The lung is kind of spongelike. How does one have a hole in one's lung? Just asking one of our medical aficionados. - bodiva88
Few ways.
Inhaling something, or I think I heard its possible to get a small tear from over-exertion but thats unlikely.
Think the most common would probably be from taruma (getting hit, or maybe a spear), but its such a weird injury unless you are stabbed.
All I can give. |

Sponge is a decent comparison, but, unlike a sponge, the is able to perforate and open close like a valve. My guess is that he played through the broken rib (against the dr's recommendation) and sustained the tear. The rib likely poked a hole. He also probably has a small pneumothorax (air outside of the lung, inside the cavity) which would explain the hospital stay. I cant see how anyone would let him play with known pneumothorax |

Yeah, a broken rib can puncture a lung. I've had two lung collapses in my life. Not fun.

I'm not so sure he's a player I would have signed. There is no question we need to generate offense from the blue line but I hate the price tag and I hate that he has shortcomings in 2 important areas. 5 on 5 and the PK. We just bought out a high priced center that doesn't play much D. Now we are about to sign a defender who doesn't defend! - dingo8urbaby
It's not like Streit sucks defensively...he has shown in the past, that he can actually play pretty good defense, but his consistency in this area has waned lately...could just be a mental thing, who knows. I think if he get's a strong defensive partner to play with, any defensive shortcoming can be largely mitigated. I'm sure he'll have his "wtf" moments, like any d man, but I'm not expecting a horror show back there. |

He is also a horse who has seen his stats drop at a significant rate over the past 3 seasons, and who can only log big minutes when he has a suitable partner. i dont like that combo at all.
For the record, I made a pitch about him being the Flyers best d-man two seasons ago. I have really soured on the guy. |

Maybe I'm alone on this but here is my feeling on the young group of this team. A little ways back on this board I read that we could afford to keep Matt Read, while also keeping all of our young players intact. I like Matt Read, I do. The problem for me is, I feel there are no game breakers within this group. There is no question in my mind that the most recent clutch players on this team were Danny Briere and Claude Giroux. Now we've lost Briere. If I had to risk Matt Read to find a guy who can break a game wide open, I would. Maybe the Flyers should put a little more focus on the need of Matt Read but the organization feels that somehow they need to get bigger up front. That could very well mean the movement certain young players. In my mind Claude Giroux, Brayden Schenn and Sean Couturier are the future faces of this team. Then I see a little more need for Jake Voracek, Wayne Simmonds, Scott Hartnell and whatever star we pick up to possibly put Giroux over the top at the elite level. I could very well be wrong. This is just how I feel. I like Matt Read but in 2 seasons he has yet to stand out anymore then anyone else on the roster. I think he's right there on par within development with all our other young players. - dingo8urbaby
To me the offensive core of this team has two untouchable players being Giroux and Voracek. By far they are two most dynamic players we have. Please note I am not saying that Couturier or Schenn suck but I just see A level offense abilities from Giroux and Voracek.
Yes if someone offered the obvious big 3 for one of them fair enough but since that is not happening...
Beyond those 2 players and possibly Simmonds plus L. Schenn on D no one else is untouchable for the right player to me. |

Apparently you didn't get the memo: they need Bobby Ryan at all costs, 30 goals a year with getzlaf and perry means 70-80 with Giroux and at least 5 Stanley cups |

I think if the team Doctor recommends a player, not play. That should be the end of it. Even if the player wants to play, they team should step in. |

I agree... problem is, players then begin to lie (not that they dont already) in order to avoid the doc. |

I don't know ... He was a horse for us down the stretch last year playing with grossmann. If used appropriately Coburn is still a very effective defenseman. I'd rather move meszaros's salary at this point. |

Did you have it completely collapse?
The trick for a puncture is (if you have nothing else), get a piece of sandwhich wrap or a sandwhich bag and picture frame tape it over the hole in your chest.
Leave the bottom part un-taped to allow for drainage.

Meszy comes off the book after this season... Cobhorn has 3 more after this season.
My fear is that Coburn continues his slide, and ends up being a 4/5 d-man who needs to be paired with certain people. |
