there are teams that may want to trade for miller, hiller or phyllis diller
then there are the UFAs like backstrom and emery and CBO candidates like Lu...iow, options exist if bernier falls thru. - isaiah520
True, (may be the first Phyllis Diller shout out here ever)
but some of those guys make a lot of $$$ & again they would be in the same boat with the cap |

yeah, how about that, but unless they commit to better defense as a team, (and not have 5 defenseman all injured at the same time), even Bernier wont help. - puckhead17
Yup, we do have that to worry about. So many question marks.

I'm pretty sure the coach's arse is on the line if this team gets off to a slow start. He won't have much latitude in my opinion, so I would hope Lava is able to hold guys accountable if they are being deficient in the defensive zone. I don't believe Lava is dumb (did win the Cup), but stubbornness can be just about as damming as stupidity. |

options are available that'll take other goalie seeking teams out of the mix. a floor team like NYI might be willing to spend more to get a guy like miller |

Lava should have been fired but now they are saving that for this xmas instead. He is a coach will a short window of opportunity and then his effectiveness wears off. His system is why we can't get a goalie to look good. |

Honestly, the whole effectiveness thing I think in all sports is completely over blown (there just is a natural shelf life that goes on for most coaches). There isn't a large percentage of coaches in pretty much all 4 major sports that last over 4 years. That being written, I thought it was time for Lava to go at the end of the season, but he's back for now on a very short leash. |

it'll be different w/ the wave of CBOs...some which may be a surprise or come later in the CBO period after trade options are exhausted. really, a once in a lifetime off season for the NHL. |

Very hard for Flyers to catch up to the Islanders in the short term. Snow has put together an impressive and deep talent pool.
I believe Bryzgalov is a good NHL goal tender. I think a buy out is premature right now. They have two years for the amnesty option.
I fear, if he gets bought out, he goes to another team, like Phoenix, and becomes a Vezina contender. Worse, Snow takes him on for $2m and Bryzgalov backstops them to a first place finish. I think there is reason to be cautious. The guy can play and maybe the media could have just left him alone. Quirky goaltenders are not unusual. Thomas and Miller are pretty outspoken guys but they have not been subject to vigilante journalism. Why is everyone so keen to target this guy? |

My views are that they should exercise the buy out now. He hasn't played consistently well enough to justify the commitment, and with the cap recapture rules, if he retires or jumps to the KHL early, the Flyers will be facing a massive cap crunch.
In the case of Miller and especially Thomas, the play has never been an issue. Thomas put up spectacular numbers in pretty much every year of his career in Boston, and Miller's been very solid as well.
Bryzgalov does not have that to lean on. He's never taken a team to a Stanley Cup or on a deep playoff run as the starter. Thomas wasn't overly popular on his team, especially by the end of his time in Boston, but his play made it a non factor. Bryzgalov has been ripped by his Phoenix teammates, and there's been the start of that in Philly as well.
One Philly columnist, Rich Hofman, made a good point. If Bryzgalov was a free agent, should the Flyers consider re-signing him? Can't worry about what he'd do on another team, only what he would do here. |
