I think people sometimes forget that you need more than players with high goal totals to be a successful team. Read is that jack of all trades type player that any team would kill to have. I think Read and a 2nd would have gotten Bernier if Read wasn't an UFA after this season. Not to mention, it's far from unheard of that a promising young backup can turn into a flop (Marc Denis anyone?)
And all this Ryan nonsense.. Don't get me wrong, I like the kid and would love to see him in orange and black but I would never trade for him and give up all the assets it would take to get him. We just don't have a pressing need for another scoring forward with defensive question marks. And if he really wants to play in Philly like he's hinted at and everyone is convinced of, wait two years, see what the team needs are and sign him as a free agent!
Another thing I don't understand is everyone wanting to ship Coburn off. He is a mediocre #1, good #2 and great #3-4 guy, in his prime, with a very cap friendly number. And with this being Kimo's last year (potentially) how could you even fathom this team without him AND Coburn next year?
What ever, rant over. - Roytastic
Doesn't mean he couldnt ever change his game. He loved Philly all of his life. I can see him coming to Philly and being the best complete player he could possibly be.

What other young goalies say under 27-28 with #1 potential are available, and are going to cost the same type of package? - FlyerAdam30
Obviously don't know if he's available but Jack Campbell fits that description. |

Obviously Reimer isn't the guy if the Leafs just apparently gave up a ton in some people's eyes to upgrade. If they get Halak and he's great you can say I told you so, but one I don't think The same package would get him, and I'm not sure he's a true #1 either with how good that St. Louis defense is they still got bounced early two yrs in a row. I'm not saying Bernier is going to be Lundquist, the point is goalies his age and pedigree aren't available often, especially for less than a 1st rd pick or elite prospect - FlyerAdam30
Yes, the Leafs are the team that traded Tuukka Rask for Andrew Raycroft, so they could keep Justin Pogge and they are now the Gold Standard in goalie scouting. Good to know.
I would have been OK if it was just Read for Bernier. More than that is an overpayment. The guy is unproven, with 62 NHL games under his belt. Reimer has played more games and has a better save % than Bernier, and was the number one goalie for a playoff team. All more than Bernier's ever accomplished.
I think Bernier's a good goalie and will be a good goalie, but I'm not 100% sold on him.
As for Halak, he had his playoff run with the Canadiens and played great. He's had ups and downs in St Louis, but he's certainly more accomplished than Bernier. |

Minus any stats or $, Im a Phaneuf fan.
In reality it may not make sense, unless TOR eats some of his $, but Id have no idea why they would or what we have that theyd want that isnt Schenn or Coots. Id not give up either of them. |

No, I meant the first 12-to-15 starts next season -- make him be the No. 1, see where you are after that stretch of games.
There will be other goalies available this offseason, or even early next season, if Mason falters. There will be. - AllInForFlyers
I'm with ya. Sign Backstrom or Emery (instead of trading assets for unknown commodity in goal) and see what happens. |

If they really want Ryan, the most I would offer is:
Read, this years 2nd, next years 1st, and their choice of Ghost or Lauridsen. If that's not enough, oh well. |

the flyers did well to resist raising the ante for bernier. they are not in a position to waste assets and they still have options. |

The ONLY thing Ryan has over Read is his physical edge and probably around 10 more points a season of production. Read is much better all around. I think Read and a pick for Ryan is an overpayment. |

I don't know if any team would kill to have Matt Read if LA just potenially passed on him. Bobby Ryan is easily the sexier name and there will likely be more takers then Read. |

i agree. now i will have to jump on the Lu bandwagon
Darren Dreger @DarrenDreger 3m
Canucks are still confident they will be able to trade Luongo. The Bernier trade takes the Leafs out of the mix. - moylander
Am I missing something on Bobby Lu's contract? Doesn't he have a no trade clause also, so he can't just be traded to a team who wants to get to the floor? |

No, they haven't. They still can trade Read or other assets. Jonathan Bernier is not to only young goalie out there with a good pedigree.
Having a one track mind will lead to a lot of foolish decisions, because you tend to be blinded to the other options available. - Jsaquella
This I do completely agree with. There are other young options out there. That is where their attention should be if making a move for a goalie. I also have to agree with MJL, the deal might have been what we all think and more, but the Kings liked Toronto's deal better. Additionally, someone said that perhaps they didn't add assets here bc they are needed to go elsewhere. That too is completely plausible, but I just felt Bernier would have been a worthwhile pickup. |

You have to look at the big picture. La wanted someone that was going to be under their control and affordable. Read doesn't fit that description. Read was the better player but it wouldn't make sense to trade for a one year rental essentially.
EDIT
Not to mention they also wanted another goalie coming back their way AND cap relief. Neither of which we were willing to give them I'm sure. |

I'm not saying to trade Read for Halak. Just saying Halak is an option.
I'd rather move Read for Bernier, but I mention Halak to show there's other options.

Given our current defense, no it's not. Guy could be a solid top-4 defenseman that we don't have to give $4M+ to on the open market.
Also, if he was gonna move, I'd hope it would be for a need, as we already have a top-line right winger. |

I agree that Bernier would have been a good addition, but I'm very hesitant to overpay for a goalie. Too often goalies bounce to a new system and struggle.
Coming from LA, where they play solid defense, to Philly where it's organized(somewhat) chaos is a much different task |

I don't have a problem with Homer drawing a line in the sand and not trying to outbid the Leafs. I don't know if the Flyers would go with two relatively unknown quantities, but Bill's idea of Anton Khudobin is interesting, not cost any assets in a trade, and would be relatively cheap against the cap allowing flexibility to address other areas on the roster. |

i think Homer will make a deal before the draft or at the draft, trading for Ryan+Hiller or Shattenkirk+Halak
atleast i hope so...
i agree no reason to overpay for goaltending. Toronto did that. That trade is absolutely fantastic for the Kings. |
