How is it a "huge" overpayment?

Matt Read will be 28 years old soon, and chances are better that that 1st round pick is somewhere between 15-20 then it is 1-15.

Matt Read would probably play one season in Chicago and he priced out of town. Unless that pick is in the top 15, its an UNDERPAYMENT for Nick Leddy.

Everyone wants to talk about acquiring young, puck moving defensemen, but every proposed deal for one is either an over or under payment.

You are obviously "overpaying" for Leddys potential, which he is already starting to show even as a still very young player.

- mochoson

You're assuming a lot there, in that Read would only play one Season there. But that really doesn't matter. It's too much for Leddy. One or the other.

Just don't be under the impression that hartnell and other flyers are out to do their team any contract favors. The environment in pittsburgh is guys are taking much less to play with their stars.

That's the nuts and bolts

Seems more like nutty BS to me. See Jordan Staal and Kris Letang.

3.8. Look at his numbers over that last 3 years. Discount. 52 pts this year!

I think people recognize that his jump in numbers has a lot to do with who he plays with.

but that means we can't insult and disparage our players and mgmt over it

I'm just saying, that's a hell of a nice deal for the pens.

First of all, look at his shooting % this season. It's an unsustainable number.

Secondly, this new contract doesn't kick in until the 2014-2015 season and takes him up to age 38. Not very good value.

I'm sure Kunitz can do an automatic payroll deduction of his check into Sid's back account, so Sid can come up equal with what Malkin is pulling down now.

is an over 35 contract for players who start the contract at age 35 or sign the contract at age 35?

Oh. I wonder how old hartnell will be at the end of his deal? Tremendous value! He could've got a mil more on the market!

Is it? Read would have to have an absolutely disastrous season as good as he is playing with an equally if not more talented forward group in Chicago.

The whole reason Bolland is available is because they can't afford to keep him, and he only carries a 3mill + change cap hit, I'd imagine Read will want pretty close to that even if he has an average season in Chicago over multiple years.

Is it an assumption? Yes. Is it a reasonable assumption? Yes.

I still think Matt Read for Nick Leddy is a deal the Flyers should consider.

Hawks don't really need Read. They have tremendous forward depth. They would probably be looking to trade leddy for picks and amateur talent. Particularly things that don't cost money on the cap.

Read isn't really a player any of the 30 teams can say they "dont need". Great skater, plays both sides of the puck, can play any forward position, isn't afraid to throw or take a hit, PP, PK, plenty of skill, etc

....all for 900k? The way Chicago handles their forward units, I'd say the exact opposite; Read is someone that they probably find very intriguing

I didn't mean it like that. They would certainly take Read. Any team would. I don't think they would trade anything too valuable for him. Its like the way I feel about Ryan. He'd be great to have, but he's more of a luxury. I wouldn't want the Flyers to trade any real valuable assets for him.

The former. That's where the Flyers slipped up on Pronger's contract counting as an over-35 deal.

Did they realize it was an over 35 contract or did they assume it wasn't because he was 34 when he signed it?

I think its a trade they do if they know they can Read signed to at least a 1 year extension.

I see what your getting at though.

The terms "hometown" and "discount" got thrown around a lot in here regarding hartnell. When it's comes to Kunitz extension, it absolutely applies. Deals like this one is why Shero was up for GM of the year, I think he won it

Allegedly, the Flyers believed it wasn't an over-35 contract because of when he signed it but the NHL told them it was.
