Allegedly, the Flyers believed it wasn't an over-35 contract because of when he signed it but the NHL told them it was.

You think that would be something you would check with the NHL before just assuming

It just sucks for Pronger. He should be able to retire gracefully.

Is it? Read would have to have an absolutely disastrous season as good as he is playing with an equally if not more talented forward group in Chicago.

The whole reason Bolland is available is because they can't afford to keep him, and he only carries a 3mill + change cap hit, I'd imagine Read will want pretty close to that even if he has an average season in Chicago over multiple years.

Is it an assumption? Yes. Is it a reasonable assumption? Yes.

I still think Matt Read for Nick Leddy is a deal the Flyers should consider.

Matt Read for Nick Leddy, I can see. Read and 1st round pick is too much. Why would Chicago take a player in a trade they can't afford to keep?

I agree. I think they will just be looking for draft picks if they are going to trade Leddy

Draft picks or players who will be under team control for a while. They need cap relief, but don't have any major needs on their team.

The former. That's where the Flyers slipped up on Pronger's contract counting as an over-35 deal.
- bmeltzer

Actually it's the players age as of June 30th of the Season when the contract starts.

Well that's an awful small sample size to judge one player, and even in those 6 games he barely played.
- mochoson

oh ok then let's trade our 1st for him

We can talk about how risky it is to rely on Steve Mason.

I don't understand why they want to trade Leddy. Is he due for a big payday?

So if a 34 year old player (born on July 1) signed an extension already that kicks in for next season, he will be a 35+?

What if he stops in the Dominican Republic and gets one of those funny birth certificates that changes his age by 3-5 years, making him 30 again.

Bill, are you going to the Draft? If not do you have any draft day rituals?
