kunitz will be 34 when the season starts, hartnell will be 31
- Crimsoninja

and his new deal starts the following year, when he's 35. 4 years for a power forward is an eternity.

Chris Kunitz is three years older than Hartnell, who was coming off a 37-goal season. The reason Kunitz's deal looks like that is because he's going to be 34 years old at the start of next season. Are you kidding me?

If Chris Kunitz was 30 years old, like Hartnell was, do you honestly think he would've signed the same deal he signed with Pittsburgh today?

NO, he wouldn't have!

- AllInForFlyers

Exactly. Also, with the cap dropping next year, players are having to accept less than they would have under the old CBA (like Shattenkirk).

Just don't be under the impression that hartnell and other flyers are out to do their team any contract favors. The environment in pittsburgh is guys are taking much less to play with their stars.

That's the nuts and bolts

The Flyers have already seen diminishing returns and Hartnell's extension hasn't even kicked in yet.

Btw, Hartnell is now the highest paid Flyers forward.... not a single forward making over $4.75... really weird to see.

Bounce back year for Harts.

i meant in general between the two contracts considering age, previous production, etc

it doesn't seem like a huge hometown discount to me, a little bit of one, but not anything crazy

Big overpayment. One or the other. Not both.
- MJL

good lord no
leddy barely played in the final

- Don'tForgetTocchet

that's an overpayment - Leddy is good, but he hardly played so his value has dropped.
- flyersfan51

The idea was that a player of Leddy's caliber is going to require an overpayment to acquire. It's also not much of an overpayment at all.

Nuts and bolts is that the Kunitz contract isn't a discount. Nor has anyone else taken a "hometown" discount to stay there.

Just ask Jordan Staal, Kris Letang, Fleury, Dupuis, Malkin, etc.

Shattenkirk didn't have to accept less because of a different CBA. He received a huge raise.

Well that's an awful small sample size to judge one player, and even in those 6 games he barely played.

Team that I think would take a chance on Bryz:

Calgary
Minnisota
Chicago
Buffalo
Devils
Islanders
Capitals
Tampa
Florida
Colorado
Edmonton

- youarewrong

Minny signed backstrom no way Bryz is going there and Chicago does not have the cap space

How is it a "huge" overpayment?

Matt Read will be 28 years old soon, and chances are better that that 1st round pick is somewhere between 15-20 then it is 1-15.

Matt Read would probably play one season in Chicago and he priced out of town. Unless that pick is in the top 15, its an UNDERPAYMENT for Nick Leddy.

Everyone wants to talk about acquiring young, puck moving defensemen, but every proposed deal for one is either an over or under payment.

You are obviously "overpaying" for Leddys potential, which he is already starting to show even as a still very young player.

3.8. Look at his numbers over that last 3 years. Discount. 52 pts this year!
