Wasn't the up shall trade done to essentially make cap space for G? - wtfd103074
My basic point is Scottie Upshall has done very little to warrant any value to a team. Why? Basically, the guy can never, ever stay healthy. So they traded him for Carcillo. In the end, Homer was right to jettison for something. Carcillo didn't do much better, but Upshall was/is brittle.
Back to Coburn, I think it is just wise to see what happens to fill the void. Grossmann has to stay healthy no doubt. L. Schenn has shown to be a more consistent shut down d-man then Coburn. So how many defensive d-men do you need in the top 6? L. Schenn, Grossmann, and Coburn play similar roles in my opinion. |

And we need a dynamic scoring option for 2nd line. MPS has size and speed....a little like Jake when we got him...just needs confidence. - TheGreat28
Jake was a dominant offensive player coming up -- in the Q, in Czech U18 and U20 -- the entire way.
MPS, on the other hand, doesn't have that kind of history that would suggest that he's got much untapped offense. He could barely dent the twine in Sweden and in the minors, and he's struggled mightily as an Oiler. Sure, he could just be a late-bloomer... but he could also turn out to be nothing more than a third-liner tease. |

My point was that he was a valuable piece for the Flyers that Holmgren traded because he backed himself into a cap corner. The fact that he subsequently got injured doesnt change that. |

We're just going to disagree on the value of Scottie Upshall. He had one good year in his career (yes with the Flyers, while only playing 61 games).
I don't want to harp on the Upshall, but rather see what happens with other moves if Coburn is dumped to classify it as a mere salary dump. It is going to be an interesting day. |

Fair points. But that is the kind of size/skill that Homer is looking for, and obviously much closer than anyone in the draft outside of top 6 or 7. I always like MP, I'd seriously consider taking a shot if they got at least one second as well.
Again, it really depends on the rest of the plan. |

Agreed. One on each pair. It also allows a second defensive defenseman for pk purposes if say grossmann or schenn are in the box. That way a guy like Timmo isn't killing 1:45 of that penalty. |

Then Darnell Nurse will be the selection after Coburn is traded. |

Ah yes the plan......kinda like the Richards, carter and Bryz plan. I can't wait to see what abortion our idiot GM pulls off today. |

Can't stand him. He's done nothing but weaken this team and its farm system. The next guy will get left holding the bag for years from Homers mismanagement of OUR team. |

1. Do not trade up unless it's into the top-5.
2. Do not move Coburn
3. Draft Pulock
4. Give a double middle finger to the Devils crowd |

Can we even trade Mez right now? He's still officially injured and won't be cleared till mid July at the earliest. So I'd kill the "we should trade Mez" rumors. Unless we can trade him hurt for some reason? |

I personally wouldn't go that far, but I understand your points. I think too many give him a free pass because he made two good trades...the Carter and Richards trades. I would question most of the rest of his moves though. Some smaller ones like Talbot are good, but many more swings and misses. |

A player's health has no bearing on his ability to be traded. Just look at some of the Edmonton/LA deals (the Penner deal for instance) where LA didn't require a physical to finalize the deal.
Edit: It was the Ryan Smyth deal(s):

Good read on the Cobie trade options. I'm not sure getting the 5th is any better than 7th if Nurse is the target. But it does seem odd that we are trading away a top 10 drafted d man in his prime for another top 10 pick d man. What we are really doing is saying Coburn has not lived up to his draft spot...I don't know if that is for certain. And I realize all drafts have different talent levels, but a 7 and an 11 are going to be hard pressed to make the NHL roster. This is clearly a play for the future. By the time these guys see NHL time, G might be past his prime:-) |

Coburn was taken 8th overall in what was arguably the deepest draft ever. Pretty sure he hasn't lived up to the hype.
That said, he's an integral piece to the team, and can step it up in the playoffs. I'd hate to lose him, unless it was a clear-cut win for the Flyers. |
