The problem isn't how good he is. Its the holes needing to be addressed elsewhere on the team with limited assets. - hereticpride
What hole though? On D??
Timonen-Schenn
Streit-Coburn
Grossman-Gustafsson
Meszaros
Gervais
If anything, if we are healthy, we need to subtract.

Voracek scored at a 38 goal pace this past Season. Hartnell scored 37 goals the Season before playing with Giroux. I think they have plenty of offensive players. Need to concentrate on building a better all around team game, and team defense. Then they'll score more goals - MJL
I want them to add another scoring winger, but I also agree with this post. I think they could use one more 20-goal guy who is right-handed, but I don't think the season is threatened if they don't find him.
I'm truly not worried about the goaltending -- I'm really not. I'm more concerned about team defense, as you noted. I think if that doesn't show improvement, that'll be what gets Peter Laviolette fired.
He has to devise a workable system of two-way defense, where the forwards contribute. |

But you need to take in account the injuries Grossmann and Mez have had over the past few years. I think it would be smart to dump Mez (who has a $4-million cap hit) to free up some space and/or bring in someone whether that would be the draft or trade. |

No, I meant the first 12-to-15 starts next season -- make him be the No. 1, see where you are after that stretch of games.
There will be other goalies available this offseason, or even early next season, if Mason falters. There will be. - AllInForFlyers
Oh ok. Well at this point I'd give Mason the shot too. I'm buying out Bryz regardless if its me, and now they've boxed themselves in to need to get a Emery type |

Some rumblings Phaneuf may be in play. Nonis says he will trade just about anyone, but says no one has called on the captain...yet. - moylander
I would deal for him if not for Streit just coming here |

No, they haven't. They still can trade Read or other assets. Jonathan Bernier is not to only young goalie out there with a good pedigree.
Having a one track mind will lead to a lot of foolish decisions, because you tend to be blinded to the other options available. |

I'd like to add a physical two way Winger who plays a solid all around game, that can chip in with some offense. Another big goal scoring Winger would be nice, but not necessary. This team's biggest issues and problems it needs to solve are it's defense, and how it plays.

How about Jaroslav Halak, who is 28 and is already a number one with a good playoff run under his belt?
How about James Reimer, who has a better career save % in more career games, behind a worse team than Bernier?
What does age have to do with it? Who cares if the goalie is a bit older than the forwards? Goalies tend to develop more slowly than forwards, so having a guy the same age isn;t necessarily the best plan.
You're acting like they passed up an opportunity to trade Jody Shelley for Henrik Lunqvist. |

Obviously. Bernier was the lone goalie who could possibly end the carousel. God forbid they trade for a 28 year old goalie. |

Yea, it's June 23rd. The Season starts in October. Which is over 3 months from now. I'm gonna wait just a little while longer before criticizing the Organization for the moves they made in the Off Season. I sure hope the Flyers don't draft a Forward with #11. I don't know if I can take it!

Obviously Reimer isn't the guy if the Leafs just apparently gave up a ton in some people's eyes to upgrade. If they get Halak and he's great you can say I told you so, but one I don't think The same package would get him, and I'm not sure he's a true #1 either with how good that St. Louis defense is they still got bounced early two yrs in a row. I'm not saying Bernier is going to be Lundquist, the point is goalies his age and pedigree aren't available often, especially for less than a 1st rd pick or elite prospect |

i agree. now i will have to jump on the Lu bandwagon
Darren Dreger @DarrenDreger 3m
Canucks are still confident they will be able to trade Luongo. The Bernier trade takes the Leafs out of the mix.

It's nuts. Bernier's never even been a starter and now people are proclaiming him a NUMBER ONE!
Hell, if was just Read, I could have lived with it...but the Leafs gave up a good young forward in Frattin, a solid back-up in Scrivins, a 2nd rounder and they retained cash.
The Flyers lack two of those assets, which means the other two have to be better than what the Leafs offered. |

I think people sometimes forget that you need more than players with high goal totals to be a successful team. Read is that jack of all trades type player that any team would kill to have. I think Read and a 2nd would have gotten Bernier if Read wasn't an UFA after this season. Not to mention, it's far from unheard of that a promising young backup can turn into a flop (Marc Denis anyone?)
And all this Ryan nonsense.. Don't get me wrong, I like the kid and would love to see him in orange and black but I would never trade for him and give up all the assets it would take to get him. We just don't have a pressing need for another scoring forward with defensive question marks. And if he really wants to play in Philly like he's hinted at and everyone is convinced of, wait two years, see what the team needs are and sign him as a free agent!
Another thing I don't understand is everyone wanting to ship Coburn off. He is a mediocre #1, good #2 and great #3-4 guy, in his prime, with a very cap friendly number. And with this being Kimo's last year (potentially) how could you even fathom this team without him AND Coburn next year?
What ever, rant over. |

I understand where you are coming from. 7 games of meaningless hockey shouldn't be a deciding factor. The kid has a pedigree, he won a Calder trophy, and then lost his way. The talent is there, he's got to get in between his ears fixed. Is it a given that happens? Of course not.
That being said, I don't want to bring in a 30+ high priced guy like Miller, or Luongo. Flyers are back to square 1 in between the pipes. What else is new. So frustrating that the solution was right under their nose in Bobrovsky and the entire organization screwed the pooch. - PLindbergh31
Not denying the Mason's talent or future can be very bright. But just because our backup goalie in Bob had a Vezina in his future does not mean Mason does. He could, but I'm more interested in watching his play both here and in Columbus, both the good and the bad make a decision on Mason and not on what happened with Bob. And my conclusion is that he needs more time to get comfortable again.
As far as bringing in a high priced contract like Miller or Lou. I agree, only because I do not want to give up the assets for it. I would rather keep Bryz another year and then buy him out rather than bringing in another high priced contract that we would not be able to buyout later. Would we get rid of Bryz I would not be against bringing in another smaller contract like Hiller, Halak, or signing Backstrom or Lou (should he get bought out) to a reasonable deal shorter and for less $ than Bryz. Maybe 3 years while Mason gets ready. Loungo will have had enough of long unmovable contracts.
In any case, I like Mason, his rookie year, his 7 flyers games, but I don't trust him completely because of his 3-1/2 awful (worst starting goalie of the year) seasons with Columbus. |
