Streit signing is an absolute WIN !
the guy is a hockey stud and will play top minutes in all situations just like Timonen. I'm extremely happy we got him locked in for 4 years. He solidifies our defence in many many ways. Team captain for Swiss team that beat Canada in Olympics. Team captain on the Isles. He's a couple years younger than Timonen but while Kimmo has played 1,015 games, Streit has only played 491.
He just rocked this past season with 27 pts in 48 reg games and 5pts in 6 playoff games. He's actually slightly taller and more weight than Kimmo.
and the cherry on the top, we didnt have to give up anything in trade.
How can you call this anything but a massive win for a deam that has obvious defensive issues? - MrBigglesworth
+1
Exactly what the defense needed. Someone that can move the puck, and beat opponents to the puck on the back end.

To clarify, I meant a 'win now' move, as in a move to made specifically to make this team a cup competitor this season. I'm actually aight with the signing, leery about the term though. - BulliesPhan87
The "win now" moves are what is keeping us from the CUP. Again, just my opinion. |

I still think they need to rely on Coburn more offensively. He is a big guy, with a big shot, and someone I love having on the point. I wish they'd work the crap out of his O-game. - Flyersgod
It's too late. He is what he is. Regarding his shot, good thing they put the fan nets up. |

We have players dying/killing themselves because they get addicted to the pain killers that keep them in the line-up.
But yes, play on. - bradleyc4
Easy to suggest that is the case, but I can comfortably say that there are far fewer players taking (let alone abusing) pain killers than we are led to believe. I doubt he even took a narcotic. |

Not only must a franchise be smart when capturing a Cup, a great deal of luck is involved as well. The Blackhawks had zero of their key players out in the playoffs due to injury. Guys missed a few games here and there, but essentially they were healthy. When is the last time the Flyers A.) Started the playoffs healthy, and B.) Finished the playoffs healthy? |

1 - 4 = MacKinnon, Jones, Drouin, and Barkov.
TSN's Top 10 rankings for 2013 also include the following:
5. Swedish centre Elias Lindholm. He is one of the most complete players in the draft, a savvy two-way pivot with offensive skills and hockey sense who makes all the right moves with and without the puck.
6. Russian forward Valeri Nichushkin. The hulking right shot winger from Chelyabinsk can play a pure power game when he drives the net and now that he's free of KHL commitments and able to play in the NHL next season he may be less of a draft-day wild card.
7. Ottawa 67s centre Sean Monahan. The late 94 birthdate, 3rd-year OHLer is a skilled forward who put up good offensive numbers but plays a strong all-around game that may have suffered at times this season because the 67s had a poor season and traded away some key veterans.
8. Finnish defenceman Rasmus Ristolainen. The 6-foot-4 blueliner owns what may be the hardest slapshot of any 2013 draftee and he plays a hard, straight line physical two-way game.
9. Soo Greyhound defenceman Darnell Nurse. At a shade under 6-4 and still filling out, the son of former CFLer Richard Nurse has the frame, aggressive mindset and tremendous mobility to be a hard-to-play against two-way or shutdown defenceman.
10. London Knight forward Max Domi. The son of former NHL tough guy Tie Domi is only 5-9 but at a playing weight in the 190s and with his quickness, power and mad puck skills, Domi can score or make plays with the best of them.

Well said.
I maintain to this day that the 2004 Flyers, if healthy, beat both Tampa and Calgary to win the Cup, but whatever. That's as valuable as the vaunted Salary Cap Championship that folks seem to fall in love with. |

NHL teams really can't afford to carry dmen that aren't able to perform a dependable, smart first pass anymore... the ones that can't have been flushed out of the league since the previous lockout, or have been converted to forward (John Scott).
There's not a guy on the Flyers' current blueline that isn't capable of making that first pass, including Grossmann. Of course, some guys are more adept at it than others, but there's no Luke Richardsons on this team. |

Agree 100%. That was our year to win the cup and injuries crushed those hopes. |

That's the thing, though. I don't see this as a 'win now' move. They added a player who brings needed elements to the blueline. |

He will be 36, and is not going to be part of "my" team when it's time for them to compete for the cup. Besides, my personal opinion is that he really isn't that good in his own end and this team needs to be better in it's own end. They have guys that can make that highly touted "first pass". I need guys that can make smart plays when the pressure is on. - iskatefast
This team can win the cup if they stay healthy.
Did you forget how we used 13 defencemen this past shortened season...
Bruno Gervais had 3rd most games played for 18 minutes a night over 37 games! |
