I'm kind of surprised they're moving heaven and earth to try to re-sign Bickell... if anybody was on a Leino run, it was him. |

It is because the injured player would only get 2/3rds of his salary and not be able to resign with someone to make up the difference.
They should have included a clause that if a player is deem unfit to play the team can buy him out at full salary and the player would remain on the teams insurance for the duration of the buy-out period or until the player resigns with another club. This would solve the problem of the NHLPA not allowing an injured player to be bought out. |

Doesn't solve the problem of the player being out of a job, if his injury is serious enough to affect the player being ready to play next Season. |

Good question. Matt Walker had a crippled hip, and someone traded for him. So anything is possible. |

The player would get his full salary. What does it matter if he doesnt have a job if he is getting the full salary and still on the teams insurance? |

“I hear that all the time from [Flyers Chairman Ed] Snider,” Holmgren said. “He’s always telling me we’ve never drafted a top defenseman. From a depth of our franchise, it’s probably an area we lack, but I’m not going to waver. If we get to the 11th pick in the draft and there’s a forward we really like, that’s who we’re going to draft.”
“I like where we are at,” Holmgren said. I think we’ll get a good player at 11. To get a franchise player you probably have to get up into the top four. I think we have to think down the road at No. 11. You never say never with these young kids, but you have to be prepared to look forward 2-3 years.”
I'm going to get whiplash from loving Homer at the draft, then subsequently hating him after he's dipped into the UFA market. |

Yep, an interesting thought.
Apparently it won't be Leino. He's still hurt. Buffalo saying they won't buy out anyone... Not that he's a huge name... But I found it interesting. - FlyersGrace
I may have imagined this but I could have sworn I read where TB stated that Vinny would not be bought out ...
I dont know about Leino if he were healthy and if he would have been bought out - I dont know if he would have the same "karma" for lack of a better word without Briere
I could be wrong ... happens quite a bit so I am told |

There is a Collective Bargaining Agreement in place. Which means both sides have had to have agreed to it. It's give and take. One of the benefits of being bought out is the ability to become a Free Agent. How is a player going to fully exercise those Free Agent rights, if no one has any interest in signing the player when Free Agency begins, due to an injury? |

Lets not forget that buyouts can happen over 2 seasons. Lieno might not get bought out this season if Buffalo doesnt need the cap room. Maybe at some point he comes back next season, plays well and can be traded to someone else for a playoff push and they will buy him out. That would allow Buffalo to take someone on in the same condition as well. |

Was he injured when the Flyers traded for him? Regardless, that is irrelevant. The point remains that an injury can greatly affect a players worth on the Free Agent market. And affect his ability to maximize his worth in that market. Which is one of the benefits a player gets with a buyout. Hence the rule is in place. |

To tie it back to DFT's post about injuries and buyouts, there's definitely a difference here: trading an injured player isn't terminating their contract prematurely. The traded player will still receive his money, where a bought out player with an injury will likely be unemployed and poop out of luck. |

That is the reason I said a clause would have to be worked out. What does it matter if Pronger can't get resigned if he is being paid his full NHL salary for the length of the rest of his contract, with all the benefits of being on the teams insurance? He can't play anyway, gets his full salary, and medical treatment. Prongers life doesn't change at all. the Flyers are honoring his full contract. |

The rule is a simple rule, and it's easy to understand why it is there.
There are also pension issues and other issues involved. Not to mention that a player on LTIR still counts agains the players share. If he's bought out and paid in full, he would not count against the players share. Which the NHL will have a problem with. Money outside the system. |
