Pääjärvi is a relatively big guy (6'3'', 200+lbs) that is just starting to figure out how to better use his size, which is why he stuck around in the NHL this season compared to previous ones. I can see that Holmgren would be interested in his size + that he still has got some nice puck-handling skills. And considering that he wanted to get bigger forwards... This could be a trade with high upside in the long run.

He has regressed though...when he first got here he looked like he could develop into a top 4, two-way guy who could play on the PP and put up 30-40 pts with solid defensive play...since then his offensive game has fizzled out and in his most recent campaign his defensive game took some steps back...he's in his prime now, and should be playing better than ever...why is his development taking a backwards path?

Not so good with Gervais

He can still be a solid top 4 D and play 22-23 minutes a game
He has size and can skate and can retrieve pucks well

He hasn't progressed on offense though

I like him & what I did get to see of him is a small sample size but I feel he'll be more of what we have in a physical hard hitting d-man with limited offensive upside.

Nothing wrong with it just something we always seem to have plenty of right now.

I'm not seeing particular limitations on Nurse's offensive upside. I was very impressed with his 300% gain in production this season over last...12G 29A/41 pts...4 pts in 6 playoff games..and this was playing behind Sproul, who was the featured offensive blueliner. I think he's progressing rapidly and should put up 50+ points as the #1 in Sault Ste. Marie next season.

I like 11 and Coburn for 7 and MPS.

Again, I'm a fan of Braydon Coburn. I like his skillset, and I believe he's a solid, legitimate Top 4 defenseman.

But he's the kind of Top 4 who you can replace: the defensive kind. It doesn't mean he's soft or a liability. It means that if you're looking to replace a Top 4, you can do that easier with Braydon Coburn.

At some point, you have to look at what's coming back. MPS has size, can skate really well. He's still developing, but he's played enough games where you have a feel for what he might be -- he's not quite as advanced as Voracek and Simmonds were, where you had a pretty good idea that both of those guys were capable of it.

But I think the No. 7 pick gives us more options. Braydon Coburn, as I said, is a good soldier. But he had reached his ceiling. We need a little more high-end talent to get us where we all want to go.

my thinking on this is pretty close

if they were consistent in the application of a philosophy, you wouldn't be so fearful. it seems like they get ginned up on a different idea every yr and they run it into a wall regardless of the implications. sometimes it works out and other times they end up spending almost $40 mm for a goalie over 2 yes.

This idea that the Flyers don't have a plan, is simply a myth. Making a trade or signing a Free Agent is how you attempt to make the team better.

A lot has to do with who you pair Coburn with. With Timonen or Grossmann he will play fine, however once they started pairing him with the likes of Gervais and Foster he was in trouble.

Let be fair. I don't think we actually know what Coburn could have been on the Power Play because once the Flyers only begun to add Matt Carle, Chris Pronger and Andrej Meszaros, Brayden Coburn took a back seat to these three. He can play in an offensive role, I just think more or less it was taken away from him. I still feel he can move the puck well as shown when playing with Grossman and I don't think his shot is terrible. Not always on target but still half decent.

At some point, we have to acknowledge the fact that the Flyers, for whatever reason, looked a lot better with Braydon Coburn out of the lineup last season. That's not to say that Coburn is a bad player -- again, his usage last year was absolutely horrific. I've never seen a player have such tough starts in his own zone, at the rate he had them.

And he had Bruno Gervais as his partner, too.

But at the same time...the Flyers won without him in the lineup, for a long enough period of time where you have to be able to tell yourself that you can risk playing without him. That is a recipe to get traded in a cap world. It just is.

There is risk here. Absolutely. But if Valeri Nichuskin's sitting there at 7, then the bank is worth the risk.
