a 6/7 defenseman will most likely be put into roles where he has to play 17-20 minutes during lengthy stretches of the season.
- PhillySportsGuy

I disagree. Unless there is significant injuries. He should be playing no where near that amount of ice time.

He shouldn't be playing with Timonen at all. That's the point. When you have all the injuries they have, and have to over play a player like Gervais. That's what happens. Put him in the low minute 6 or 7 spot, and he'll be fine.
And with the Flyers team defense as bad as it was last Season. Much better players such as Coburn looked like crap. Honestly, I don't know what people expect.

- MJL

Even in limited minutes he played worse than most of our AHL defenders last year.

Lauridsen played adequately and Gus played well when pushed into bigger minutes. Gervais struggled with everyone in every situation. Your argument is that he played too much. If he's bad for 17 minutes then he'll be bad for 12 minutes.

Yes, but how many times does a defense unit go an entire season without injuries? never.

I disagree. When you over play a player like Gervais, he get's exposed. He's put in matchups he shouldn't be put in due to having no choice due to injuries.

He averaged over 17 minutes a game in ice time. He should be a 6/7 defenseman who averages about 12 minutes a game.

It's an average over the course of a Season. In order to average 17-20 minutes a game. He'd have to play that amount. Or have some games where he played monster minutes of like 25+ a game, to offset the lower minute games.

No. But they did ask if the job was making Messier's hair grow thin.

If our defense sits as it is right now, stays healthy, and plays at a decent level next year, then we have the kind of defense where we can give everyone an even 20 minutes and be happy with it.

That's the best kind of defense. I'd love to give Kimmo some maintenance days too. Kind of like the Spurs did with Duncan, Ginobili and Parker.

I wouldn't. Tell me what team plays all 6 defenseman 20 minutes a game?

Are we having a discussion or not. I know Gervais is a scapegoat. Because a veteran depth defenseman, who is serviceable at best, had to be played more then he should. On a team with poor team defense, and he looked bad. No kidding!
