade for both teams. - stveshdy
The tricky part about acquiring Read is your probably going to offer him an extension of at least $4 million/yr or the likelihood is that he tests free agency next summer. He's great value for next season, but you have to believe Lombardi will be looking to acquire asset/assets that can be maintained for more then one season. With the Kings cap situation, paying that kind of money to Read is a question mark at this point. |

i don't think that's so much a neg for read, because they're going to lose bernier anyway. to get a guy like read, who can step in any situation right away, is quite a boon to a cup contender. willie mitchell coming off the books could swap out a 3.5MM salary the following yr. |

No doubt, he'll try to get as much as he can, but it's my opinion that both LA and Pitt are working from a weakened position regarding Bernier and Letang because everybody knows they just can't reasonably afford their new contracts.
But that doesn't mean someone won't overpay for them. |

In all seriousness, it certainly didn't look like much. And what happened to Toews? |

On the short-term, I agree about Read and the Kings. Long-term planning has to be weighed against the ability to win the Cup in an upcoming season. It just depends on how much Lombardi wants to spend on the forwards as opposed to the defense long-term.
All things being considered, I don't have a problem with a straight swap of Bernier for Read.

they have time, before an offer sheet can be officially sent, he will be traded, they have time to gut the desperate as much as they can. |

as long as they have a plan to replace the 20 plus goals Read can produce. |

Yup. Missed it when it happened, watching it now...he got popped going through the middle. Game 6 will be interesting going back to Boston with these injuries. |

Bernier stopping 20 goals Bryz would have otherwise let in?
Addition by subtraction?

there are teams that may want to trade for miller, hiller or phyllis diller
then there are the UFAs like backstrom and emery and CBO candidates like Lu...iow, options exist if bernier falls thru. |

Laughton, being more of a defensive player, will hopefully carry some of that weight. |

They have a plan, not sure the fan base is going to particularly enjoy that decision. I can't say for sure the answer is Bernier or Mason, but I'm pretty sure it isn't Heeter and strictly from a financial standpoint with Bryz I doubt he is the answer (no need to debate the on-ice performance because it has been beaten to death).
Bernier has a pedigree, been very successful at every stage of his hockey career, and yes limited experience in the NHL, but successful nonetheless. I don't have a problem with him being obtained. |

considering that it would end the current sideshow as well, i'm ok w/ it too. don't really want to pay more. |

yeah, how about that, but unless they commit to better defense as a team, (and not have 5 defenseman all injured at the same time), even Bernier wont help. |

He's like the energetic swiss army knife of this team.
Not to mention the fact that the dude (because of his major in college?) is a fitness fanatic.
Why are folks so ready to ditch Matt Read again? Someone help me out. |

Thank god if it is his last game! He was a bust in Tampa and he is so injury prone I would package him out asap. |
